한국전통음악 선율의 시각 표현 연구

Abstract

Traditions refer to the culture of a people that has been preserved and developed based on the long spirit of the history and recreated through ongoing efforts. The current elements defining a people or a nation are thus highly affected by traditions. Korea has created its own unique Korean culture based on the solid traditions, which have been kept despite the many foreign influences throughout history. Thus it’s important to understand and discover the traditions first in order to create a Korean formative work based on the Korean culture. The Korean traditional music has been formed being influenced from the ideology and culture. The traditional thoughts of Korea are based on the spirit of Hongik Human appearing in ancient Chosun. The thoughts of tastes, which have served as the foundation of Korea’s unique musical ideas, and the imported Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism worked together to create the aesthetic ideas of the traditional Korean music. The cultural backgrounds of the traditional Korean music were under huge influences of Korea’s geography and geopolitics. Being imported from China and further India, musical instruments were selected, recreated, and refined to fit the unique ideas of the Koreans based on a critical attitude. One good example is Geomungo. The musical pieces were also written according to the musical grammars that were Koreanized. At the same time, folk music was developed very actively to reflect the local feature even more clearly. Since the Koreans are one people and use one language, their music has unique rhythm differentiated from other peoples’ music. The beats, which are one of the unique musical elements of Korea, are based on three beats, which differs from adjacent China and Japan. They are useful to make colorful and dynamic melodies and write free music with a strong reflection of the writer’s personality. In the late Chosun Dynasty the court music was spread among the common people. The mixture of the elements of the court music and folk music gave birth to an original musical form, which was Pansori, which then led to the birth of Sanjo. Accordingly, Sanjo contains the spirits and forms of the Korean music and the characteristics of the upper class culture and folk culture altogether. In other words, it’s one of the representative music genres of Korea to express the traditional music visually. This study began under the subject of “Visual expressions of the traditional Korean melodies” to discover the Korean ways of expressions. Gayageum Sanjo was chosen for the study as it was one of the most popular traditional Korean music genres and was played by the investigator for years. First the background that had important impacts on the creation of the traditional Korean music was examined. Based on the theoretical background and the appreciation of Gayageum Sanjo works that the investigator had playing them, the possibility of expressing the traditional Korean visually was investigated. In the process of the creation, the investigator realized you needed both the understanding of the traditional music and first-hand experiences of it to express the traditional Korean melodies effectively. The most effects were the abstract expressions of the internal and external character of the traditional music. The study has limitations in that it is hard to claim for objectiveness and universality since the understanding, interpretations, and expressions were all derived from one person, the investigator. The traditional Korean music is one of the cultural heritages with the most original character and reflects the characteristics of Korea’s religions, ideas, environments, and language that were parts of the traditional Korean culture. With deeper understanding and more research and expressive methods on them, it will be easier to discover formative elements for the traditional culture and Korean expressions.;전통은 역사를 걸쳐 내려온 유구한 정신을 바탕으로 끊임 없이 재창조되어 민족의 문화의 보존과 발달을 이루는 것을 말한다. 따라서 현재 나타나는 민족적, 국가적인 요소에는 전통의 영향이 크게 작용하기 마련이다. 우리 나라는 지난 역사 동안 끊임 없는 외세의 영향이 있었음에도 굳건한 전통을 바탕으로 우리나라 특유의, 한국적이라 할 수 있는 문화가 형성되어 있다. 따라서 현재의 한국 문화를 살피고 이를 바탕으로 한국적인 조형 작품을 만들어 내기 위해서는 전통에 대한 이해와 발견이 우선시 되어야 한다. 한국의 전통 음악은 크게 사상적, 문화적 부분에서 영향을 받아 형성되었다. 한국 전통의 사상은 고조선 시대 나타난 홍익인간 정신을 바탕으로 전개되었으며 이후 발생한 우리 고유의 음악적 사상의 기반인 풍류사상과 외국에서 유입된 유, 불, 선 사상이 우리 나라 전통 음악의 미학 사상의 바탕이 되었다. 한국 전통 음악 형성의 문화적 배경에는 한국의 지형과 지정학적 위치가 크게 작용하였다. 악기는 대부분 중국을 통해 인도 등 각지의 악기가 수입되었으나 비판적 수용 자세로 우리 풍토에 맞는 악기를 선별해서 수입하거나, 재 창조하였는데 대표적인 예가 거문고이다. 악곡 또한 한국화된 음악 어법에 맞게 작곡되었고, 민간 차원의 민속음악도 활발하게 만들어졌는데 민속악은 지방색이 특히 잘 드러났다. 음악이 언어 형식에 큰 영향을 받기 때문에 단일 민족이면서 독자적인 단일어를 쓰고 있는 우리 음악은 역시 타 문화권과 구별되는 강약구조를 가지고 있다. 우리 나라 전통음악은 장단이라는 독특한 형식의 음악 요소로 구성되어 있는데 인접한 중국, 일본과 달리 3분박 구조를 가지고 있어 다채롭고 역동적인 선율의 음악을 만들어 낼 수 있었다. 이로 인해 개성을 살린 자유로운 음악이 나타났다. 조선 후기를 거치면서 정악이 민간에 퍼지면서 정악이 갖는 요소와 속악의 요소가 더해져 판소리와 같은 독창적인 음악 형식이 나타났고 판소리의 영향으로 산조가 발생하였다. 그런 이유로 산조는 한국 음악 전반에 내재되어 있는 정신과 형식, 상류사회 문화와 민속 문화의 특징을 모두 가지고 있어 한국 전통 음악을 시각 표현 할 수 있는 대표적인 음악 형식 중 하나라고 할 수 있다. 이에 본 연구자는 한국적 표현 방식의 발견을 위해 “한국 전통음악 선율의 시각 표현”이라는 논제 아래 연구를 시작하였고, 현재 남아 있는 다수의 한국 전통음악 종류 중에 가장 널리 연주되는 음악이며 본 연구자가 수 년간 연주해 보았던 가야금 산조를 중심으로 작품을 진행하였다 작품 전개를 위해 본 연구자는 먼저 한국의 전통음악 형성에 중요한 영향을 끼친 배경에 대하여 연구했고, 이와 같은 이론적인 배경과 본 연구자가 실재 연주하면서 갖고 있었던 가야금 산조에 대한 감상을 바탕으로 한국 전통음악을 시각적 이미지로서의 표현하는 방법의 가능성을 제시해보았다. 작품 전개과정에서 한국 전통 음악 선율을 효과적으로 표현하기 위해서는 전통 음악에 대한 이해와 실재 경험 모두 필요하다는 것을 깨달았고, 전통 음악이 갖는 내재적, 외형적 성격으로 추상적 표현이 가장 효과적이었다. 반면 전통 음악에 대한 이해와 해석, 그리고 표현 모두 본 연구자에 국한 되었다는 점에서 객관성이나 보편성을 지니기에 어려우며 이 점이 본 연구의 한계이다. 그러나 우리나라 전통음악은 가장 독자적인 특징을 가진 전통 문화 중 하나이며 그 자체에도 한국 전통 문화인 종교, 사상, 환경적, 언어적 특징이 반영되어 형성된 것 이기 때문에 이에 대한 깊은 이해와 연구, 표현 방법에 대한 제시가 많아진다면 한국 전통음악, 혹은 더 나아가 전통 문화와 한국적 표현을 위한 조형요소의 발견에 도움을 줄 수 있을 것이다.
