온라인 공간에서의 상호작용과 규범

Abstract

This study points out importance of voluntary contribution and cooperation in cyber communities that pursue different kind of goal, and deals with different participant’s interaction and norms about reward and control between communities. The range of cyber communities has wide distribution in size and goals. In addition, communities pursue not only instrumental information but emotional satisfaction between participants. Moreover, cyber communities have troubles in applying norms to participants than offline communities do. Therefore, It is very critical that communities induce voluntary contributions and cooperation for communities′ maintenance. This Characteristic of cyber communities is related with dilemma of common goods, that is, how communities prevent free-riding and derive norms. And that norms derived by cooperation and interactions between participants inform participants what they should do. Focusing these characteristics of cyber communities, this study classify goal of communities with instrumental information and emotional satisfaction, and investigate different kinds of interactions between communities which pursue different goals. And different forms of interaction develop distinct norms about reward and control. Thus questions are following: "How different is relational structure of interaction between communities?" "How different is institutional structures of interaction between communities?" "How do communities derive and apply norm about reward and control in which have different kinds of interaction structure?" For investigating these questions, I chose two communities which belong to Nikon Forum in SLRCLUB(www.slrclub.com). They have each goal, which is sharing information and promoting friendship among the members. I collected contents of writings and replies on board for 4 days; accordingly 2540 writings are analyzed according to the same categories. The results of the study reveal the each side of interaction and norms. First, Nikon Social Group has small numbers of the members, and they participate more constantly than the members of Nikon Instrumental Forum do. This makes visibility among the members high, so makes the members feel more intimate one another. Although most participants communicate unspecific members on board, high visibility and intimacy among members allows the members to communicate individually and to develop various forms of emotional expressions. Therefore, the members of Nikon Instrumental Forum respond more objectively than Nikon Social Group′s members do. Second, High visibility and building of individual relationship in Nikon Social Group develop individual knowledge and intimacy, by extension, are related to control and approval. Hence, they re very significant foundations for building up informal and voluntary norms. Furthermore, considerable numbers of Nikon Social Group′s members interact one another in real world as well as on board. It means that this community has interaction structure which makes the members connect more close. So the members actively offer their resources one another and participate in common interest than participants of Nikon Instrumental Forum do. Third, the members of Nikon Instrumental Forum pursue objective information and are connected sparsely, so they develop plain gratitude as a reward. And a member′s position is limited to their instrumental knowledge, consequently there is not a member who has more authority over the others, so that official norms widely apply the members. In contrast, the members of Nikon Social Group develop praise and respect about personality as a reward, and it is closely related with a member′s position and reputation. That is, reputation and position are not only related to possess scarce information but also to gain the confidence. So, confidential members have more authority over the others, and they affect derivation of voluntary regulations and norms. In short, this study investigates cyber communities which have different goal develop distinct interaction structures, and reveals the distinct interaction structures derive different forms of reward and control. The existing researches deal with cyber communities that pursue highly professional and technical knowledge and have very minor contributors and most onlookers. On the other hand, this study points out there is wide range of goals in general communities, so interactions among the members have more diverse aspects. And those interactions develop different kinds of rewards and controls which are results by cooperation for accomplishing communities′ goals.;본 논문은 서로 다른 유형의 정보 및 자원을 추구하는 온라인 커뮤니티에서 공통적으로 구성원들의 자발적인 참여와 협력을 이끌어낼 필요가 있음을 지적하고, 이것이 이루어지는 구체적인 상호작용의 구조 및 내용과 구성원들의 상호작용 안에서 생성되고 적용되는 보상과 통제에 대한 규범이 각 커뮤니티에서 어떠한 차이를 보이고 있는지 다루고 있다. 온라인 커뮤니티의 범위는 구성원의 수나 설립의 목적 등에서 매우 다양한 분포를 보이고 있으며, 보다 일반적인 온라인 커뮤니티에서 추구되는 목적은 도구적 정보만이 아니라 구성원 간의 친밀함과 연대 등의 정서적 만족 또한 포함된다. 또한 온라인에 위치한 커뮤니티는 오프라인에서의 공동체에 비해 구성원에게 즉각적으로 적용되는 보상이나 제재의 규범을 적용하기가 어려우며, 따라서 커뮤니티의 유지 및 활성화를 위해 구성원들의 자발적인 참여와 협조에 기대는 부분이 매우 크다. 이와 같은 온라인 커뮤니티의 특성은 온라인 커뮤니티 내 공통의 목표 추구에도 공공재의 딜레마, 즉 어떻게 무임승차를 막고 구성원들의 참여를 유도할만한 규범을 발전시킬 수 있을 것인가의 문제를 적용할 수 있음을 의미한다. 그리고 구성원의 자발적 참여를 끌어내기 위한 규범적 측면은 그 자체가 상호작용 맥락에서 행위의 제한 및 가능을 가늠하는 기준이 된다는 점에서, 구성원이 상호작용에서 이용하는 또 다른 협업의 산물이 될 수 있는 것이다. 이에 주목하여, 본 연구에서는 온라인 커뮤니티에서 추구되는 목적을 크게 도구적 정보와 정서적 만족의 두 차원으로 나누고, 상이한 목표의 추구에 따라 커뮤니티 내에서 서로 다른 상호작용 구조와 내용을 발전시키고 있음을 보인다. 그리고 이와 같이 각기 다른 상호작용의 구조와 내용은 서로 상이한 보상과 통제의 규범과 연결된다. 따라서 연구문제는 다음과 같이 요약된다. 첫째, 상이한 목표를 추구하는 커뮤니티에서 구성원들의 참여가 이루어지는 상호작용의 관계적 구조는 어떻게 나타나는가? 둘째, 서로 다른 목표를 추구하는 커뮤니티에서 상호작용의 내용은 어떠한 차이를 보이는가? 셋째, 서로 다른 상호작용의 구조와 내용을 가진 커뮤니티에서 보상과 통제의 규범은 어떠한 식으로 발전되고 적용되는가? 이를 다루기 위해 선택한 연구대상은 SLR카메라 정보공유 사이트 내의 두 커뮤니티로서, 이는 각각 같은 메이커의 기기에 대한 정보 추구 및 공유라는 목적과 구성원 간 친목 도모라는 목적을 추구하고 있다. 이 두 커뮤니티에서 총 4일간의 글을 전수 조사하여, 기기포럼의 1716개 글과 친목게시판의 824개 글을 동일한 범주를 적용시켜 내용분석 하였다. 연구의 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 상대적으로 다수의 행위자들이 낮은 빈도로 참여하는 기기포럼과는 달리 친목게시판에서는 소수의 행위자들이 높은 정도의 참여를 보이고 있음을 알 수 있다. 이는 구성원들 간 가시성을 높이면서, 서로를 보다 더 친숙하게 느끼도록 작용한다. 이는 개인이 커뮤니티 구성원 다수에 대해 발언하고 반응을 받는 일반적인 온라인 커뮤니티 내 관계 구조 외에도 구성원 간 개별적인 관계 맺음을 가능케 한다. 이는 구성원들이 게시물에 한정된 반응을 넘어 다양한 방식의 정서적 표현을 보이는 것을 가능케 한다. 그러므로 기기포럼의 구성원들이 보다 객관적인 동의의 방식이나 관련 경험의 서술, 의견의 표출로서 서로 소통하는 반면, 친목게시판에서는 보다 정서적인 몰입과 표현을 보이고 있음을 볼 수 있다. 그러나 기기포럼 내에서도 공통의 관심인 기기 및 사진을 소재로 한 구성원 간 감정의 표현 및 교류가 활발히 이루어지고 있음을 발견할 수 있다. 다만 이와 같은 표현이 도구적 정보의 추구라는 전체의 맥락을 끊지 않을만한 영역에서 한정적으로 이루어지고 있는 것이며, 이는 기존 연구에서 주로 다루어진 고도로 전문화된 지식을 추구하는 온라인 커뮤니티에서와는 달리 보다 일반적인 수준의 관심을 공유하는 커뮤니티에서는 도구적 정보뿐만 아니라 구성원 간 친밀함과 정서적 교감이 커뮤니티의 활성화와 목표 추구에 중요한 역할을 함을 드러낸다. 둘째, 구성원 간 가시성이 높은 친목게시판에서의 구성원 간 높은 가시성과 개별적 맥락 형성은 서로에 대한 지식 및 친밀함을 더욱 발전시키며, 나아가 서로의 행동에 대한 높은 규제 및 허용 정도와 관계되어 있다. 따라서 이는 비공식적인 자체 규범의 형성에 매우 중요한 기반이 될 수 있는 것이다. 또한 오프라인과의 연계 구조가 발전되어 있는 친목게시판의 경우, 기기포럼에 비해 구성원 간 긴밀한 관계 맺기를 가능케 하는 상호작용의 양식을 가지고 있는 것으로 볼 수 있으며, 이는 보다 적극적인 수준에서의 도움 제공 및 커뮤니티의 공통적인 행사 및 목표를 추구하는 모습으로도 이어진다. 셋째, 객관적 지식 추구를 목적으로 한 구성원들이 상대적으로 약하게 연결되어 있으며 간접적인 방식의 상호작용을 하고 있는 기기포럼의 경우, 정보의 기여에 대해서 단순한 수준의 감사 표현이 가장 일반적인 상징적 보상 형태로 발견된다. 또한 이와 같은 상호작용 구조 내에서 개인의 지위 또한 그가 제공하는 정보에 한정되어 있기 때문에, 명백히 권한이 더 높은 행위자가 발견되지 않으며 통제는 개인의 신망 및 연결에 의해서라기보다는 공식적인 규범에 의해 이루어진다. 반면 보다 긴밀하고 개인적인 차원에서의 상호작용을 보이는 친목게시판에서는 구성원의 개인적인 성격 및 특성에 대한 칭찬 및 존경이 표해지고 있으며, 이는 커뮤니티 내 평판 및 지위의 형성과 밀접히 연결되어 있다. 따라서 평판 및 지위는 단지 희소한 도구적 자원의 보유뿐만 아니라, 개인적 특성에 대한 구성원의 신망 및 친밀함 표현으로도 발전될 수 있음을 알 수 있다. 그리고 이와 같이 형성된 지위는 보다 커뮤니티 전반에 대해 영향력이 큰 행위자를 발전시키며, 이들은 커뮤니티 내 자체 규제 및 규범의 장려에도 영향을 미치고 있음을 볼 수 있다. 이와 같이 본 연구에서는 서로 다른 목표를 추구하는 온라인 커뮤니티가 상이한 상호작용의 관계구조와 상호작용의 내용을 발전시키면서, 그 맥락 안에서 각기 다른 보상과 통제에 관한 규범을 형성하고 적용시킨다는 점에 주목하고 있다. 기존의 연구들이 주로 고도의 전문적인 지식을 추구하는 온라인 커뮤니티를 대상으로 하여 매우 명백한 기여자의 유형을 드러내고, 이들에게 주어지는 보상 또한 희소한 지식에 대해 주어지는 평판에 있음을 주장한 반면, 본 연구는 보다 일반적인 수준의 커뮤니티에서 추구되는 목적은 다양한 범위에 존재함을 주목하고, 따라서 상호작용의 구조와 내용 또한 훨씬 더 복잡한 양상을 보일 수 있음을 지적한다. 그리고 이와 같은 상호작용의 구조와 방식이 상이한 보상과 통제의 규범을 발전시키면서, 이 자체가 커뮤니티의 목표를 달성하고 유지하기 위한 또 다른 협업의 산물임을 보이고 있다.
