Korea's early modern history is marked by two major events: the Japanese colonization from 1910 to 1945, and the Korean War from 1950 to 1953.These events serve as a starting point for understanding Korean modern art because inevitably, Korean artists were influenced and affected by the currents of the time. It was during this period that numerous paintings depicting oxen were conceived. Prior to the modern era, traditional paintings of oxen were a popular theme in the animal genre. However, with the introduction of oil painting in the modern era, Korean artists began to depict oxen using this new medium. Although, there are paintings of oxen rendered in the traditional style during the modern era, this thesis will focus on paintings of oxen rendered in the Western style. Despite the wide variety of Westernized paintings depicting oxen, most of the research in this area is centered on Joong Seop Lee's paintings of oxen. Other research focuses on paintings of oxen drawn by four different members, including Joong Seop Lee, of the New Artists' Association(新美術家協會). Current research surrounding Joong Seop Lee’s paintings of oxen shows several different interpretations. The most common interpretation is of the ox as a symbol of nationalism representing the sentiments of the people during the modern era. The image of the ox was associated with Joong Seop Lee and reproduced in junior high and high school text books during the modern era. As evidenced by these junior high and high school text books, the image of the ox as a symbol of the nation and the sentiments of the people was widely circulated and generalized. Other interpretations of Joong Seop Lee's ox paintings includes the image of the ox as an expression of the artist's internal conflicts, a self portrait, and a reflection of the current plight of the nation. However, the scope of the research regarding paintings of oxen is limited to Joong Seop Lee's paintings. The purpose of this thesis, therefore, is to examine the depiction of oxen in Korean modern paintings. However, because Korean artists specializing in Western paintings trained in Japan rather than in Europe, during the Japanese colonization period, it is important to first understand the various art movements and trends in modern Japanese art. Therefore, in an effort to produce a more comprehensive study, this thesis examines the depiction of oxen in both Westernized Korean and Japanese modern paintings. In this thesis, Korean and Japanese paintings of oxen are initially categorized into two large groups: paintings reflecting pastoral aspects, and paintings reflecting primitive aspects. Paintings within the pastoral and primitive groups are further divided into subgroups based on the themes and motifs. This methodology aided in identifying distinctive traits and characteristics of modern Korean paintings of oxen. Upon examining both Korean and Japanese paintings, the most noticeable difference is that Japanese paintings tend to represent dairy cows while Korean paintings tend to represent oxen. In other words, the image of the dairy cow in an idealistic pastoral setting which is commonly found in Japanese paintings is absent from Korean paintings. Instead, Korean paintings depict oxen in a simple pastoral setting. Since both Korean and Japanese paintings are pastoral in nature, they are not realistic representations of country life. However, in general Japanese paintings of oxen with pastoral aspects tend emphasize the majestic, grand, and idealistic beauty of nature, while Korean paintings of oxen tend to emphasize plain, unsophisticated, rustic simplicity of nature. Furthermore, by choosing to represent one animal over the other reflects the differing intentions of the Korean and Japanese artists. During the Japanese colonization period, there was a move to make a clear distinction between Japan countryside and the countryside’s of the colonies. As a result, in government sponsored exhibitions, the judges expected a certain type of imagery depending on the ethnicity of the artist. Since this was the current situation, Korean artists may have unconsciously drawn this image of Korea defined by the Japanese. However, on the other hand, during the Japanese colonization period Korea was less developed, industrialized and modernized compared to Japan. Naturally, Korean artists may have painted the environment and scenery surrounding them, which was less developed than Japan. Modern Korean paintings of oxen with pastoral aspects depict man and ox, and ox motifs, while paintings of oxen with primitive aspects depict only the man and ox motif. Paintings with pastoral aspects depicting the man and ox motif are further divided into three categories: the working image of man and ox, family and ox, and child and ox. Some examples of the man and ox motif are seen in paintings by Dahl Seok Yang, Uck Jin Jang and Joong Seop Lee. In these paintings the relationship between the man and the ox is expressed by representing the ox as an integral part of the family unit. In the second group of pastoral paintings of oxen, the ox is depicted alone, without any human presence. Also the oxen in these paintings fill the majority of the canvas. In these paintings, the ox is used as a symbol to represent the artist. Interestingly, in Sakamoto Hanjiro's painting Faint Sunlight, a dairy cow is used to symbolize the artist, whereas in Joong Seop Lee's painting The Ox, an ox is used to symbolize the artist. Paintings by Kyung Kim and Joong Seop Lee depict only the head of an ox. These paintings are unique because the artists seem to be humanizing the animals by emphasizing their facial expressions. Such paintings depicting only the head are not common in Japanese paintings. Korean modern paintings of oxen with primitive aspects depict either a young woman and an ox, or a young boy and an ox. Paintings by Joong Seop Lee and Hye Soo Song dating to the 1940's depict a young woman and an ox. In these paintings the woman's nude body is intertwined with the ox or the woman is fondling the ox. As a result, these paintings emphasize the sensual, violent and the savage aspect of the ox. Paintings by Young Sun Park and Sung Hwan Park dating to the 1950's also depict a woman and an ox. However, in these paintings, a fully clothed woman holding a jar on her head is standing in the foreground next to an ox. The imagery depicted in these paintings can be interpreted as symbols of Korea. During the Japanese colonization period, such images of women holding jars on their heads, children, giseng (female entertainers) and women wearing traditional Korean costumes were all placed on postcards promoting tourism in Korea. Although the prototypes for the images of women holding jars and oxen were originally intended to emphasize the primitive aspects of Korea, Korean artists stylistically and structurally developed these images to suit their tastes. In conclusion, Westernized Korean paintings of oxen reflect various images and symbolisms of the ox. In most cases, the artist takes the image of the ox and reworks it to suit his needs. In other words, the image of the ox becomes personalized by each individual artist.;본 연구는 한국 근대 서양화의 소 그림을 분석하기 위해 우선 일본 근대 서양화의 소 그림부터 살펴보았다.
