Robert Browning의 극적 독백 연구

Abstract

Robert Browning은 극적 독백을 통하여 보편의 정서와 사상으로 환원 될 수 없는 독특한 인물들을 창조해 내었다. 본 논문에서는 Browning의 극적 독백이 보여주는 인물들의 구체성과 특이성에 주목하여 Browning의 극적 독백에서 중요한 것은 어떠한 사상이나 주제가 아니라 시의 언술 행위 자체가 보여주는 것, 언어를 통해 구성되는 구체적인 한 인물이라는 것을 주장한다. 즉 시적 화자가 말하는 시의 주제가 아니라 화자의 주체성에 촛점을 맞춰야 하는 것이다. Ⅱ장에서는 우선 자기 중심적인 세계를 구성하는 화자들의 모습을 살펴본다. 이들은 자신의 의식을 기반으로 스스로의 세계를 구축한다. 유아론적 세계를 구축하는 것은 존재론적 확실성을 확보하기 위한 노력이다. 이때 이들에게서 가장 특징적으로 나타나는 것은 전체성과 무한성을 자신의 세계 내에 끌어들이고자 하는 욕망이다. 그것은 전체 세계의 의미를 자신의 의식에 종속시키려는 의지이다. 주체는 외부 세계의 다양성을 모두 자아라는 통일성 속에 가두어버린다. 그러므로 이 때 주체가 경험하는 전체성과 무한성이란 자아 동일성의 무한한 확장일 뿐이다. Ⅲ장에서는 자기 중심적 세계 구축이 가지는 한계를 검토한다. 실패의 양상은 크게 두 가지로 나뉘어진다. 하나는 주체가 자신의 실패를 인식하지 못하고 계속 자신의 환상 속에 머물러 있는 것이고 다른 하나는 주체가 실패를 인식하기는 하지만 그것을 극복하려는 그 어떤 노력도 하지 않는 것이다. 그 어떤 양상의 실패이든 공통적으로 나타나는 것은 자아의 단조로운 세계에 감금된 주체의 모습이다. 이들은 고정적 자아를 확보하기 위하여 탈시간적 탈공간적 지점에 스스로를 위치시키고자 하지만 그러한 노력이 도리어 그들에게 상징적 죽음을 가져다 준다. 이러한 자기 중심성의 한계를 벗어나기 위해서는 자아 이외의 존재, 실체로서의 타자를 인식하는 것이 필요하다. Ⅳ장에서는 주체의 주관성과 타자의 존재를 양립시키려는 노력을 보여주는 주체의 모습을 통해 자기 중심성 극복의 가능성을 알아본다. 실재로서의 외부 세계를 인식하고 그것이 자신의 세계와 상호작용하도록 할 때 고정된 유아론적 세계는 깨어진다. 유아론적 세계가 깨어지는 바로 그 지점에서 주체는 진정한 주체성을 구축할 계기를 가지게 된다. 진정한 주체성이란 개인의 의식에 기반하면서도 객관적 세계에 대해 유효성을 지니는 주체성을 말하는 것이다. Ⅴ장에서는 진정한 주체성 구현을 가능하도록 만들어주는 타자의 의미에 대해 검토한다. 실재로서의 타자를 인식하고 그의 세계에 동참하는 것은 "공감적 상상력"을 통해 이루어지는 것이다. 각 주체는 동등한 입장에서 상호 작용하면서 서로에게 무한성에 대한 인식을 가져다 준다. 이 무한성에 대한 인식은 주체로 하여금 자신의 한계를 뛰어넘은 영역을 향한 추구를 하도록 하며 그 과정에서 진정한 주체성이 구현된다. 이렇게 구현된 주체성은 고정된 무엇이 아니라 주체가 타자와 맺는 관계에 따라 변화하는 것이다. 즉 진정한 주체성은 시간 속에서 계속적으로 새롭게 만들어지는 것이며 중요한 것은 주체성이 구성되는 '과정' 자체이다. Browning의 극적 독백은 주체성에 대한 기존의 관념을 문제시하고 그것을 재정립하도록 만드는 시형식이다. 시적 담론 내에서 자율적을 존재하는 것은 아무것도 없으며 주체성은 화자와 청자간의 상호 관계에 따라 구성, 재구성되는 것이다.;This thesis is to examine the ways a speaker in Browning's dramatic monologue tries and fails to construct his sense of being. A person tries to control or master the external world by his own way of perceiving and acting. However, "an active, perceiving subject depends for its existence on a relationship with an identifiable object" (Slinn). Likewise, Browning's persona asserts authority over external world through his monologue, his speech act. However, as his monologue assumes the existence of a listener (whether it is a character or a reader), his self-identity also depends on the existence of others. Hence, a persona who constructs a solipsistic world should fail to achieve a real sense of being. For example, by constructing a solipsistic world, the Duke in "'My Last Duchess" and Caliban in "Caliban upon Setebos" gain ontological certainty and experience almost infinite expansion of self-identity. But being enclosed within their self-consciousness, they will eventually experience a symbolic death. For the Bishop in "The Bishop Orders His Tomb" and Andrea del Sarto. life is identical with death in that they fail to achieve the relationship with the outer world and stay within their tomb-like world. Recognizing the existence of other beings is a necessity to get out of a solipsistic world. In Browning's poetry there are some personae who can recognize the other as a real being and communicate with the other through the power of sympathetic imagination. David in "Saul" can have the glimpse of "the Truth (Infinity)" in his effort to deliver Saul out of despair. This perception of infinity makes him overcome his limit as a solipsistic being and discover his true self. The true subjectivity cannot be constructed by one's willed effort but should be manifest. This true subjectivity is not static but made anew depending on the relationship with the other. True subjectivity is something which is continually reformed in the course of time. What is crucial is the 'process' of constructing the subjectivity. Browning's dramatic monologue is a poetic form which urges us to re-define subjectivity. Subjectivity is continually constructed and reconstructed through interaction with other beings.
