Benjamin Britten의 <Les Illuminations>연구

Abstract

본 논문은 연구자의 석사학위 졸업 연주 작품 중 하나인 벤자민 브리튼(Benjamin Britten, 1913-1976)의 연가곡 「Les Illuminations(광명)」에 관한 분석 연구이다. 연구의 목적은 브리튼이 활동했던 당시의 시대적 배경과 음악적 흐름을 알아보고 시대적 상황을 바탕으로 브리튼의 생애와 음악적 성장과정을 짚어본 뒤, 그의 대표적 가곡집 중 하나인 「Les Illuminations」를 연구하여 그 특징들을 살펴봄으로써 이 작품을 이해하고 연주하는 데에 도움을 주는 것이며 더 나아가 브리튼 가곡의 특징을 알아보고자 함이다. 브리튼은 20세기 영국을 대표하는 뛰어난 작곡가이자 피아니스트, 지휘자로써 교향악 작품, 실내악 작품을 포함한 모든 장르에 명작을 남긴 음악가이다. 하지만 110여곡에 달하는 전 작품 중 약 80여 작품이 성악음악이라는 사실에서도 알 수 있듯이 브리튼의 성악음악에 대한 관심과 애착을 특별한 것이었고 따라서 브리튼은 오페라, 가곡과 같은 성악음악분야에 빛나는 업적을 남기게 된다. 본 논문에서는 그의 가곡 중 초기 작품에 속하는 연가곡 「Les Illuminations」(1939)를 분석할 것이며 본 작품이 탄생할 수 있도록 브리튼에게 영감을 준 랭보(Arthur Rimbaud, 1854-1891)의 시에 관한 연구가 이에 선행될 것이다. 브리튼은 매우 탁월한 문학적 소양을 지니고 있었으며 자신의 모국어인 영어 뿐 만 아니라 ,독어, 프랑스어, 이탈리아어, 러시아어 등과 같은 다른 나라의 언어에 관한 감각도 뛰어났다. 자신의 문학적 소양과 언어적 감각을 바탕으로 하여 가곡 작곡에 있어 시를 매우 중요한 요소로 생각하였던 브리튼은 시가 갖는 언어적 뉘앙스와 시적인 표현, 묘사에 많은 중점을 두었다. 연가곡「Les Illuminations」는 브리튼이 택한 8편의 시가 들어있는 랭보의 시집 Les Illuminations와 동일한 제목을 부친 것으로, 랭보의 시에 관한 이해는 시를 중요시 했던 브리튼의 음악을 이해하고 연주하기 위해 필수적이다. 이에 연구자는 랭보 시의 배경과 일반적 특징을 알아본 후 브리튼의 음악을 분석할 것이며 「Les Illuminations」의 각 곡을 분석하기 이전에 각 시에 관한 언급을 통해 음악에 관한 이해를 돕고자 한다. 본 논문에서는 「Les Illuminations」분석을 위해 Boosey & Hawkes에서 1940년 출판된 Songs(High voice) with string orchestra scores를 사용하였다.;The subject thesis concerns Benjamin Britten (1913-1976)'s song cycle 「Les Illuminations」, one of the works performed at the researcher's recital for a master's degree. The objective is first to refer to the musical trends in Britten's times. Building on them, the study chronicles the composer's life and looks into the progress of his music. Then, it aims to present 「Les Illuminations」's features to help readers understand and perform the pieces, Britten's representative work. Ultimately, it is intended to figure out the overall characteristics of the artist's lieder. As a great composer, pianist and conductor to represent the twentieth century Britain, Britten left behind masterpieces in all genres including symphony and chamber music. Yet, he was particularly interested in vocal music as noted in the fact that 80 out of his entire 110 works were vocal music. In this sense, it is not surprising to find his most brilliant achievements in vocal music such as lied and opera. The study analyzes Britten's early music 「Les Illuminations」(1939) after exploring Arthur Rimbaud (1854-1891)'s poetry that inspired it. Britten had the talent in literature and good command of German, French, Italian and Russian, let alone his mother tongue English. He firmly believed in poems' central role in composing lieder so took extra consideration about their linguistic nuance, expression or description. 「Les Illuminations」was named after Rimbaud's Les Illuminations that contains 8 poems of Britten's choice. In order to fully understand and better perform Britten's music, the strong grasp of Rimbaud's poetry is essential. In this light, it was natural for the researcher to study the backgrounds of Rimbaud's works and their general traits before analyzing Britten's music. Also in the thesis, the researcher puts the explanation of each poem in 「Les Illuminations」before the analysis of the song cycle's each piece.
