Abstract
The current study examined the effects of attachment-security priming on empathy and helping responses. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether empathy and altruistic behaviors vary with personal working models and also whether increases in attachment security foster empathy and helping responses, regardless of variations in dispositional attachment security orientation with personal working models. Participants were 299 students attending 5 schools located in Seoul and Kyoung-Ki Province. They completed Inventory of Parent and Peer Attachment, Relationship Questionnaire, Empathy Scale, Altruistic Behavior Scale and Priming Task. The data were analyzed with Pearson's correlation, MANOVA and Scheff? analysis by the SPSS/PC+ Version 12.0. The Results of the study are as follows: 1. The significant differences among personal working models were found in rated empathy and altruistic behaviors. Especially, it was found the level of empathy and altruistic behaviors depended most upon which model of others, positive or negative, a person had. That was people with positive working model of others revealed higher level of empathy and altruistic behaviors than people with negative working model of others. 2. The significant main effects for priming conditions on empathic responses were revealed. Specifically, the empathic responses in attachment-security priming condition were significantly higher than that in control condition. Also, for helping responses, the two-way interaction of priming conditions and personal working models were significant. That was people with working model of negative self-positive others and people with working model of positive self-negative others showed higher level of helping responses in attachment-security priming condition. Overall, the current study demonstrates that personal working models affect their empathy and altruistic behaviors, and priming with attachment security leads higher levels of empathic and helping responses, regardless of variations in dispositional attachment security orientation with personal working model. Based on this study, it suggests that attachment security would provide a foundation for care-oriented feelings and caregiving behaviors.
