Abstract
The Cosmic Ray Energetics And Mass (CREAM) is a balloon-borne experiment to investigate the composition and energy spectra of cosmic rays at energies up to 1000TeV (=10^(15)eV) with a series of Ultra Long Duration Balloon (ULDB) flights. It is designed to measure cosmic ray elemental spectra to help understand the source and acceleration mechanisms of ultra-high-energy cosmic rays. The charges (Z) of incident particles are identified with both a Timing Charge Detector (TCD) and a Silicon Charge Detector (SCD). Energy measurements are made with both a sampling tungsten/scintillating-fiber calorimeter for Z ≥ 1 particles and a Transition Radiation Detector (TRD) for Z > 3. The first flight in Antarctica took place from Dec. 16 2004 to Jan. 27 2005 for about 42 days. The three circumnavigations around the South Pole broke the duration and distance records for a Long Duration Balloon (LDB) flight. Sensor and electronics developed by our colleagues for SCD were tested at Ewha laboratory [20], [22]. After a full integration at NASA-WFF (Wallops Flight Faculty), signal transmission among the detectors and the status of SCD were checked in order to prepare for the experiment at Antarctica. During the flight the instruments were monitored and controlled from the Science Operation Center (SOC) at the University of Maryland (UMD) through telemetry provided by NASA. In this thesis, the SCD installed for the dedicated charge measurement of primary cosmic rays, which consists of 2912 pixel silicon sensors, and the readout electronics with wide dynamic range for charge detection from Z=1 (Proton) up to Z=26 (Iron) would be presented in detail. In addition to the construction and test of SCD, data analysis from the flight monitoring including operator’s task during the flight also would be introduced.;CREAM은 1000TeV까지의 우주선의 구성과 에너지 스펙트럼을 조사하는 ULDB를 이용한 풍선 실험이다.
