Abstract
This study is intended to bring forward some problems in the movement of erasing the Korean 'pro-Japanese' in terms of women studies, and to discuss on the identities and resistances of the Korean woman intellects during the period of colony. First of all, the crucial point that this study criticize is the viewpoint of the movement activists who converged various identities of Koreans into a unilateral and hierarchical discourse, regarded "women" as a trivial and secondary concept. With the concept of "the Korean people," analyses should be focused on experiences of the nation, not those of women: as there is no alternative frame which accounts for 'the pro-Japanese' activities by some Korean intellectual women during the reign of the Japanese empire, most of their activities have been judged by the viewpoint of "the nation," so their identities as women cannot be considered. Therefore, this study focuses on the viewpoint of women in the explanation of some women’s activities in the colony: experiences of two Korean intellectual women, Helen Kim and Induk Pahk, are analyzed both for the new categorization of their activities, and for the new approach over the restricted explanations in the fields of Christianity, nation and education. Below are the findings about the two women from this study. Firstly, their experiences of modern education were a blend of new social standings: women missionaries from the western countries who wanted to propagate Christian-style lives to Korean pagan women; Christian nationalists who intended to realize the modernization of Korea with the support of the religion. In the process, however the Korean Christianity demanded contradictory behaviors to women: they should hold the identity as women that eagerly serve and dedicate themselves to their communities with the internalization of hereditary morals and rules they should also keep the qualification as modernized citizens that can express themselves to others. These dual and discrepant demands were from the conflict of western hegemony and Christian social discourses in evangelism. These inconsistent educational experiences of the two women in Korea drove them to be in the convoluted positions mixed with colonial oppressions, westernization, modernization, the nation, and the Japanese empire. Secondly, Christianity was substantial power for the two women to realize modernized lives as women. The lives of their mothers as Christians were, for them, exemplified models that released women from the patriarchism, thus they thought of Christianity as not just a religion but as the foundation of emancipation from the past. Through these perceptions, they related their involved social issues with religious experiences, which were a procedure to establish their identities as women in their realities. Thirdly, as intellectual women in the colony, they should take their space by the negotiations with patriarchism, colonialism, and western powers. They were signified as "women" in the society of the patriarchic Christian intellects, and they could be included in the realm only by supporting the recognitions of the intellects without deviation from the traditional femininity. In addition, in the mainstream of Japanese cultures, those who inherited western cultures from the USA were viewed as marginal beings in the colonized Korea, and simultaneously they were both cooperative and resistant objects for Americans. In these environments, positions of the two women could be neither stable nor secured, thus they negotiated with Korean Christian communities, American Christian associations, and the male intellects in order to keep their safe positions and benefits of women communities. Fourthly, they strived to promote the status of women and the possibilities of women’s self-reliance in the 1930s of Korea. As Helen Kim endeavored after the rise of women’s social status on the base of realization, Induk Pahk insisted on the need of social support for the ideal economical independence of women. They participated in the movement of enlightenments for agricultural residents that was led by Christian nationalist associations. Pahk joined it to rear women’s vocational careers, but Kim approached it as a way of national movements. However, they were common in the ways to make an individual a modernized identity by the spirit and knowledge: both of them, as educated women, contrived to make women awaken so as to overcome the patriarchical relationships between women and men. Finally, for Kim and Pahk, 'the support' to the Japanese empire was from the multilateral procedures with resistance and negotiation in the changing environments of the society, not from the conversion of their thoughts. They were in conflicts between western imperialism and the relationships with western women associations. They were always aware that they were in the peripheral positions from the patriarchic male intellects and colonialism. They were in concert with Japanese women associations as to support the movement for the innovation of colonial Korea by Japanese women, but they included their opinions in such movements. Through those participations, they gained their social spaces and expanded women educations in the colonial society.;본 연구는 현재 한국 사회에서 ‘친일 청산’이 제기되는 방식과 시각을 여성주의 입장에서 문제 제기하고, 식민지 여성 지식인의 저항과 주체성을 새롭게 논하고자 하였다.
