Abstract
This study develops a reflection on the spirituality in today's mission communities mainly around the monastic movements throughout the Christian history. This attempt has given an insight in the aspect of spirituality through Middle Age's monastic communities formed as a resistance against the secularization of the church. So the purpose of this study is to present a model for missionary strategy that will bring the monastic impluse into light again under the actual circumstances of unfavourable side effects of modern churches' missions, secularization or missionary unbalance. That is, thinking the communal life itself as an 'evidence' of the Gospel has a missionary meaning that based on this thinking a mission model is to be presented. The author of this study tries to explore a mission community model in which living and mission can go together, action and Words can be harmonized and furthermore Korean reality fully considered. Under this purpose, concept of mission has been definded and examples of mission community investigated throughout the Bible. As a result, characteristics of mission communities have been revealed. An example which had these characteristics throughout the Christian history is the monastic community. Therefore, in this study the Franciscan Order as a representative type that reveals such characteristics and its four representative divine features are investigated. The latter four is obedience, honest poverty, simplicity and celibacy. The author could recognize again that these divine features are an invaluable heritage having contributed to prove the evangelical living to the church and mission. Even today, there are some monastic types which carry desirable mission works such as Taize Community, the Evangelical Sisterhood of Mary in the West,Indian Ashrams and Jesus abbey in Korea. And through an investigation of these communities, the actual conditions, contributions and problems of mission activities are reviewed. The author thinks that historical communities like the Franciscans which made a harmony between actions and Words to show a living in Gospel, thus attain a missionary meaning and community itself becomes a strategy for mission work have yielded the background and basis of today's communities. Evidently the theological foundation of the motivation of mission work, mode of life and evidence as a life is the words of Jesus. The author believes that reviewing the positive aspects of the past mission communities can bring correct recognition and clear cut understanding about the present and also help to prospect desirable mission activities for the future. So this study attempts to explore a substitute model or supplementary model as a methodological self-supporting mission community model by focusing not on the existing mission practices from the systematic, functional diagrams but on the Christian environments through the missionary life and mission community. Korean churches' mission works for the oncoming 21th C. are confronting an age of rapidly changing paradigm. To cope with this, many effective mission strategies have been examined but more substantial studies related to the essential aspects of mission, i.e., concept of mission itself and quality of the missionary are demanded. And the author of this study think the monastic mission model investigated above can give a great help. But for one mission model to be a self-supporting, cooperating model for Korean church, investigations of the general social background such as our country's religion and culture and studies and researches to make concrete propositions for independent activities are required. Because our missionary background is quite different from that of the West and there really are exclusive conditions peculiar to Korean religion, society and culture together with the changing paradigm that proper missionary strategies are necessary. In this study, however, essential aspects of mission work focused on the missionary himself and mission environments have been primarily discussed since the author though that they are important in the present state of Korean churches which incline to be fortune invoking, secular, material, gigantic and systematic. Korean churches must reconsider their egocentric mission patterns resulting from excessive competitions and heat due to the large-sized and individualized activities. If we use such excessive heat in the mutual challenge, renovation and cooperation for establishing a self-supporting mission model, various new cooperating communities can be explored and a turning point for contributing to the Korean mission works can be made. Of course, this study has a certain limitation that requires further theological studies including correct mission spirituality, material view and reliable information about mission not to speak of having proper mission strategies in accordance with the particular conditions peculiar to Korean religion, society and culture as pointed above.
