영어의 예외적 격표시구문에 대한 연구

Abstract

본 논문의 목적은 영어의 예외적 격표시구문에 대한 분석이 어떤 역사적 변화를 겪어왔으며, 가장 설명력있는 분석은 어떤 것인지를 알아보는데 있다. 특히 이러한 구문이 보이는 예외적 성격을 어떻게 기존 문법의 체계내에 통합할 수 있는지에 대한 가능성을 제시하고자 한다. 격부여에의 예외성은 Chomsky(1981)로 대표되는 지배-결속(Government and Binding Theory)에서 두드러지게 나타난다. 그는 다른 구조격과는 달리 believe동사 부정사보문의 주어에 대한 격부여를 S￣-삭제라는 예외적인 방법으로 설명한다. Kayne(1981)의 ø-보문자(ø-complementizer)에 의한 격전이(Case Transmission) 방법이나, Chomsky(1986a)의 CP 혹은 IP라는 범주선택에 의한 방법 또한 같은 맥락에서 이해되어진다. 이와 같은 분석 방법의 문제점은 예외적 현상에 대한 분석 자체가 기존문법체계에 예외성을 갖고 있다는 것이다. 이러한 문제점은 Pollock(1989)의 굴절소분할가설(Split INFL Hypothesis)의 영향을 받은 Chomsky(1992)의 최소이론(Minimalist Theory)에서 그 해결책이 모색된다. 이 이론에서는 Postal(1974)의 인상분석을 받아들여 주격과 더불어 목적격과 예외격부여를 지정어-핵일치 관계로 설명함으로써 모든 구조격부여를 동일한 방법으로 일관성있게 분석해내고 있다. 이 이론 역시 허사의 격점검이나 보문자for에 의한 격부여에 있어서 문제점을 안고 있고, 아직도 논의의 여지가 많은 것은 사실이다. 그러나 본 논문에서는 최소이론이 예외적 격표시구문의 분석에 있어서 문법의 기본구조인 핵계층관계(X-relation)에 통합할 수 있음을 보여줌으로써 격문법 전체에 대한 설명력을 강화했다는데 그 의의를 찾고자 한다.;The purpose of this thesis is to look into the historical change of the analysis on the English exceptional Case-marking construction and to provide a more explanatory formulation. For this purpose, we try to show the possibility to integrate the exceptionality of the construction into the current grammatical system. The exceptionality of Case assignment on the subject of the complement of verbs of the believe category is notable in the Government and Binding Theory by Chomsky(1981). According to him, exceptional Case is assigned in a way of S￣-deletion. In this analysis, the notion of government is vital. The analyses of Kayne's(1981) Case transmission through Ø-complementizer and Chomsky(1986a)'s category selection such as CP or IP can be appreciated in the same veins. By the way, the crucial problem of these analysis is on the asymmetrical nature between the exceptional Case assignment and the other structural Case assignment. A solution for this problem is explored in the Minimalis Theory by Chomsky(1992), owing to Pollock(1989)'s Split INFL Hypothesis. This theory shows the assignment of structural Case, that is nominative, accusative and exceptional Case, by the Spec-head agreement relation adopting the raising analysis of Postal(1974). With this analysis the assignment of all the structural Case is explained in a coherent and symmetrical way. Although the Minimalist theory, too, has problems on the Case checking of expletive and the Case assignment by the complementizer for, it is significant in showing the possibility for integrating the exceptional Case assignment into the X-relation, which is the basic structure in the grammar. In conclusion, we wish to show that the Minimalist approach strengthens the explanatory power on the Case grammar.
