Abstract
This study was performed to investigate the effect of dried powders and juice powders of garlic flesh on body weight and lipid metabolism in induced obese 9-month-old rats. Sixty male rats(Sprague-Dawley) of nine months and weighing 620.0±8.7g were raised for one month with high fat diet(40% fat as calorie) to induce obesity. After induction of obesity, rats weighing 744.51±11.38g were blocked into five groups according to body weight and raised for eight weeks with control diet and experimental diet containing 3%(w/w), 5%(w/w) dried powder of garlic flesh and juice powder of garlic flesh from equal amount of garlic of making dried powder of garlic flesh. Each of dried powder and juice powder of garlic flesh was analyzed to determine the amount of total dietary fibers. Food intake and body weight gain were recorded for experimental period and perirenal fat pad, epididymal fat pad and brown adipose tissue were weighed. Plasma aspartate aminotransferase(AST) and alanine aminotransferase(ALT) activities were measured to examine the safety of experimental compound in rats and plasma total protein and albumin levels were analyzed to determine the protein nutritional state of rats. And in order to examine the change of lipid metabolism, total lipid, triglyceride, total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol and HDL-cholesterol concentrations in plasma, total lipid, triglyceride, total cholesterol levels and diacylglycerol acyltransferase(DGAT) and acyl coA oxidase(ACO), activities in liver and total lipid, triglyceride, total cholesterol excretions in feces were measured. Total dietary fiber contents were higher dried powder of garlic flesh than juice powder of garlic flesh. Dried powder and juice powder of garlic flesh contain more soluble fiber than insoluble fiber. Plasma AST and ALT activities were in safe levels (AST: 39~262 IU/L, ALT: 20~60 IU/L) and plasma total protein and albumin levels were in normal levels (total protein: 5.9~7.9g/dl, albumin: 2.8~4.4g/dl). Daily food intake and calorie intake were significantly lower in 5% dried powder of garlic flesh among all experimental groups. Body weight gain was the highest in control groups, 3% and 5% dried powder of garlic flesh groups were weight reduction. 5% dried powder of garlic flesh group was significantly more weight reduction than 3% dried powder of garlic flesh group. And body weight gain and calorie efficiency ratio (weight gain(g)/calorie intake(100kcal))were in following order: 5% dried powder of garlic flesh group <3% dried powder of garlic flesh group <5% juice powder of garlic flesh group <3% juice powder of garlic flesh group
