영화〈The Aviator〉의 복식과 색채 이미지

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to study the costume and color image of Howard Hughes, Katharine Hepburn and Eva Gardner expressed in the movie through the movie“the Aviator”which cinematized“Howard Hughes: The Secret Life”by Charles Higham. In the literature, there was no direct reference to the symbolic image from the color but the symbolic image could be seen from the color through the situation in which the play unfolded. Firstly, looking at the costumes and their color images expressed in the movie, one extreme of Hughes’image to another was expressed in order to show his extreme inner world by using the light-dark contrast rather than specific colors as the base. In contrast to brightness, the expression of darkness represents a fretful change of his mind. On the other hand, such a light-dark contrast depicted Hughes with an unhealthy mentality such as boyish frailness and a frantic adhesion in contrast to his external perfection. The gold color used to express the image of Hepburn represented an image expressing her intelligence, grace, affection, maturity and a motherly warmness with fullness. As for her dress silhouette, the taste of maturity was displayed by a dress whose back was exposed with a grownup-style feminine silhouette or one with drapes and pleats ornaments. On the other hand, the pants look that contrasted the white color with the dark green or dark red expressed Hepburn’s individual and liberal character. To express Gardner’s image; that is, her alluring charm and glow, a vivid red color was used. This displays her fiery character, toughness and fascination. In addition, her provocative temptation was far more maximized by arranging the red, blue and violet colors. As for her costume, her splendid and fascinating image was expressed by the 40s’ rectangular-shouldered tailored suit, exotic peasant blouse and showy accessories. Secondly, the color image expressed in the background in the movie was exhibited through the screening room and men’s room, a special space for Hughes. The red screening room was shown to be as a space for passion, desire and escape and the green men’s room as a space for stability and rest. Through the color which has a great optical symbolic effect in the contemporary society where the image industry is ever growing, this study recognized its power of expressing and transmitting information and its contribution to the formation of a subject and studied the costumes and color images expressed in the movie.;본 연구는 찰스 하이햄의 『Howard Hughes: The Secret Life(1993)』을 영상화한 영화<The Aviator(2004)>를 통해서, 영화 속에 표현된 Howard Hughes와 Katharine Hepburn 그리고 Eva Gardner의 복식과 색채 이미지를 연구하는 데, 그 목적이 있다. 연구 방법은 영화<The Aviator>의 원작『Howard Hughes: The Secret Life』을 바탕으로 등장인물(Hughes, Hepburn, Gardner)의 이미지를 살펴보았고, 영화<The Aviator>의 DVD와 국내외 문헌자료, 신문, 잡지, 인터넷등의 기사 및 사진을 중심으로, 등장인물의 복식과 그 색채 이미지, 그리고 배경에 표현된 색채 이미지의 표출을 고찰하였다. 원작에서는 색채에 따른 상징적 이미지에 관한 직접적인 언급이나 표현은 없었으나, 극이 전개되는 상황을 통해 색채에 따른 상징적 이미지를 알 수 있었다. 첫 번째로, 영화 속에 표현된 복식과 그 색채 이미지를 살펴보면,Howard Hughes의 이미지는 그의 극단적인 내면세계를 나타내기 위해, 특정한 색채를 기본으로 사용하기보다는, 명암의 대비를 이용하여 극과 극의 이미지를 표현했다. 밝음과 대조적으로 어두움의 표현은 그의 불안하고 초조한 심경의 변화를 나타냈다. 또 한편으로는 이러한 명암의 대비는 그의 외면적인 완벽함과는 대조적으로 내면의 소년 같은 연약함과 광적인 집착 등 건강하지 못한 그의 정신상태를 나타냈다. 의상에 있어서는 더블 브레스트 슈트를 기본으로, 블레이저, 밀리터리 가죽재킷, 조드퍼즈로 휴즈를 표현했다. Katharine Hepburn의 이미지를 표현하기 위해 사용된 금색은 그녀의 지적이고 우아함, 그리고 애정, 성숙, 충만함의 모성적인 따뜻함을 표현해내는 이미지로 나타났다. 의상에서는 성인풍의 여성적인 실루엣으로 등이 노출되는 드레스나, 드레이프와 주름장식의 드레스로 성숙미를 나타냈다. 반면, 흰색과 짙은 녹색이나 어두운 붉은색의 대비를 이룬 팬츠 룩은, 개성적이고 자유로운 햅번의 성격을 표현했다. Eva Gardner의 이미지 표현을 위해서는 그녀의 매혹적이고 강렬함을 나타내기 위해, 원색의 빨간색을 사용했다. 이것은 그녀의 불 같은 성격과 터프함, 그리고 매혹적인 그녀를 나타냈다. 더불어 빨간색과 파란색, 보라색의 배색을 통하여 그녀의 강렬한 유혹을 더욱 극대화시켰다. 그녀의 복식은 1940년대의 각진 어깨의 테일러드 슈트와 이국적인 페전트 블라우스 그리고 화려한 액세서리를 통해서 그녀를 화려하고 매혹적인 이미지로 표현했다. 이상과 같이 영화 속의 주인공 3인의 남녀복식은 1930년대 초반의 미국의 할리우드 복식부터 전후 1940년대의 복식까지 잘 표현하였다. 두 번째로, 영화 속 배경에 표현된 색채 이미지는 휴즈에게 특별했던 공간인 screening room과 men’s room을 통해서 그 이미지를 표출했다. 빨간색의 screening room은 휴즈의 열정과 욕망, 도피의 공간으로 나타났고, 녹색의 men’s room은 세균공포증의 휴즈가 안정과 휴식을 취할 수 있는 공간으로 표현했다. 본 연구에서는, 점차 이미지 산업화 되어가는 현대 사회에서, 시각적인 상징효과가 크게 작용하는 색채를 통해, 이것이 가지는 정보 표현과 전달력, 그리고 주제 형성에 기여하는 바를 인식하고, 영화 속에 표현된 복식과 색채 이미지를 연구하였다.
