Abstract
Paul Hindemith is the most figurative composer of Neoclassicism in 20th century. He refused to follow Romantic tradition. but rather pursued pre-romantic ideals for his music and rebuilt tradition tonality through his critical response to the earlier tradition based on reader response theory. Although he followed conventional counterpoint and polyphony, he accomplished his unique melodic. formal, and rhythmic change in his composition. His foremost use of contrapuntal polyphony is well represented in 'Ludus Tonalis', in which he translated Baroque fugal and contrapuntal style based on major, minor tonality into a modern style on his own way of composition. With his free uses of 12 tones of chromatic scale in tonal structure, he creates his new composition theory of chromatic scale of 12 semitones based on overtone-series. Especially, 'Ludus Tonalis' shows the influence of traditional style which consists of a prelude and a postlude, 12 fugues each in a different tonality, and 11 interludes linking the others. 'Ludus Tonalis' will be discussed as his major composition to explain his use of interval and chord in his unique tonality which transfer and also connects earlier traditional styles to new creational styles of Neoclassicism of four basic melodies which are original, inversion retrograde and retrograde-inversion, and the relationship between subject and answer in composition. Analysis of 'Ludus tonalis' in depth will show the connection between pre-romanticism and neoclassicism in composition of Hindemith`s and significance of his work in Neoclassicism
