Benjamin Britten의 오페라 「Peter Grimes」에 관한 연구

Abstract

Edward Benjamin Britten(1913-1976)은 Henry Purcell(1659-1695) 이후 침체되어있던 영국의 음악을 부활시키는데 큰 역할을 한 작곡가로서, 「Peter Grimes (피터 그라임스)」를 시작으로 「Death in Venice (베니스에서의 죽음)」까지 총 14곡의 오페라를 작곡하였다. Gustav Mahler(1860-1911), Alban Berg(1885-1935), Igor Stravinsky(1882-1971)와 같은 유럽 여러 작곡가들의 영향을 받아들인 Britten은 20세기 오페라사의 한 부분을 차지한다. 영국 음악의 부활과 자신이 오페라 작곡가로서 인정을 받는 데에 결정적인 역할을 한 그의 오페라 「Peter Grimes (피터 그라임스)」는 런던의 초연에서 대성공을 거두었고 여러 나라들의 주목을 받기 시작하였다. 이렇게 함으로써 Britten은 고립되어 있었던 영국 음악의 역사에 한 획을 그었을 뿐만 아니라, 영국 작곡가의 작품들도 다른 여러 나라의 대작들과 함께 어깨를 나란히 할 수 있음을 증명하였다. 「Peter Grimes (피터 그라임스)」는 대규모의 오페라로써 Britten의 특징적인 작풍들이 한데 모인 작품이다. 그의 삶의 배경이었던 바다가 이 오페라의 배경이 되었고, 그가 추구하던 반사회적인 반전주의와 동성애적인 경향은 오페라에서 사회와 개인이 대립하는 구조를 형성하였다. 이러한 대립은 복조성과 다변하는 조성으로 표현되었다. 두드러지지는 않지만 꾸준히 등장하는 지속음을 사용함으로써, 그리고 주된 화음과 몇몇의 테마를 전 막에 걸쳐 여러 형태로 반복시키는 수법을 사용함으로써 그의 경제적인 표현력을 보여주었다. 또한 Lydian선법, 영국 민요적인 선율 그리고 영국식 영어의 억양을 잘 나타낸 레치타티보와 아리오조를 통하여 지극히 영국적인 면을 보여주었다. 인물과 분위기를 음악적으로 묘사함에 있어 타고난 재능을 가진 그는 각 장의 시작에 앞서 Interlude를 삽입함으로써 극의 분위기와 주인공의 심리를 나타내었고, 주인공 외에 다른 인물들의 특징적인 모습이나 성격 또한 음악적으로 잘 표현하였다. 마지막으로, 이 오페라의 앙상블은 각 인물들이 다른 부분에 등장하여 서로 다른 가사의 선율을 노래하도록 작곡된 Verdi의 스타일을 종종 따랐고, 오페라의 숨겨진 주역이라 할 수 있는 합창은 때로는 조심스럽고 때로는 거리낌 없이 부르짖으며 고함소리를 냄으로써 강한 인상을 주었다. 낭만주의적 사실주의를 비롯한 유럽 음악의 전통과 영국 음악의 특징을 조합하여 만든 자신만의 작풍을 바탕으로 하여, 20세기 음악의 특징인 실험적 정신을 오페라에 반영함으로써 다양한 모습을 보여준 작곡가 Britten은 「Peter Grimes(피터 그라임스)」를 통하여 자신이 20세기를 대표할 만한 영국 작곡가임을 확실히 보여주었다.;Edward Benjamin Britten(1913-1976) was a composer who played a major role in revitalizing British music which had been in stagnation since Purcell's period. Beginning with 「Peter Grimes」 to 「Death in Venice」, Britten had composed 14 operas. Britten, who was influenced by other European composers such as Mahler, Berg, and Stravinsky, occupied a significant portion in the opera history of the 20th century. 「Peter Grimes」 was the first opera that played a significant role of reviving British music in essence and also qualifying Britten as an opera composer. At the first performance in London, 「Peter Grimes」 achieved a huge success and attracted many other nations' attention. With great success of 「Peter Grimes」, Britten not only made a significant landmark of the British music history but also proved the excellence of the British composer’s work even comparing to the great works of the world while British music was isolated from the rest of the world. 「Peter Grimes」 is a grand scale opera, which integrated Britten’s unique style towards his works. Britten's hometown by the sea became the background of the opera, and his antiwar, anti-societal, and a tendency of homosexuality made a structure of society and individual to become antagonistic to each other in 「Peter Grimes」. This conflict between individual and society is presented by bitonality and various modulations. Furthermore, The succession of pedal point which persist throughout each of the section is a simple but wonderfully effective generator of tension. Some themes that consist of two or three bars develope properly as characters' emotion or atmosphere of the drama changes. Britten also demonstrated native British music by using Lydian mode, English folk melodies, and recitative, which are expressed British accent very well. Britten, who was talented in describing personality and atmosphere by music, provided "Interlude" in the beginning of each scene to introduce each chapter's ambiance and main character's state of mind. Furthermore, Britten also expressed other characters' unique appearances and personalities with his music alone. Finally, Britten followed Verdian style when composing an ensemble and his chorus, which played hidden leading role for the opera, made a strong impression on audience because it sometimes made reticent voice and sometimes made imprudent yelling and shouting when reaching a climax. Britten, demonstrated various aspects of his work reflecting both experimental approach of 20th century music and his own style made from the combination of romantic realism of traditional European music and unique characteristics of British music, proved himself to be one of the greatest composers of the 20th century as a British through 「Peter Grimes」.
