The present study investigate the effect of analogies in learning and comprehending scientific concepts. By analogy the individual can infer and comprehend an novel domain through a familiar domain. The analogy was studied actively in problem-solving. Some of the studies showed that analogies could also be effective in educational setting. Contrary to these assertion, several researchers claimed that analogy may lead students to draw incorrect inference by applying the source domain where it does not belong to. To resolve this kinds of dispute, Donnelly and McDaniel (1993) conducted several experiments and demonstrated that the use of analogy fostered inferences about the target domain and facilitated conceptual learning, and that different types of presentation of the learning materials interacted different kinds of test questions. The present study tried to find out if the use of analogy as the tool of explanation would help Korean students learn scientific concepts. 12 selected concepts from astrophysics and biology were used to investigate the comparative effects of analogy to effect of literal statements. Three conditions (analogy condition, literal condition, and control condition) were constructed. Subjects in analogy condition were given a mapped concepts with source analogs and subjects in literal condition were given literal statement of the concepts to be studied. Subjects in the control condition were presented same number of statements, but there was no scientific information concerning the concepts. Analogical effect was measured by the correct response of each type of questions. The result of experiment 1 was that subjects in the analogy and literal condition performed better than subjects in control condition. The effect of study through analogy, however, was worse than that of literal presentation. In addition, there was no significant difference between the performance of the analogy group and literal group in answering inference questions. The poor performance of the analogy group resulted from the unfamiliar way of explaining and burden of working memory in connecting source analog and new concepts. Experiment 2 presented the pictures of the concepts with the statement to reduce the load of the working memory and to establish the representation firmly. While Donnelly and McDaniel had no additional effect of analogy by presenting dynamic-visual adjucnts, in this experiment adding pictures resulted in improvement of overall performance in analogy and picture group. It was notable that the performance of the analogy and picture group were better than that of the literal and picture group in answering the inference questions. For analogy and picture group, it was easier to accessing source analogy by presenting pictures. These results of the present study suggest that analogy have to be supported by visual adjuncts to be more effective.-
