도시소설과 『시스터 캐리』

Abstract

본 논문은 드라이저의 『시스터 캐리』에 나타난 도시의 특징을 살펴보고 개인의 성격과 운명에 도시가 어떠한 영향을 끼치는가를 분석하여 도시소설로서의 작품의 특징을 고찰하고자 한다. 19세기 산업화로 발달된 미국의 도시는 강한 매력과 흥분을 자아내는 장소인 동시에 극심한 빈부의 차, 이질적인 사람들의 구성, 물질주의, 소외, 그리고 계급투쟁과 같은 해결하기 힘든 문제들을 함께 안고 있는 공간이 되었다. 인간의 삶을 지배하는 도시와 그 도시가 빚어내는 문제들에 대해 작가들은 더 이상 초연할 수가 없었다. 그들은 도시란 과연 무엇이며 도시는 인간에게 어떤 의미를 갖고 있는가 하는 것에 주목하기 시작하였으며 도시와 인간존재의 상호관련성을 밝히려고 시도하였다. 이러한 배경에서 도시소설이 출현하게 된다. 드라이저의『시스터 캐리』는 미성숙하고 어린 캐리가 도시에 와서 살며 그 삶의 경험으로 도시의 삶의 특성과 그 실제를 발견해 가는 과정을 통해 도시가 개인의 운명에 끼치는 영향을 드러낸 도시소설이다. 이러한 맥락에 따라 서장인 1장에서는 도시소설이 출현할 수 있었던 19세기 미국 도시의 모습을 간략하게 살펴보고, 도시소설의 개념과 특징을 정리해본다. 본론 1장에서는 『시스터 캐리』에 나타난 도시의 특징을 살펴본다. 드라이저는 인간의 삶을 지배하는 도시란 과연 무엇인가를 시골에서 온 미성숙하고 어린 캐리의 도시체험을 통해 드러내고 있다. 도시로 온 캐리가 그녀의 삶의 목표와 방향을 정하는데 있어서 도시가 하는 역할은 무엇인지 살핀다. 또한 도시에서 가지고 있는 직업이 삶의 방식과 인간관계를 형성하는데 있어서 어떻게 영향을 미치고 있는지 살펴보도록 한다. 본론 2장에서는 개인의 성격과 운명에 도시가 어떠한 영향을 끼치는지를 뉴욕에서의 허스트우드의 몰락과 캐리의 성공하는 과정을 통해 살펴본다. 드라이저는 인간의 삶을 지배하는 도시에서 과연 개인은 주체적인 존재로 남아있을 수 있는가 하는 의문을 던지고 캐리와 허스트우드의 삶을 통해 답하고자 한다. 4달러 50센트만 들고 도시에 온 캐리는 주급 150달러를 받는 성공한 배우로서 도시에 거주하는 도시생활자로 자기 자신을 재창조한다. 그러나 그녀는 성공했지만 외롭고 공허함을 느낀다. 그녀의 성공의 공허함과 외로움의 원인을 살핀다. 뉴욕에서 허스트우드는 점진적으로 몰락하여 마침내는 자살한다. 그러나 그는 꺾이지 않는 자존심을 지니고 있다. 드라이저는 도시가 압도적인 힘으로 인간을 축소시켜버리지만 그럼에도 불구하고 인간으로서의 본질적인 위엄과 가치를 지니고 있음을 보여주고 있다. 그러나 작가는 도시에서는 성공해도 공허하고 외로울 수밖에 없는 모습을 보여줌으로써 도시의 파괴적이고 부정적인 측면을 드러내어 도시를 비판하고 있다.;This Thesis is a study of Dreiser's Sister Carrie as a city novel. It examines the characteristics of the big city as portrayed in Sister Carrie and analyses what influence the city has on a person's character and fate. The American city, which developed during the nation's industrialization in the 19th century, was a place with many attractions and excitement, and yet also a place with many problems which were difficult to overcome, such as the gap between the rich and the poor, a heterogeneous population, materialism, alienation and class struggles. Writers could not remain indifferent to the big city which was dominating people's lives, and the problems arising from it. And so they started to take more interest in the city and what it meant to people, and set out to determine the correlation between the city and human existence. It is in this context that the city novel makes its entrance. Dreiser's Sister Carrie is a city novel that portrays how the city can change a person's destiny through the journey that a young and innocent Carrie takes as she experiences city life and discovers the reality of living in a city. The prefatory chapter one of this paper looks at the American city in the 19th century, which is the background for the advent of the city novel, and defines the concept of the city novel. In chapter one of the main section, the paper looks at the characteristics of the city as portrayed in Sister Carrie. Through a young and innocent country girl's experiences in the city, Dreiser reveals the true face of the city that dominates people's lives. The paper examines what role the city plays in Carrie setting her goals and direction in life. It also examines how a job in the city affects one's lifestyle and relationships with other people. In chapter two of the main section, the paper examines how the city can change a person's character and fate through Hurstwood's downfall and Carrie's success in New York. Dreiser questions whether a person can remain in control of one's own life in the city which dominates people's lives, and attempts to give an answer through Carrie and Hurstwood's lives. Carrie, who came to the city with just US$ 4.50 becomes a successful actress earning US$ 150 per week, and reinvents herself as a city person. But despite her stardom, Carrie feels lonely and empty inside. The paper examines the reason for her emptiness and loneliness behind her success. In New York, Hurstwood slowly descends into a bottomless pit and eventually commits suicide. However he never loses his self-respect. Dreiser shows that although the city, with its overwhelming power, can reduce a person to a pitiful existence, man can still manage to keep one's dignity and worth as a human being. But the author condemns the city by revealing its destructive and negative side through the portrayal of the loneliness and emptiness that inevitably follows success in the city.
