상위 언어적 부정과 상위 표상의 초점

Abstract

본 논문에서는 부정의 유표적 쓰임, 상위 언어적 부정을 중심으로 부정문에 대한 다양한 이론을 고찰하고, 적합성 이론의 상위 표상 개념을 이용하여 상위 언어적 부정을 설명한 Noh(2000, 2001)의 이론에 Iwata(1998)의 초점 분석을 적용하고자 한다. 먼저, 상위 언어적 부정의 초기 이론으로서 부정을 진리 조건적 의미론에 입각하여 분석한 Russell(1905)의 함의 이론, Strawson(1950)의 전제 이론, Karttunen과 Peters(1979)의 모순 부정 이론을 살펴본다. 다음으로, 부정에 대한 화용론적 분석법을 비판적으로 고찰한다. 상위 언어적 부정의 대표적 학자인 Horn(1985, 1989)은 부정의 화용적 중의성을 주장한다. Burton-Roberts(1989, 1999)는 모순과 재분석을 이용하여 상위 언어적 부정을 설명하며, van der Sandt(1991)는 부정과 거부의 개념을 구분하고 반향 연산자를 사용하여 상위 언어적 부정을 설명한다. 그 다음으로 Sperber와 Wilson(1986/1995)의 적합성 이론을 바탕으로 상위 언어적 부정을 분석한 이론을 고찰한다. 그 대표적인 이론으로 상위 언어적 부정을 묵시적인 반향적 발화로 본 Carston(1996)의 이론과 상위 표상과 화용적 의미 보충의 개념을 이용하여 상위 언어적 부정을 설명한 Noh(2000, 2001)의 이론을 살펴본다. 마지막으로 본 논문에서는, ‘상위 언어적 부정에서의 부정의 접두사화 불가’와 ‘상위 언어적 부정에서의 부정 극어 불가’ 현상을 ‘반향의 초점’ 개념을 이용하여 구체화한 Iwata(1998)의 분석을 ‘상위 표상의 초점’으로 수정하여 Noh(2000, 2001)의 상위 언어적 부정 분석에 적용한다. 또한 이를 반향 의문문 분석에도 적용한다.;The purpose of this thesis is to make a critical review of some representative theories of negation in English, focusing on the marked use of negation, i.e., metalinguistic negation, and to apply Iwata's (1998) concept of focus of echo to Noh's (2000, 2001) metarepresentation theory. First, Russell's (1905) entailment theory of negation, Strawson's (1950) presupposition theory of negation, and Karttunen and Peters' (1979) contradiction negation theory, all of which are based on truth-conditional semantics, are reviewed as some early theories of metalinguistic negation. Second, Horn's (1985, 1989), Burton-Roberts' (1989, 1999), and van der Sandt's (1991) pragmatic approaches to negation are reviewed. As a representative scholar of metalinguistic negation, Horn proposes pragmatic ambiguity of negation. Burton-Roberts explains metalinguistic negation by using the concepts of contradiction and re-analysis. Van der Sandt makes an essential distinction between negation and denial, and explains metalinguistic negation by using an ‘echo operator'. Third, Carston's (1996) and Noh's (2000, 2001) theories, which are based on Sperber & Wilson's (1986/1995) relevance theory, are discussed. Carston analyzes metalinguistic negation with a concept of echoic utterance, whereas Noh explains metalinguistic negation by using the concepts of metarepresentation and pragmatic enrichment. Finally, I discuss two of Horn's diagnostics of metalinguistic negation, i.e., ‘the inability of metalinguistic negation to incorporate morphologically’ and ‘the prohibition against negative polarity items,’ which are not thoroughly dealt with by Noh (2000, 2001). I attempt to complement Noh's analysis of metalinguistic negation by accounting for the two diagnostics of metalinguistic negation with the concept of focus of metarepresentation, adapted from Iwata's (1998) concept of focus of echo. I also attempt to account for echo questions with the concept of focus of metarepresentation.
