본 논문에서는 C Ives 이전의 미국음악, C. Ives의 음악적 생애 및 배경, 음악의 특징과 가곡을 소개하고, 그의 실험적 기법이 잘 나타나 있는 6개의 가곡 「The Circus Band」(써커스 밴드), 「The Cage」 (창살), 「General William Booth Enters Into Heaven」(William Booth 장군이 천국에 들어가네), 「The Swimmers」 (수영하는 사람들), 「Majority」(군중), 「Charlie Rutlage」(Charlie Rutlage) 등을 선택하여 분석, 연구하였다. Charles E. Ives (1874-1954) was one of the most representative 20th century composers in America. High value is set on his ability as a pioneer of experimental modern music as well as being an originator of pure American music. Ives' music describes directly American society and people's lifestyle and represents a creative experimental technique. He has led American music style away from mere imitation and copying of European music, and also showed the way which other American composers should have pursued. This thesis introduces American music before Ives, his musical life and background, distinctions of his, music, and his works. Six art songs are selected and analyzed - 『The Circus Banda』, 『The Caged』 , 『General William Booth Enters Into Heaven』 , 『The Swimmers』 , 『Majority』 , 『Charlie Rutlage』 all of which are indications of experimental mind. The following are the general characteristics of these six art songs. American folk rhythm in substance, quotations from hymns and popular melodies, polytonality, atonality, liberal and experimental techniques which do not follow traditional patterns omission of regular bar-lines and key signatures, use of irregular time signatures, innovative techniques - tone clusters, imitations of non-musical sounds, etc, a variety of subject matter-memories of his childhood, a religious and philosolphical words, rough cowboy folk songs, and so an.
