'순수의 시대' 영화의상 디자인 연구 : May와 Ellen의 의상을 중심으로

Abstract

This study analyzed the costume and color symbolism of the film based on the novel, The Age of Innocence written by Edith Wharton. The purpose of this study is the creation of the movie costume and hair-style of two heroines. To consider the expression of image symbolism with image color, this study was conducted by referring the film, the DVD title as visual aids, paper materials and based on the original literature. The two heroines are May and Ellen who lead the huge irony that is principal stream of a novel. The costume design of them was planned along the character which was analyzed and interpreted irony of a drama in a viewpoint of Wharton through this study and expressed with illustration. And using 57cm Porcelain Doll, produced a hair-style and costume. A movie costume transmits character of actors and actresses and information related to them as elements to be the closest to human-being among the symbolic mark systems reflected in an image. And the effect of color in that image is the most instant among visual information for human to perceive, and it is continuous. Edith Wharton who is a realism writer, and a master of manners and customs novel, is the first Pulitzer Prizewinner as a woman. Wharton s novels have abundant expressions of color in addition to a precision description and they express character of a person in a costume style and the color expressions symbolically. Wharton granted the costume style and the color that were contrastive to the two heroines who appeared in The Age of Innocence and made their each standing image. And each image is represent on a display of the front and back of innocence symbolically. May stands for Irony of innocence and Ellen does for Absolute innocence . May expresses only a formal image of Old New York symbolically and wears white costume, white gloves with lilies. On the other hand, Ellen showing a tendency of absolute innocence looks with the inside and an appearance being matched, and appears with a flame symbolizing a passion, the yellow roses symbolizing affluent beauty and gold to symbolize fertility what is mysterious, and wears costumes of red color. The director, Martin Scorsese who put a focus of the movie with cruelty , when he produced the images of two heroines at the film, expressed substances of May and Ellen lightly. Though Writer Wharton criticizes young May with boredom without newness, at the same time she admits May who has dignity which keeps Old New York. But Scorsese expressed May just cute, little and focused May to cold-blooded cruelty to expel Ellen. Also, in the film, Ellen was expressed with the blonde hair, blue eyes which stands for the Western idiocy who is not a brunette which has an intelligent image in the novel. Gabriella Pescucci who was a movie costume designer at that film did not stop in a historical recurrence at the expression of clothing. The color of May s clothing added the gloomy gray which express backside of the innocence to green which symbolize youth, that is, a principal base color of costume used dark green and emphasized the formal image of innocence with white. On the other hand, the costume of Ellen was expressed with the dark red that mixed red which symbolize a passion with black used in the original to express uniqueness and a conspicuous tendency. And it was designed to bustle silhouette line which expose the upper part of shoulders to express the frankness that the inside and an appearance were matched. And the costume was made with satin material which can express a image of the upper class and is matched with the conclusion of researching authentic period costumes of 1870 s. A movie costume transmits personal information about a player immediately and has a function to lead a spread of a drama as the symbolic meaning of a dress-style. And introduction of a modern sense by a movie costume designer is essential it to carry out that role in a historical play. In delivery of the symbolic meaning of a costume, the element is color which form fastest continuous impression, and a symbolic color expression which have its allegory was able to reconfirm that it is essential to help to show the character, circumstances, and to unfold stream of a drama in the movie that is a visual medium. ; 본 연구는 에디스 워튼(Edith Wharton, 1862~1937년)의 소설인 「The Age of Innocence」를 영상화한 영화「The Age of Innocence」의 복식과 색채를 연구하고, 주인공 여성의 영화의상을 창작 디자인하는데 목적을 두었다. 연구 방법은 원작을 바탕으로 해서 문헌 자료와 영화, DVD 타이틀 등의 시각 자료를 참조하여 영상색채를 통한 이미지상징성의 표출을 고찰하였다. 워튼의 시각에서 작품을 분석하여 극의 거대한 아이러니를 해석했으며 작품의 주요 흐름을 이끌어 가는 두 여주인공인 May와 Ellen을 선정하여 도출된 인물의 캐릭터에 따른 의상 디자인을 기획하고 일러스트로 표현하였다. 그리고 두 여주인공의 눈동자 색이나 혈색, 헤어스타일 등의 인물 분위기 표현을 하기에 용이한, 신장 57cm 의 Porcelain Doll을 이용하여 머리와 의상을 디자인하고 제작, 연출하였다. 여성으로서는 처음 퓰리처상을 받은 에디스 워튼은 사실주의 작가로서 「순수의 시대」에서는 시대 변화를 대표하는 격인 두 여주인공을 등장시켜 순수 의 표리를 상징적으로 전개함에 있어서, 대조적인 의상 스타일과 색채의 표현으로 각각의 이미지를 형상화시켰다. 두 여주인공 중 May는 순수의 아이러니 를, Ellen는 절대적 순수 를 나타내었다. May는 순수 의 표면적 이미지를 상징적으로 표현하여, 흰 의상을 입고 백합과 흰 장갑을 착용하며 밝은 햇살을 배경으로 했다. 반면, Ellen은 내면과 겉모습이 일치함을 보이며, 열정을 상징하는 불꽃, 빨간색 의상 등과 같은 붉은 색과, 풍성한 아름다움을 상징하는 노란 장미, 풍요롭고 신비스러움을 상징하는 황금빛이 함께 등장하여 이미지를 형상화시켰다. 두 여주인공의 이미지를 영화로 재현시 마틴 스콜세지(Martin Scorsese, 1942년~) 감독은 영화의 초점을 잔인함 에 두고 있는 만큼 May와 Ellen의 실체는 가볍게 표현했다. May를 표현해낼 때 백합을 안개꽃으로 대치하고, 그녀의 크고 시원시원한 여장부 같은 이미지를 바꾸어 작고 귀여운 이미지로 연출하고 있다. 또한 Ellen은 지적인 갈색 눈, 갈색 머리가 아닌 서양의 백치미의 상징인 금발에 푸른 눈으로 표현되고 있어, 여성적인 아름다움을 부각시키고 있다. 이 작품으로 아카데미 영화의상상을 수상한 디자이너 가브리엘라 페스쿠치(Gabriella Pescucci, 1957년~)는 영화 상영 당시인 1990년대 초, 극에 달하는 미니멀리즘 사조의 감각을 영화의상에 도입하여, 단일색조의 조합, 소재 사용의 절제성, 축소된 스커트의 부풀림 등, 1870년대 초반 여성복식에 비하여 비교적 단순하고 간결하게 의상을 표현해내었다. 또한 흰의상으로 순수 의 표면 이미지를 표현해내었고, 짙은 회색 등이 가미된 어두운 색조로는 순수 의 속성 이미지를, 붉은 범주의 의상으로 열정을, 보라색으로는 위엄을 상징하는 등 인물들의 의상색에 상징성을 부여하여 영화작품의 주제나 등장인물의 취미, 성격 등 인물들간의 관계를 나타내는데 큰 역할을 하고 효과를 발휘하여 영화의 완성도에 기여하였으며, 의상스타일의 표현 예술성 또한 인정받았다. 본 연구에서는 작품의 주제격인 순수 의 아이러니를 콘셉트로 설정하여 May와 Ellen이 각각 표방하는 순수 를 분석 후 이를 의상 이미지로 도출해내었다. May는 젊음을 상징하기 위한 녹색 범주의 색에 순수 이면의 죽어가는 듯한 잿빛을 가미하여 짙은 청록색을 의상의 주요 바탕 색상으로 하면서, 순수 의 표면적 이미지인 흰색을 포인트로 하였다. 그리고 위엄과 점잖은 보수적인 성향을 표현하기 위해 최신 유행을 따르지 않는, 크리놀린의 잔재가 남아있는 하이버슬 실루엣 라인으로 디자인하였다. 반면, Ellen의 의상은 열정을 상징하는 붉은 색 범주에, 원작에서 사용된, 특이한 성향을 표현해내는 검정색을 혼합한 암적색으로 표현했다. 그리고 내면과 겉모습이 일치하는 솔직함과 동시에 순수의 시대 에서 두드러질 수 있는 특유의 매혹적인 이미지와 관능적인 이미지를 위해 가슴의 윗부분과 어깨를 노출시키는 May보다 유행이 앞선 버슬 실루엣 라인으로 디자인하였다. 소재는 상류층의 이미지를 표현해낼 수 있고, 또한 1870년대에 유행한 소재인 새틴을 선정하여 의상을 제작하였다. 작품이 인형 의상인 만큼 실제 인간의 의상연출과 비교시, 가벼운 느낌을 주며, 부자재 범주의 한계로 인해 제작의 한계성이 있었음을 밝혀둔다.
