Abstract
Music is often referred to as the language that transcends nationality. However, music contains cultural distinctions and understandings that correspond with language in the emotions and feelings. It conveys music may not be as specific in communicating exact meanings as language; however, the two are quite similar because they both convey meaning through sound. Also, the relationship between the musical language of a composer and his mother tongue and spiritual culture are inseparable. Knowing this, I researched on a modern korean composer, Isang Yun(1917-1995) based on 『Fünf Stücke für Klavier(1958)』. Isang Yun was born in Tong Young during the Japanese Colonial Era. His talents came to light when he was 13 years old through a short piece he wrote for a study. He started his studies in composing and Cello in Seoul and Japan, and later went on to study in Europe. He received the death penalty for his involvement in the Tong-baek-lim incident, but was spared thanks to an international campaign to save his life and was exiled to Germany. There he was branded as a 'composer in exile', who turned his back to his mother nation. So, one of the most influential Korean composers of modern music in the 20th century did most of his work in Germany, and eventually died there being unable to return to his home country. He left numerous pieces besides five symphonies, and for pieces solo piano, such as『Fünf Stücke für Klavier(1958)』and 『A-Interludium (1982)』. Of these, the pieces I wish to research on,『Fünf Stücke für Klavier』, are based on the dodecaphony of Schönberg. The the sudden and extreme changes in dynamic and the efficient use of syncopation are the main characteristics of these pieces. The time period in which this piece was written clearly shows the scholarly aspect of Isang Yun while he analyzed the dodecaphony. However, his mines composition technique, which he called "the language of my music", some used elements of korean tradition music : rhythm and the melody, however, he didn't include sigimsae in his composition. The purpose of this study is to classify his works and musical background based on the time frame. Also, it is realizing his musical disposition during the early days of his studies in Europe through one of his earlier works, the 『Fünf Stücke für Klavier』and technically and musically analyze this complicatedly piece so that it can be accessed more easily. I hope this research will attract people is attention towards this work as the piece of a Korean composer, and not simply as a difficult piece that is performed more often in the West.
