공감능력과 이타성향간의 관련성 연구

Abstract

남을 잘 공감하는 사람은 다른 사람보다 이타적인 행동을 더 많이 할 것인가? 공감이란 타인의 참조 틀(frame of reference)에 들어가 그것에 익숙해지는 것이며, 그 사람이 매순간 경험하고 있는 내면의 느낌과 의미에 민감해지는 것이다(Rogers, 1957). 공감활동은 자신의 좁은 관점을 넘어서 타인을 감정과 생각, 상황을 이해하며 더 나아가 '나'와 '너'사이의 관계를 형성하는 것이다. 이런 의미에서의 공감은 자신과 타인의 인격적 가치에 적극적으로 참여하는, 진정한 도덕성이 발현된 것이기도 하다. 그렇다면 당연히 공감능력이 높은 사람은 이타적인 성향을 많이 보일 것이라고 생각되지만 실제로 이제까지의 연구에서는 공감능력과 이타성향간의 뚜렷한 상관을 보고하지 못하였다. 따라서 이 연구에서는 공감능력과 이타성향은 어떤 관련이 있는가? 라는 연구 문제를 바탕으로 두 변인 사이의 관련성을 살펴보고자 하였다. 이 연구 가설은 다음과 같다: (가설 1) 측정된 공감능력이 높은 사람은 상대적으로 낮은 사람에 비하여 남을 더 많이 배려하는 이타적 행동 경향을 보일 것이다. (가설 2) 공감의 하위요소 중 이타적 측면이 이기적 측면보다 이타성향과 더 높은 관련이 있을 것이다. 서울 및 경기 지역 대학 및 대학원생 총 454명(남=119명, 여=335명)을 대상으로 ‘공감척도(Interpersonal Reactivity Index: IRI)’와 ‘이타성향척도(I-Thou Questionnaire: ITQ)’ 질문지를 실시하였다. 이타성향척도는 이타적인 성향을 측정하기 위하여 이 연구에서 직접 개발한 것이다. 연구결과 첫째, 공감능력이 높을수록 더 높은 이타성향을 보였으며, 둘째, 공감의 하위 요소 중 공감적 관심이 개인적 고통보다 이타성향을 더 잘 설명하였다. 즉 공감의 속성 중 이타적 측면이 이기적 측면보다 이타성향을 더 잘 말해주고 있었다. 이를 통해 이 연구는 이타성향은 공감능력을 통해 유발된다는 ‘공감-이타주의 가설’을 지지하는 것을 볼 수 있었다.;The primary purpose of this study was to examine the relation between empathy and altruistic disposition. The research was conducted under the hypotheses that first, measured increased empathic disposition would be positively correlated to altruistic disposition; second empathy initiated by altruistic motive would be highly correlated with measured altruistic disposition than empathy initiated by selfish motive. The participants were 454 Korean college students (male=119, female=335) residing across the country, including Seoul, Kyung-gi, and Jeonla province. The present investigator developed a scale, I-Thou Questionnaire (ITQ), to measure altruistic disposition, and tested its validity and reliability. As expected, there was a positive correlation between empathy and altruistic disposition. The relations between altruistic disposition and cognitive aspect of empathy, and between altruistic disposition and affective aspect of empathy were statistically similar. Following analysis of regression, we added two sub-categories of empathy (perspective-taking and empathic concern) to the factors predicting altruistic disposition. The results showed that the ability of being empathic can account for predicting altruistic disposition. The author discussed implications and limitations of this study and proposed future research ideas.
