Abstract
Two experiments of this research have been performed to verify how the conceptual learning by the analogy are changing in accordance with the working memory capacity. There are two different views on learning new concept by the analogy. One is that the analogy assists the comprehension of the concept and the learning and touches off the inference. The other is that the learning of only concept must be carried because the persistence to this relationship leads the wrong inference. Donnelly and McDaniel(l993) clarified that the learning of concept by the analogy touched off the inference and learning was improved by this. Lee Hyun Joo(1995) who researched among Korean Students of Universities proved that the inference was not induced in linguistic analogical statement, but it was induced when the supporting materials of pictures were provided. She considered this result caused by the fact that these supporting materials such as pictures made working memory load reduced. The individual difference of working memory was largely studied in the linguistic conprehension area. According to the study into the individual difference of working memory in the problem settlement area (I. E. Kotovsky, Hays and Simon 1985), the problem settlement would be improved if the memory load is reduced by the presentation of imitation in big problem settlement. Under the hypothesis of the participation of the working memory capacity in the conceptual learning by the analogy, this research was made into following area. 1) Whether the learning is improved by the analogical explanation of the concept, rather by the simple explanation of the new concept 2) whether the process of learning is changing in accordance with the difference of working memory capacity in the conceptual learning by the analogy. 3) whether the presentation of the stimulas by pictures touches off the conceptual learning by the analogy in the group of small capacity of working memory. Before performing this research, the preliminary experiment was made to check whether the conceptual learning changes in accordance with the working memory capacity. The group of large capacity of working memory performes much better than those of small Capacity in the learning. Experiment 1 was made to survey the exact volume of the problem settlement under the each condition provided with basic questions on the concrete subject of the concept and questions inferred from the relationship, after the two groups divided between large capacity and small capacity of working memory performed their learning of new concept either by literal statement or the analogy. This experiment showed that the group of large capacity of working memory had better results in learning of concept by the analogy than those of small capacity, that is, the group of large capacity solved better the problems of the inference. In experiment 2, among the group of small capacity of working memory who showed no effect of the conceptual learning by the analogy, the following conditions were prepared to reduce the working memory load 1) the presentation of pictures with analogical statement 2) the presentation of pictures with literal statement. This experiment showed the group of small capacity of working memory improved the result of the conceptual learning by the analogy, when the supporting picture were used. But the group who learned with literal statement only describing concept did not showed much effectiveness by supporting materials of pictures. Putting various results of experiment 1 and 2 together, working memory have effect on learning the new concept by analogy, and the people of the large capacity of working memory can handle the load of settlement reguired by the analogy, but the small capacity group can analogize when provided with stimulas by such as pictures. In view of the results of two experiments, the large capacity of working memory considers to be related to the learning of the new concept by the analogy, and among the small capacity group, visuo-spatial scratchpad considers to be related to make a match, I. E., mapping among concepts.
