This thesis investigates the emergence of human images conjunct with technology in the modern art of the twentieth century. Experiencing unprecedented advancement in science, human life, both body and mind, became inseparable from technology. In this study, the machine-man and cyborg imageries in the twentieth century are analyzed to provide their sociopolitical implicationon the notion of human being. Previous studies were limited to formalistic critique, failing to appreciate the historical and cultural significance of these discourses. Studies on cyborg arts, for example, took only the viewpoint of grotesque body aesthetics. This study starts from noting that an integrated notion on human images combined with machine is missing and proposes an approach with differentiation between (i) machine-man image formed based on a humanistic point of view and (ii) cyborg image built on the idea of a posthuman. In the early twentieth century, the machine-man image originated from the scientism which had enormous influence on the western culture with rapid expansion of industry. The ability of machines was absorbed into human being with a humanistic belief of human superiority, producing a machine-man equipped with both reason and power. Proposed as an ideal body, machine-man is an expression of confidence in the human reason which will control body without fallacy. It also shows artists' desire to build a utopia purely based on reason. On the other hand, other-machine-man image, which is often dreadful and monstrous, is the icon of masculinist culture which turns the threats to patriarchy into totemic taboos and tries to incapacitate the negative aspects of machines such as error and uncontrollability. This ambivalent response to machines both praise and rejection reflects the wonder at the enormous power and progress promised in them and the fear of being slaved to the machine civilization. Finally, the fear from uncontrollable machines was solved by transferring error and uncontrollability of machines into humanity. The image of the cyborg was proposed as a posthuman in the late twentieth century. This is an icon of modern scientific culture. The cyborg image is a hybrid of machine and organism, which breeds a hybridized and nomadic identity rejecting the concept of ego that is built on the superiority of reason as in the western patriarchal system. Now, technology not only contributes to build a new human image but also participates in deconstructing the myth of human purity as an active and independent element. Artists like Orlan, Robert Longo, and Lee Bul present the cyborg bodies in which females, non-westerners, monstrously malformed, and animals are mutually combined without boundaries, forming conflictual coexistence. This is consistent with Donna Haraway's concept of a hybrid cyborg accepting others. Also, it is related to the concept of "abject"as Julia Kristeva argues that the cyborg can not be categorized in any way. Artists like Lee Bontecou, Stelarc, and Mariko Mori propose cyborg images as overcoming the social oppression on the conventional concept of body and expanding over the unlimited computer network. In their works, cyborgs transcend the closedness of body and the neurons are connected to the cyberspace in computer to spoil the notion of human as a static and unified entity. They describe cyborgs as evolved species which escaped the present pains via cyberspace. These cyborg images can be produced only by highlytechnological power and the corresponding capital of society. The cyborg, as a modern technocrat's icon, is inextricably linked to the principle of capitalism. Thus, it is an alternative to conventional mainstream culture, but is still in the boundary of capitalism. In summary, the machine-man image is a closed and static human image based on humanistic values and the cyborg image is a hybridity of body and mind which is capable of deconstructing and reassembling. The machine-man image reflects the western patriarchal culture in the early twentieth century which has built human image based on the humanistic belief on reason. The cyborg image in the late twentieth century can be interpreted as a posthumanistic view on human being that deconstructs the hierarchy of humanistic value system. This thesis is expected to serve as a new approach to discover various discourses around the relationship between machine and human and to assess the characteristics and limitations of each human image reflected in artistic works.;본 논문은 현대 미술에 등장한 테크놀로지(technology)와 결합된 인간 이미지에 대하여 연구한다.
