Dominick Argento의 <Six Elizabethan Songs>를 중심으로 한 가곡의 연구

Abstract

Dominick Argento(1927- )는 20세기 미국 성악 작품의 대표적인 작곡가이다. 그의 작품에는 많은 부수음악과 12개의 opera, 그리고 합창곡이 있으며, 1954년 이후 현재까지 7개의 연가곡을 통해 52곡의 가곡을 발표했다. 그의 가곡은 Shakespeare같은 문호들의 시와 Virginia Woolf의 일기, 그리고 그외에 서간문, 탐험기를 가사로 채택하여 전통적 형식에 현대적 기법을 가미한 음악과 훌륭하게 조화시킴으로써 미국 현대 가곡의 특성을 잘 드러내 주고 있다. 본 논문은 Argento의 두번째 가곡인 Six Elizabethan Songs(엘리자베스 시대의 6개의 노래)의 시의 내용과 형식 및 조성, 선율, 반주형태 등의 분석과 연주적 고찰을 하였고 그의 가곡 전반에 대하여 연구해 보았다. Argento의 Six Elizabethan Songs는 Elizabeth시대의 문호들의 작품을 발췌하여 자연과 인간 내면의 심상을 표현하고자 한 것으로, 각 곡은 시의 내용에 따라 다양한 음악적 구성을 보여주고 있다. 이 곡들은 구조의 간결함과 통일성이 특징이며 가사가 갖는 깊은 의미와 억양이 성악선율 그리고 전체의 리듬적, 화성적, 구조적인 음악적 요소들과 완벽하게 조화되어 있음을 알 수 있다.;Dominick Argento(l927- ) is a famous 20th century American composer of vocal music, who has composed incidental musics, 12 operas, choral pieces, and has written 7 song cycles since 1954. His art songs takes its texts from writings like poems of various writers including Shakespeare, diary of Virginia Woolf, various letters, notes from expeditions and sets them with music that blends traditional form with modern methods, which, incidentally, reflect the characteristics of modern American art songs. This paper is a study of his art songs in general, concentrating on his second song cycle 'Six Elizabethan Songs' by analyzing the texts, tonality, melody, forms of accompaniment, and actual stage performance considerations. Argento's Six Elizabethan Songs uses the works of writers of Elizabeth era to manifest the nature and image of human mind, putting different musical constructions in accordance with the poems. The work is characterized by structual simplicity and unity, while inner meaning and intonation of the text is in perfect agreement with the vocal melody and overall rhythmic, harmonic, structual components.
