Abstract
Nowadays Adolescents’ drinking behaviors have been changing from the ordinary drinking to the problem drinking. According to related statistics, one out of four adolescents has serious drinking problems and 90% of them are high school students. I argue that there would be some relations between the adolescents’ problem drinking which is related to the physical, psychological, and socio-psychological matters, and the influences of a lot of entertainment spots and alcohol outlets around adolescents’ home surroundings. This research will argue the relationship between residential surroundings and Adolescent's’ drinking problems. Too many outlets and alcohol entertainment places around their houses make adolescents’ access to drinking easy and go drinking problems. This study examines residential surroundings as an influential factor of adolescents' alcohol problems. This study discusses as following First, examine adolescents’ordinary drinking behaviors and problem related drinking behaviors. Second, examine the influence of the density of alcohol outlets or entertainments around their houses to problem related drinking. And find out residential surroundings as an influential factor of adolescents' alcohol problems. Third, compare parents' factor with friends’ factor, and find out which factor is the most influential. This research concludes the residential surrounding factor as key variable. The data were collected from April 26 to May 6, 2006. Total 419 high school students in two different local areas in Seoul participated in this study. This collected data is analyzed by frequency distribution, correlation and multiple regression analysis by SPSS 11.0/PC program. The results of this study are as follows: First, the survey on the relationship between residential surroundings and adolescents’ problem drinking results correlations between variables. Therefore, residential surroundings are meaningful factors which have significant influence on adolescent's problem drinking. Second, from the comparative analysis on other factors, such as parental factors and friend factors, residential factor, I found following results: In ordinary drinking behaviors such as drinking amount, drinking frequency, and residential factors are the most influential factors. On the other hands, in problem related drinking, the friend factor such as friend's attitude to drinking, peer pressure to drink is the most influential factor. From these results, too many outlets and places of alcohol entertainment around the house influence adolescents’ access to drink and to go problem drinking. Another influential factors in problem drinking in adolescents are friends’ attitudes toward alcohols and peer pressure to drink. To protect adolescent from problem drinking, we need to change our residential environments. There are a lot of alcohol outlets and places of alcohol entertainment around home surroundings. Therefore, for restriction on liquor sales the system of permission on liquor sales can reduce alcohol use, adolescents’ alcohol use in particular.
