Abstract

This thesis attempts to study Charles T. Griffes' Piano Sonata with the aim of presenting scale, structure, themes, rhythm characteristics and an understanding of the composer's music. Griffes was one of the representative American composers of the 20th century. He created characteristic American music through the influences of German Romanticism and French Impressionism. He firmly understood the piano character itself, with its limitations, because he was educated as a pianist. His piano music reveals the influence and smoothness of Chopin's and Liszt's music for the piano. Piano sonata was composed between 1917 and 1918 . It employs his special scale and a modernistic style in a classical form and is totally removed from impressionistic influences. The most important feature is the above-mentioned "special scale", which is made to combine the traditional D minor scale together with unconnected notes. That is, although the Sonata's key signature is D minor, Its key center is muddled by a special scale which is not a product of major, minor and modal elements. So, it's estimated as an utterance of Neo-classicism alongside 20th century atonality. The structure of the Sonata is in three movement using sonata form and lied form. But, all three movements use the so-called "T-scale" , and the rhythmic pattern in the 1st movement and the themes in the 2nd movement are reused in the 3rd movement. The final chord of the 1st movement links with the first chord and the rhythmic features of the 2nd movement. Also the 2nd movement's coda preshow the beginning of the 3rd movement. So, this sonata has one stream through all three movements. The themes of this work are Scriabinesque in their chord progressions and gregorianchant-like melody, I and Griffes' unique composition techniques are further seen by means of polyrhythm, rhythmic ostinato, triplets and various other rhythmic forms. This sonata should be played after understanding the new "T-scale". In expressing the characteristics of each movement and linking between movements in a natural way, the important aspects of performance of this work may be realized.;본 논문은 필자의 석사 과정 이수를 위한 졸업 연주회의 연주 곡목 중 Charles Tomlinson Griffes (1884-1920)의 피아노 소나타에 대해 연구한 것이다. 특히, 이 연구는 피아노 소나타에 쓰인 새로운 음계 및 조성을 이해하고, 구조, 주제선율, 리듬의 특징을 살펴봄으로써, 연주에 도움을 주고자 한다. Griffes는 20세기초 미국의 대표적인 작곡가로서, 독일 낭만주의 경향, 프랑스의 음악을 지배했던 인상주의를 거쳐, 미국적이고 개성적인 음악을 창조하였다. 그는 피아노 연주가로서 교육을 받았기에 피아노 악기 자체의 특성이나 제한된 성질을 충분히 이해하고 있었으므로, 그의 피아노 작품들은 독특하고 다소 테크닉적인 어려움을 보이면서도 쇼팽이나 리스트의 피아노 음악에 나타나는 유창함과 여유로움을 볼 수 있다. 이 피아노 소나타는 1917-1918년 사이에 작곡된 그의 대표적인 작품으로서, 인상주의 경향으로부터 완전히 벗어나 절대음악의 형식 속에 자신만의 특별한 음계와 현대적인 음악 어법을 사용한 곡이다. 이 곡의 대표적인 특징은 전통적인 D minor 음계에 새로운 음들을 결합시켜 만들어낸 독특한 음계(T-scale)에 의해 곡의 전체가 지배된다는 것이다. 즉, 조표상으로는 D minor 조성을 지닌 곡이지만, 장조, 단조, 선법이 아닌 새로운 음계 (T-scale)에 의해 곡전체의 조성감이 흐려지게 됨으로서, 20세기의 무조음악을 향한 움직임이 엿보이는 신고전주의적인 작품으로 평가된다. 이 곡은 외형상으로, 소나타 형식과 자유로운 가요 형식을 사용한 3 악장 구조의 피아노 소나타이다. 그러나, 3악장 전체가 새로운 음계 (T-scale)를 사용하며, 1악장에 사용되었던 리듬형과 2악장에 사용되었던 주제선율이 3악장에 다시 재현된다. 그러고, 1악장의 마지막 화음이 2악장의 시작 화음으로 연결되어 쓰이고, 2악장 종결구의 리듬적 특징이 3악장의 시작을 예시한다. 이러한 점들을 통해, 3악장 전체가 내용상으로는 하나의 흐름을 가지고 있다고 본다. 이 곡의 주제 선율들은 화음 진행상으로 스크리아빈의 영향을 받은 선율, 그레고리안 성가적인 선율을 비롯하여, 그의 독특한 표현력을 드러내며, 복리듬(polyrhythm)과 동형 리듬(rhythmic ostinato), 3연음부 그외의 특징적인 리듬형으로 다양하게 표현된다. 이 곡의 연주는 무엇보다도 새로운 음계(T-scale)를 이해하고, 그의 색다른 주제 선율들을 표현하는데 있으며, 각 악장의 특징을 파악하여 연주하되, 악장간의 연결이 자연스럽게 이뤄지도록 연주하는 것이 중요하다고 본다.
