성의 자율성과 순결이데올로기

Abstract

본 연구는 미혼 여성들의 경험을 통하여 순결이데올로기에 대하여 이들이 어떻게, 왜 수용하고 거부하는가를 보면서 순결이데올로기의 극복방안을 찾고 또한 그 극복방안과 성에 있어서의 자율성을 연관지어 논의하려고 한다. 연구 대상을 연애의 경험이 있거나 지금 연애를 하고 있는 미혼인 여대생으로 설정하였는데, 순결이데올로기에 대한 구체적인 고민은 연애관계 속에서 경험하는 성관계에 대한 요구를 계기로 발생하였다. 또한 이들의 자의적인 결정을 보기 위하여 강제되거나 강요된 성적 행위는 분석에서 배제하였다. 심층면접의 방법으로 이들이 일상적 생활로 받아들이는 연애의 과정을 파악하였고, 면적은 93년 7월에서 94년 2월에 걸쳐 이루어졌으며 11명의 사례 가운데 8명을 선정하였다. 성관계 요구 이전과 이후의 경험들 속에서 이들의 성에 대한 인식과 태도의 변화, 순결이데올로기를 둘러싼 갈등, 순결이데올로기에 대한 순응과 거부의 결과로서 성관계에 대한 태도의 결정을 보았는데 그 결과는 다음과 같다. 이들 여대생들은 성관계에 대한 요구가 있기 전까지는 여러 과정을 거치면서 성적 행위와 연애의 연관성을 자연스럽게 받아들인다. 성에 대한 긍정은 연속적인 경험들 속에서 지속되다가 성관계 요구에 직면하면서 이들을 혼란스럽게 하는 요인이 된다. 혼전의 성관계를 금지하는 순결이데올로기와 성과 연애의 연관성에 대한 긍정적인 태도가 맞부딪히는 것이다. 순결이데올로기에 대해 평가하고 자신의 상황을 해석하는 과정에서 이들의 태도는 다르게 나타나기 시작한다. 순결이데올로기로부터 벗어나는 것에 대한 두려움과 순결이데올로기의 부당성을 비판하는 태도는 이들 사례들 모두에서 공유되고 있지만, 순결이데올로기를 재생산하는 가부장적 결혼에 대한 태도에 있어서 차이를 보이는 것이다. 순결이데올로기와 가부장적 사회구조의 완강함을 수긍하고 자신의 성적 태도를 그 규범에 맞추는 태도와, 그것의 완강함을 알면서도 비판적인 인식을 포기하지 않는 태도로 나뉘어진다. 이러한 태도의 차이는 가부장적 결혼과 자신의 삶을 어떻게 설정하는가에 의해 발생한다. 여성들은 자신의 결혼이 어머니의 결혼과는 다르기를 원하며 자기 일에 대한 기대를 가지고 있다. 그런데 가부장적 구조에 순응하는 이들은 그렇지 않은 이들보다 자신의 일에 대한 의지나 준비 면에서 상대적으로 미약하므로 가부장적 결혼을 통하여 상대에게 자기 삶을 위탁하려고 한다. 이들은 자신의 성을 결혼의 테두리 안으로 한정하는 방식을 선택한다. 순결이데올로기를 거부하는 이들을 순결을 강요하는 가부장적 결혼을 거부하며, 결혼을 전제하지 않고서도 성관계를 할 수 있다고 여긴다. 순결이데올로기에 대한 대응은 자신의 삶을 어떻게 살 것인가 라는 삶에 대한 태도에 따라 결정되고 있는 것이다. 그러므로 가부장적 사회 속에서 자율적인 삶을 영위하고자 하는 이들은 지금 경제적으로 독립해 있거나 자기 일을 가지고 있지 않는다 하더라도 자신의 진로를 위한 준비를 통하여 자율적인 태도를 길러가고 있다. 이들이 순결이데올로기를 거부할 수 있는 것은 성적으로 여성을 억압하는 기존의 규범과 질서에 대해 비판하고 대안을 모색하는 가운데 인간관계를 중심으로 성적 행위에 대한 태도를 결정하려는 자세에서 비롯된다고 하겠다.;The aim of this thesis is to find the way how to overcome the virginal chastity Ideology and to relate that way with sexual autonomy through women's dating experiences. Women in their twenties accept or refuse the virginal chastity Ideology in their reasons. This thesis focuses on how and why they react to that Ideology. The subjects of the study are female collegians who are(were) in love with someone. They conflict on that Ideology concretely when they meet their own sexual desire or partner's demand on sexual intercourse. This study excludes the forced sexual behaviour in order to analyze the process of determination at the sexual experience without coercion. The in-depth interview is used as the method of this study. The interviews to 11 females had hen taken from July in 1993 to February in 1994 and 8 cases among them were chosen as the subjects. The body of this thesis consists of three parts. The first part is about their attitude and recognition of sexuality before and after the demand on sexual intercourse. The second part is about their conflict on the virginal chastity Ideology. The third part is about the determination of sexual choice. The contents are as followed; They continue to accept sexual behaviour as natural representation until partner's demand on sexual intercourse. Sexual behaviour becomes to be the factor which confuses them. They recognize that the virginal chastity Ideology which prohibit the premarital intercourse collides with the positive attitude on the sexual behaviour in their conscious level. They appear to choose another seperate sexual attitude, because they differ from each other at the estimation of that Ideology and forecast to their coming position in this patriarchal society. Although they share the fear of deviation from the virginal chastity Ideology and the critical cognition to that sex-biased Ideology, the diverge from the position of the patriarchal marrige which reproduces that Ideology. They divide into two positions. One of them goes with the tide. That is ? belong to this position accommodate the stubbornness of the patriarchal structure which supports and reproduces that Ideology. They abandon their own sexual desire to attach to the major silence. Another position insists the critical cognition against that Ideology. Those who belong to this position want to choose not the patriarchal marriage but the alternative life. The subjects want to have another life which is not the same their mothers' lives and to have their own jobs. Those, the first position, wish to be able to depend their life on the future husbands, Their attitudes for the future jobs are relatively less sufficient than those who belong to the second position. These females choose their sexual life restricted under the coming marriage. Those who reject to the virginal chastity Ideology choose their sexual selection without the promise the marriage, but trust for each other. The attitude on that Ideology depends on the attitude on the way how they plan to the future life in this patriarchal society. Those who wish to have the autonomous life seem to prepare the autonomous attitude in their sexuality even though they don't have the independent economic area now. They prepare their future life on their schedule. What makes them to reject that Ideology is their critical cognition to the patriarchal structure and mechanism which oppresses women in sexuality. They search for the alternative norm that is centered by the human relations.
