The purpose of this study is to explore the relationship among the attribution of responsibility for a problem and spirituality and religious orientation in respect to comparing Christians with nonreligious people. The study applied Brickman's attribution style, which involves four dimensions that can be used concurrently to infer the attribution of responsibility for a problem's cause and the attribution of responsibility for a problem's solution in certain negative social and psychological circumstances and outcomes. The following research questions were thus explored, "Is a Christian's attribution style for a problem's cause and solution different from nonreligious groups?" and "In what ways does a Christian's spirituality and religious orientation affect his or her attributional responsibility for a problem?" Three hypotheses were considered, such as Hypothesis 1: Christians, compared with nonreligious group, will have a higher result in the 'moral dimension' of Brickman's model, which is characterized by an internal attribution to both a problem's cause and solution; Hypotheses 2: Within the Christian group, the intrinsic religious group will have a higher value in the 'moral dimension' of Brickman's model compared to the extrinsic religious group; Hypotheses 3: Spirituality and religious orientation interacting, especially when the intrinsic religious orientation acts as moderator, will have an influence on the attribution of responsibility intrinsically. A total of 419 subjects, 260 Christians and 159 nonreligious individuals, from Seoul and Daegu were participants of this study. The tools used for the experiment were 'The Problematic Circumstances' Attribution of Responsibility Style Scale', developed by proper researcher, Religious Scale (Faulkner & DeJong, 1965), and Religious Orientation Scale (Allport & Ross, 1967), along with some questions regarding demographics and religion. The statistics analysis was performed using the t-test and structural equation modeling. Distinctions, such as attribution of responsibility styles between the Christian and nonreligious groups, and the religious orientations within a Christian group were investigated using the analytical tools. Structural relationships amongst spirituality, religious orientation and attribution of responsibility were also analysed and determined. The results found in this study revealed that the Christian group possessed more internal attribution in both the cause and solution for the problem than the nonreligious group, and thus supported a significant degree of Brickman's moral dimension. Amongst Christians, the intrinsic religious group showed a significantly greater tendency for internal attribution for the solution of the problem than the extrinsic religious group. Regarding the structural relationships amongst the attribution of responsibility, spirituality, and religious orientation, the results found that spirituality significantly affects the intrinsic religious orientation in a positive way. In other words, as spirituality increases, the intrinsic religious orientation increases as well. Similarly, the intrinsic religious orientation significantly affects the attributional responsibility for a problem's solution in a positive way. On the contrary, spirituality significantly affects the extrinsic orientation in a negative way. The extrinsic religious orientation demonstrates a negative effect on the attribution of responsibility style for both problem's cause and solution. Through the structural modeling of this study, noteworthy findings included the direct negative effect of spirituality in the attribution of responsibility for a problem's solution. It means that spirituality in itself has the tendency to display the extrinsic attributional style of responsibility, but other moderators, such as intrinsic religious orientation and some personal factors will influence spirituality to attribute responsibility more intrinsically.;이 연구는 부적 결과로 생긴 어떤 문제 원인 및 문제 해결에 대한 책임의 소재에 있어서 개인적‧내적인 혹은 상황적‧외적인 요인으로 귀인하는 책임귀인의 양식이 기독교인과 비종교인 집단에서 차이가 있는지를, 그리고 기독교인 내에서도 종교정향성에 따라 책임귀인 양식이 달라지는지를, 문제의 원인 및 해결에 대한 책임귀인을 구별하여 4가지 차원으로 제시하는 Brickman 모델을 사용하여 확인하고, 기독교인의 종교성과 종교정향이 문제책임귀인 양식에 미치는 영향을 밝히고자 하였다.
