School violence, emerging as one of the most serious social problems in Korea, has increased in such a way to become more violent, common and increasingly characterized by younger participants and females. Usually male students have been main culprits of school violence, increasingly the number of female students involved in school violence is on the rise. Therefore, efforts to fight against this new form of violence are urgently needed. I aim to analyze three factors and their relationship to school violence: the parent-child relationship(rearing practices and communication), violent tendencies, and exposure to school violence. Existing studies have shown that, males and females participate in school violence for different reasons, and I seek to explore how the previously mentioned three factors impact genders differently. The final goal of this study is to develop appropriate and gender specific countermeasures to these increases in violence. To accomplish this goal, I analyzed parent-child relationship, violent characteristics and exposure to violence of study subjects and how they exhibit different characteristics based on gender. In addition, I explore how these three factors interrelate. From April 11-20 2006 I surveyed 832 students in 35 classes over 18 middle and high schools around Seoul, in 4 different regions (Kangdong, Kangnam, Kangseo, Kangbuk). Excluding incomplete or inconsistent results, I analyzed 569 surveys using SPSS/WIN 12.0, erformed the following analyses: descriptive analysis, frequency analysis, cross referencing, t-analysis, Pearson relations analysis and two-way analysis of variance. Main findings: First, parent-student relationships, students experienced rearing practices and communication from mothers more than fathers. Both parents illustrated similar levels of communication with their children. Students most commonly exhibit violent tendencies in the form of physical threats, followed by threatening violence, verbal assault and finally anger. Most students had no experience of school violence. Among students who did experience violence, it is mostly in the form of threat, followed by physical violence, extortion, ostracization, cyber-violence and sexual harassment. Excluding sexual harassment about 15% of students surveyed have experienced school violence. Second, female students have more positive relationships with their parents. In terms of violent tendencies, male students show higher levels for all factors except for anger, where female students exhibit more anger. The differences between males and females are larger in forms of direct expression of violence than in indirect expressions of violence. In summary, in this second factor, violent tendencies differ greatly based on the student's gender. In every form of school violence except ostracization and sexual harassment, males experience more violence than females. School violence is more common amongst males. Males are usually the instigators of violence and females are usually the target of violence. Third, male students show higher tendencies of violence related to their parental relationships, while females have a higher level of factors that are not related to the parental relationship. As a result this shows that males' violent tendencies are more closely related to their parental relationship. For male students if the parental relationship is based on positive communication and liberal upbringing, they have fewer violent tendencies. Therefore, female students who have stronger parental relationships experience more violence, and are more likely to instigate violence. Fourth, both male and female students who have scored high tendencies towards physical threats and anger are more likely to instigate school violence. As a result, physical threats and anger are the primary factors of school violence regardless of gender. In summary, this study revealed male students experience more negative parental relationships, higher propensity to be violent, and they are usually the instigator rather than the victim. Male students experience school violence more when they experience negative upbringing and negative and controlling communication with their parents. Females have the inverse relationship with their parents, when they have stronger parental relationships they are more prone to violent behavior. Also, when someone had higher violent tendencies in the form of physical threats, threatening violence, verbal assault and finally anger. I believe this can be an important basic document to develop countermeasures to school violence since this study concludes thatmale students need additional positive parenting, and female students need to control their tendencies to become violent.-
