Benjamin Britten의 연가곡 "A Charm of Lullabies" Op. 41 (자장가의 마법)에 대한 연구

Abstract

Benjamin Britten(l913~1976) was a composer who developed 20th century British modern music by outstanding works of various genres during the period of musical stagnation in England after Purcell(1659-1695). He was not only a composer, but also a prominent conductor worked vigorously through the early and middle period of 20th century, who especially was interested in vocal music and left 80 vocal pieces among all this 110 pieces. What important in Britten's vocal music are song cycle and opera. He was interested in composition of British music and folk music since Elizabethan period rather than the one of modem music, and compromised between traditional music and modern music. Particularly it was his conservativeness that made him to compose tonal music in spite of the contemporary currency of atonal music. He, who was attracted by British Baroque music, especially Purcell's, arrange purcell's works, developed speech style for representation, and investigated the relationship between poem and music to express the beauties of English poems extremely in his music. This thesis will analyze <A Charm of Lullabies> among 13 Britten's song cycles to study the character of his vocal music. Unlikely other song cycles, this cycle is composed with 5 poems of different poets. Although has no thematic relationship, it has musical coherence according to his original composition. If appears in common constructional ways of folk songs, especially in repetition of basic tune and use of dotted rhythm which reminds Scottish dance music. The charm of Britten's songs in popular and simple vocal tune which emphasizes effectively the contents of rhythm by the contrast of rhythm, the variation of rapidity and the contrast of dynamics. The harmony is constructed with chords and leaping of perfect 5th and perfect 4th, and the piano part chooses pedal point, which is juxtaposed with vocal part. The chief character of Britten's vocal music, appeared in the analyse of <A Charm of Lullabies>, is the compromising between the folk music and sophisticated modem sense. He made song cycle of 5 poems without unified theme from this original composition.;Benjamin Britten(1913-1976)은 Henry Purcell(1659-1695) 이후 음악문화의 침체 상태가 계속되었던 영국 음악을 부흥시킨 작곡가이다. 20세기 현대에 활동하였고 작곡가 뿐 아니라 지휘자, 피아니스트로서도 그 명성을 떨쳤으며, 특히 80여개나 되는 성악작품들로 20세기 영국 성악 음악을 완성시킨 작곡가이기도 하다. 성악 작품들에서 Britten은 현대 적 인 작곡 기법에 치우치기 보다는 Elizabeth 왕조이래 영국 음악과 영국 민요의 전통 위에 현대적 음악감각을 더하였고, 대부분 조성적인 선율을 사용하여 보수적인 면을 나타낸다. 또한 그의 음악은 Purcell적인 면모를 보이는데, 고조된 가사를 표현하기 위해 심한 도약 선율을 사용하는 방법과 도입부에서 약박임에도 불구하고 f_ 의 악상을 제시함으로써 첫선율을 강하게 하는 방법 등은 Purcell 의 Speech Style을 사용한 것이다. 영국시가 갖는 아름다움을 최대한 그의 음악에 표현하고자 시와 음악과의 관계를 중요시 한 것 역시 Purcell 적인 면모라 하겠다. 본 논문에서는 Britten 성악작품의 특징을 보다 쉽게 이해하여 연주하는데 도움이 되고자 그의 13개의 연가곡중 <A Charm of Lullabies>[자장가의 마법] Op.41을 분석하여 이 작품에 나타난 그의 성악 음악의 특징을 다루고자 한다. 이 연가곡은 다른 그의 연가곡들과는 달리 각기 다른 5명의 시인의 시에 음악이 붙여진 것으로, 시의 주제적 통일감은 없지만 그의 독창적인 작곡기법으로 음악의 일관성을 보이는 작품이다. 이 연가곡에서 Britten은 민요의 일반적인 구성 방법을 사용하였는데, 기본 선율이 반복되는 것이 그것이며 Britten 음악의 독특한 매력이라 할수 있는 쉽고 세련된 성악 선율을 사용하였다. 리듬은 시의 내용에 따라 대조를 이루기도하며 스코틀랜드의 춤곡을 연상케하는 붓점 리듬이 사용되었다. 피아노부는 성악성부와 병진행이 나타나며 Pedal Point를 사용하여 Purcell 적인 특징을 보이고 빠르기와 Dynamics의 대조등으로 가사의 내용을 효과적으로 표현 하였다. 이와 같이 <A Charm of Lullabies>[자장가의 마법] Op.41 의 분석을 통하여 나타난 Britten 성악음악의 특징은 민요의 특징에 세련된 현대적 감각을 더한것인데, 이러한 독창적인 작곡기법으로 그는 시적으로 통일된 주제가 없는 5개의 시를 하나의 훌륭한 연가곡으로 만들어 내었다.
