Abstract
Jacob Ludwig Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy (1809-1847) left concertos only for violin and piano through his life, especially his violin concerto e minor has been regarded as a representative of German Romantic concerto. A concerto is a musical composition for solo instrument and orchestra, and it has a characteristic tone of solo violin and various tones of orchestra which are contrasting and harmonizing by an advanced execution. Concertos in instrumental meaning began to appear in the late 17th century and have developed very much throughout the Classic and Romantic period. His violin concerto e minor made new attempts in the form which are different from that of classic concerto. These new attemps are as follows: - in the first movement, while on the classical concerto the exposition of the first movement begins with the and tutti of an orchestra, in the new concerto such a tutti is omitted intentionaly solo violin presents the first theme of the first movement. After the cadenza in the first movement is played after development, and all the movements are performed without interruption. In the transition and second theme of the exposition of the first and the third movement, orchestra presents the chief theme and solo violin follows it. The distinction of development of each movement is ambiguous as the first, the second or transition themes are reversed and omitted, and other new principal themes are suggested throughout all the movements. These are romantic characteristics of this concerto. Also in the first movement, tempo is varied (Piu presto-Sempre presto-Presto), which adds the romantic characteristic of this concerto. These characteristics are succeeded to and developed into the Romantic concertos and are regarded as the chief features of the Romantic concertos. Another characteristics of Mendelssohn's violin concerto e minor are as follows: observing the Classic sonata form is style, showing that the tonal and harmonious connection is similar to that of Classic concerto, having lyrical and brilliant romantic melody, using the common rhythmic style related to all the movements, and demanding the virtuositic techniques such as scale, arpeggio, double stopping, octave technique, ricochet, double note tremolo, slur spiccato, etc. This work is one of the Romantic violin concertos which keeps to the pure Romanticism as well as the Classical style.
