콜버그의 정의로운 공동체 접근에 대한 비판적 분석

Abstract

콜버그는, 도덕교육에 대한 자신의 초기 입장인 가설적인 도덕 딜렘마 토론수업이 도덕발달 이론의 연구결과들을 도덕교육 실제에 직접 적용한 것으로서 학교에서 실제적으로 이루어지는 도덕교육에 대한 적합성이 결여되어 있음을 인식하고, 대안적인 ‘도덕교육에의 정의로운 공동체 접근’(Just Community Approach to Moral Education)을 제시하였다. 도덕교육에 대한 콜버그의 정의로운 공동체 접근은, 학생들이 교사들과 동등한 권리를 행사하는 참여적 민주주의를 통해 학교의 통제구조(governance structure)를 세워나가는 가운데, 집단적인 규범적 가치와 공동체 의식을 발달시켜 나감으로써 학교자체를 정의로운 공동체로 만들어 나가는 것이다. 콜버그는 이러한 과정을 통해 학생들의 진정한 도덕적 성장을 가져올 수 있다고 주장하였다. 따라서 본 논문에서는, 문헌연구의 방법을 통하여, 콜버그가 주장하고 실천한 정의로운 공동체 접근에 대한 내용을 비판적으로 분석함으로써 콜버그의 정의로운 공동체 접근의 한계를 밝혀 보고자 하였다. 연구결과는 다음과 같다. 콜버그의 정의로운 공동체 접근은 규범적 모델로서의 한계를 지닌 것으로 나타났다. 콜버그는, 교사와 학생들이 학교 자체가 정의로운 공동체가 되어야 한다는(ought to) 규범적 이상을 공유하게 되면, 그에 따라 실천할 것이라고 가정하였다. 그러나, 자신이 직접 운영한 ‘Cluster School’에서는, 학생들과 교사들이 학교를 어떻게 정의로운 공동체로 발전시켜 가야 할지에 대한 공유된 행동방식을 발견하지 못한 가운데, 마약을 사용하는 문제가 공동체를 세우는 방식의 하나로 통용됨으로써 학교가 정의로운 공동체로 발전해 가는데 장애가 되는 심각한 문제를 야기시킨다. 그러므로 콜버그의 정의로운 공동체 접근에 근거하여 학교가 정의로운 공동체로 발전하기 위해서는 학생과 학생, 교사와 학생의 관계의 기본을 이루고 있는 기존의 사회적 행동방식이 통용되는 학교사회에서 정의로운 공동체에 적합한 새로운 행동방식을 탐구하는 연구가 보완되어야 할 것이다. 이렇게 될 때, 비로소 도덕교육에 대한 콜버그의 정의로운 공동체 접근이 도덕교육의 실체를 이끌 수 있는 구체적인 도덕고육의 방식으로 평가받을 수 있을 것이다. 또한 콜버그의 발달이론에 비추어 볼 때, 학교에서 참여적 민주주의를 세워 나가는 것은 교사와 학생모두가 감당하기 힘든 것이므로 이에 대한 재검토가 요청된다.;The purpose of this thesis is to give a critical analysis of Kohlberg's Just Community Approach to Moral Education. In light of his moral developmental theory, Kohlberg tried to grasp characteristics of moral education, suggest purpose and method of it, and apply it to educational practice. In other words, he developed the educational method of discussing hypothetical moral dilemma to promote the growth of stages of moral education. This approach to moral education, however, has its limitations by itself mainly because it directly applied psychological findings to moral education. Kohlberg proposed more comprehensive "Just Community Approach" to moral education to get over the limitations. This approach was intended to upgrade moral standards of schools themselves by making participatory democracy possible and boosting the sense of unity of school community, and to help students make steady progress both in their behavior and ability to judge. Such a moral education as Kohlberg proposed requires readjusting the structure of a school. But it is very difficult to bring about the readjustment because the structure of a school involves a basic relationship between students and teachers, and students and students. And it gives additional roles to teachers which they might find to be difficult to play. Nevertheless, Kohlberg's moral education theory, by suggesting an ideal fern of moral education, clearly points at a direction that moral educators should take in that it persues consistency between hidden curriculum and formal curriculum.
