Abstract
The purpose of this thesis is to signify women’s pleasure through their experience in couple dancing, which has gained much popularity in the last five years as a leisurely activity, as well as to examine their experience of the new body and self through dancing. Moreover, it will examine how the women perform femininity as they participate in the couple dance that reenact heterosexual romance as well as to explore the meaning of the new body that is experienced by the women in the process. In particular, the study will also examine how the greater diversity in the people who participate in couple dances is changing the pattern and meaning of “couple” in couple dances and how such a change is politically linked to “woman” as a normalized category. For primary source of the study, I conducted in-depth interview with women of various age groups who participate in couple dances. For secondary source, the study includes the experience of women who solo dance, women who couple dance in an all women dance group, and men who couple dance, as well as articles and commentaries from various popular media. In the background of the rising popularity of couple dancing as leisure activity is global consumerism. The rise in the popularity of American swing and Latin American salsa and tango in South Korea is a manifestation of South Korea’s purchasing power to import and consume foreign cultural commodities. Moreover, in the consumer culture that glorifies pleasure seeking life through consumption and leisure, dancing has come to symbolize a new body and sensibility that is totally focused on the moment and immersed in the flesh, a stark contrast to the productive body in the industrial age. With the explosion of discourse around physical fitness and health management, dancing is seen as a cultural commodity for self management through which well-maintained self, well-maintained body is realized. Thus, dancing, seen as an art, or technique, of managing one’s body, self, and daily life, has become a popular leisurely activity. Through the experience of embodied collective pleasure and materiality of the body through couple dancing, women experience an expanded body that is unlike their previous selves. To maintain this pleasure, the women reconstruct and plan their future, negotiating for their own space, thus expanding and changing their lives as they cross over numerous boundaries fueled by their passion for dancing. However, considering that the women’s disadvantaged social and economic position and their single marital status are what allow them to invest their passion in dancing, the pleasure and the liberating feeling experienced by South Korean single women are rooted in their social and cultural context. As reenactment of heterosexual romance, in which men’s dancing skills and women’s physical qualities are exchanged like commodities, couple dance traditionally required women to have certain physical qualities as prerequisites for participation. However, while they perform and express their femininity through their bodies in their participation in couple dances, the women expand their realm of self-control and transform the dance floor into a place to manifest the erotic body. With the popularization of couple dances and the greater diversity in women participants, the heterosexual structure and pattern of couple dance began to shift. New couples outside of the heterosexual coupling are formed, parading sexuality in the “three-minute romance” of couple dance and expanding the categories of femininity and masculinity. Couple dancing as an experimental stage where gender is performed, the study attempts to examine from the feminist perspective the changes in gender relations in South Korean society with the arrival of couple dances.
