십대 여성의 외모 관리 문화에 관한 연구

Abstract

본 연구는 최근 십대 여성들의 일상 속에서 중요한 문화로 자리 잡은 십대 여성들의 외모 관리 문화에 집중하여, 새로운 방식으로 작동되고 있는 성별권력 관계에 대해 탐구해 보고자하는 시도이다. 특히, 본 연구는 현재 십대 여성들의 외모 관리 문화가 급속도로 부각되고 있음에도 불구하고, 사회가 십대 여성들을 여전히 미성숙의 단계로 정의함으로써 십대 여성들의 경험이 제대로 드러나거나 분석되지 못하였음은 물론, 이로 인해 궁극적으로 남성 중심의 가부장제 사회를 유지시켜 주는 여성 억압적인 외모 관리에 대한 거시적 안목을 가질 수 없게 하고 있다는 문제의식에서 출발하였다. 변화된 사회 환경에 노출되어 있음에도 불구하고 여전히 십대라는 나이의 한계로 인해 비가시화되어 있는 십대 여성의 외모 관리 문화의 실천 내용들을 십대 여성들의 일상을 통해 드러내고, 이와 같은 과정을 통해 십대 여성들의 외모 관리 문화는 다시 십대 여성들만의 강화기제를 가지고 유지 및 재생산되고 있음을 밝혀 보고자 한다. 즉, 현재 십대 여성들에게 외모 관리는 과거에서처럼 대다수가 미래의 어느 시점으로 보류하고 일부 극성스러운 십대 여성들만이 실천하거나 혹은 실천한다고 하여도 성인 여성들의 외모 관리를 그대로 모방하는 차원에서 행해지는 것이 아니라, 그들의 일상 속에서 끊임없이 외모에 대한 언설들이 오고가며 외모에 대한 나름의 보상과 비판이 즉각적으로 나타나면서 대부분의 십대 여성들에게 당장의 시급한 과제로 여겨지고 있다. 그러므로 현재 십대 여성들의 외모 관리 문화는 사회 속에서 사회와 적극적으로 관계를 맺으면서, 그리고 또한 십대 여성들 생애 단계에 따른 독자적인 방식으로 실천되고 있다. 본 연구는 이와 같은 맥락을 연구해 봄으로써, 궁극적으로 십대 여성의 외모 관리 문화를 여성들이 전생애를 통해 실천하는 거대한 외모 관리 문화의 새로운 시작 지점으로 정의하고, 이를 전체 외모 관리의 지형 속에서 파악하여 현대 사회에서 더욱 정교하고 세련된 방식으로 작동하고 있는 성별권력관계를 드러내 보고자 한다. 본 연구는 십대 여성들을 주된 연구 대상으로 하여, 심층 면접기법을 통해 그들의 일상에 녹아 있는 외모 관리 실천의 경험들을 가능한 한 그들의 목소리 그대로 수집하려고 노력하였다. 또한 연구와 직·간접적으로 연관된 인터넷 자료, 신문, 잡지, 영상 자료 등을 보조 자료로 활용하였다. 연구의 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 소비사회라는 변화된 사회 환경에 노출되어 있는 현재의 십대 여성들은 소비 사회 속에서 소비주체로 위치하면서 표면적으로는 주체성을 인정받고 있는 듯 하지만 실제 소비 사회의 거대한 외모 관리 산업의 주대상층으로 객체화되고 있으며, 이와 같은 사회 구조로 인해 십대 여성들에게 외모 관리는 필수적인 국면을 형성한다. 둘째, 사회 구조로 인한 외모 관리의 필요성은 십대 여성들이 그들 스스로를 몸적 존재로 정의하고 이를 일상 속에서 적극적으로 실천하게 하면서 이와 같은 과정을 통해, 십대 나름의 유지 및 강화 기제 또한 만들어 가게 된다. 셋째, 이 처럼 십대 여성의 중요한 문화로 자리 잡은 외모 관리 문화는 그럼에도 불구하고, 십대 여성들의 십대라는 생의 한계로 인해 외모 관리를 용인한 동일한 사회 속에서 동시에 이와는 반대로 다시 비난의 대상으로 정의되고 이는 십대 여성들의 외모 관리를 추동하는 사회 구조를 은폐하는 결과를 초래한다. 미성숙함이라는 생의 한계로부터 비롯된 사회 구조의 은혜는 결국 십대 여성의 외모 관리 문화에 대한 여성주의적 비판을 무화시키는 지점으로 연결된다. 그러므로 십대 여성의 외모 관리 문화는 은폐되어 있는 사회 구조를 드러내어 사회적 구성물임을 밝히고, 이는 궁극적으로 여성이 전생애에 걸쳐 행하고 있는 외모 관리의 본격적인 시작지점으로써 거대한 외모 관리의 전체적인 지형 속에서 이해되고 비판되어야 할 것이다.;This study is to examine the gendered relations of power by focusing on the culture of caring for outward appearance by teenage girls that is gaining more speed in their everyday life. Particularly this study stems from the critical mind that despite the rapid salience given to the culture of caring for outward appearance by teenage girls, as the society defines teenage girls belonging to the stage of immaturity, the experience in caring for outward appearance by teenage girls neither emerge became known nor got analyzed but subsequently such definition which maintains the male-oriented patriarchal system eventually deterred people from having broad perspective on abusive caring for outward appearance by women. Despite the exposure to the changed social environment the culture of caring for outward appearance by teenage girls is veiled as limit of teenage, and this study is to prove that is maintained and reproduced by strengthening mechanism only available to teenage girls through the process of manifesting the contents of practice on caring for outward appearance by teenage girls in their everyday life. That is, for teenage girls today caring for outward appearance is not a practice to be postponed to some points in the future to be practiced by some overeager teenage girls as it was in the past but even if practiced, it is not just wholly copying from adult women. However, caring for outward appearance is regarded as an urgent matter that cannot be left alone into some time in the future as remarks on outward appearance are exchanged and immediate rewards and criticism given accordingly. Therefore, as the culture of caring for outward appearance by teenage girls forms an active connection with the society it is being practiced in an independent way that is suitable to the lifetime of teenage girls. By studying such coherence, this study will ultimately define the culture of caring for outward appearance by teenage girls as the onset point of the immense culture of women caring for outward appearance that is practiced through the lifetime of women and show the gendered relations of power that works in a more sophisticated and refined way in the modern society by understanding the topography of caring for the overall outward appearance. This study, with teenage girls as the main subject of the study, made an attempt to collect the experiences of practices for caring for outward appearance imbued in their everyday life through in-depth interviews in the form of as much unaffected voices of teenage girls as possible. In addition, this study used internet data, newspapers, magazines, visual data that are directly and indirectly related to the study as secondary sources. The result of study is as follows. First, even though teenage girls today who are exposed to the changed social environment may appear to position themselves as the main body of consumption in the consumer society, they become the object of main substitute class for this immense outward appearance management industry of the actual consumer society and subsequently caring for outward appearance has entered a necessary phase for teenage girls due to such social structure. Second, the necessity of caring for outward appearance due to the social structure defines themselves as bodily being and as they practice it in everyday life they maintain their status as teenage girls and make strengthening mechanism. Third, although caring for outward appearance has secured its position as an important part of teenage girls' culture, due to the limited span of teenage years they are allowed to care for outward appearance by the same society which on the other hand regards teenage girls as the subject of condemnation and this results in the concealment of the social structure that drives caring for outward appearance by teenage girls. The blessing of the social structure that originates from the limited span of immaturity is eventually connected to the point where the feministic criticism on the culture of caring for outward appearance by teenage girls is brought to naught. Therefore the culture of caring for outward appearance by teenage girls must bring out the social structure concealed by the age span of teenage girls as social composition and ultimately it must be regarded as the earnest onset point of caring for outward appearance women practice for lifetime and be understood and criticized under the entire topography of immense caring for outward appearance by women.
