Abstract
Concepts of fraction are one of the important mathematical concepts to be taught in school mathematics. Nevertheless, students cannot rightly understand the concepts, because fraction is a complex concept to contain a lot of subordinate concepts. The most important reason to make understanding of fraction difficult, however, is because a faction class tends to be centered on symbol and algorithmic calculation to be alienated from reality. Pointing out problems of the fraction class to be separated from everyday life, many researchers argued that the class should use the actual situation occurring in our life. Irwin(2001) remarked that informal knowledge based on students' experience was 'everyday knowledge,' and knowledge to be taught is 'scientific knowledge.' He highlighted that the fraction class should connected with everyday life for comprehensive understanding of mathematics. Although Irwin(2001) considered ultimate purpose of mathematics education to learn 'scientific knowledge,' he insisted that integration of scientific and everyday knowledge was important. In oder to consolidate the integration, the problems which make possible to apply abundant everyday knowledge or the problems which contain familiar context to students should be presented(Irwin, 2001). The part of the fraction class is largely divided into concepts and operation of fraction. Particularly, in fractional operations, students's study is inclined to a symbol and algorithmic calculation without comprehension of the meaning of fraction. Accordingly, this research was purposed to acknowledge the problem of the fraction class in school mathematics and necessity of the class connected with everyday life. This study also investigated the effect of the appropriate contextual problem which was applied to students' activity in fractional operations learning. For this reason, following research questions were drawn. RQ 1. This study looks for the difference of achievement between two groups which perform the contextual and noncontextual problems in fractional operation learning. In learning of contextual and noncontextual problems respectively, this study investigates the difference between higher and lower ranked groups. RQ 1-1. In the 'creating arithmetic sentence problem' section of fractional operation learning, is there difference of achievement between two groups which perform the contextual and noncontextual problems? Is there difference between higher and lower ranked groups in the contextual and noncontextual problems learning respectively? RQ 1-2. In the 'making formula' section of fractional operation learning, is there difference of achievement between two groups which perform the contextual and noncontextual problems? Is there difference between higher and lower ranked groups in the contextual and noncontextual problems learning respectively? RQ 1-3. In the 'calculation' section of fractional operation learning, is there difference of achievement between two groups which perform the contextual and noncontextual problems? Is there difference between higher and lower ranked groups in the contextual and noncontextual problems learning respectively? RQ 2. How do students apply everyday knowledge to fractional operation learning? RQ 3. What is the type of students' dialogue connected with integration of everyday knowledge and scientific knowledge in fractional operation learning? In order to conduct this study, the author selected 16 students who passed the fraction concept test among the sixth grade students at K elementary school in Seoul. Those students have already completed the curriculum of fractional concept and operation units. After the regular class, dividing the students into two groups, the researcher and a class teacher performed one intervention to give contextual problem and the other intervention to give noncontextual problem respectively. The experiment has been making over three weeks from December 17, 2004. The unit of 'fractional operation' was used for this experiment. For the experimental intervention of this study, two groups were given different types of problems (i.e., contextual and noncontextual problems) so that pairs of students solve the given problems on the worksheet through their discussion and cooperation. For pretest and posttest, this research conducted the achievement test of fractional operation learning. The students' dialogue and worksheet to record the process of problem solving was used for qualitative analysis data. The results of this research are followed. First, the analysis of the achievement test showed that contextual problem learning was more effective than noncontextual problem learning in improving the fractional operation ability. In particular, this effectiveness is more in lower ranked group than in higher ranked group. For the analysis of 'creating arithmetic sentence problem,' 'making formula' and 'calculation' in the subordinate areas of fractional operation test, significant difference between before and after the intervention was found only in the area of 'creating arithmetic sentence problem.' Second, students' worksheet and dialogue to record the problem solving process told that the students applied their everyday knowledge to problem solving (i.e., drawing a picture or creating arithmetic sentence problem) after solving the problem through the method based on the algorism. Third, when analyzing students' dialogue and worksheet in the aspects of application of everyday knowledge, five types are drawn: 1) the type that the dialogue is not smoothly proceeded and higher ranked student has the initiative to solve the problem, 2) the type that the dialogue is smoothly advanced but lower ranked student mainly listens to the higher ranked students' explanation and agrees to them. In this type, higher ranked student still leads the problem solving. 3) mutual independent relationship that one student gives consequence to calculation in problem solving process and the other student to everyday knowledge. In this relationship, two students' approaches are not shared. 4) mutual cooperation relationship that one student gives consequence to calculation in problem solving process and the other student to everyday knowledge, but two students' approaches are shared through discussion between them, and 5) the type that discussion between two students is actively performed and all of higher and lower ranked students solve the problem by applying everyday knowledge. When examining the dialogue types in aspect of integration of everyday knowledge and scientific knowledge, higher ranked student leads the conversation in types 1 and 2. At these types, it is not easy to keep the balance of dialogue between two students so that lower ranked student's chance to use their own everyday knowledge is rarely given. It means that there is little possibility to integrate everyday knowledge and scientific knowledge. Type 3 shows that the dialogue does not drawn by one person and two students' main method to solve the problem is not shared. It implies that integration of everyday and scientific knowledge does not tend to be completed. In addition, types 4 and 5 presents that everyday knowledge and scientific knowledge are appropriately integrated. Based on the results of this study, three points would be suggested for future research. First, in the experimental class of this research, even if students applied everyday knowledge such as drawing a picture or creating arithmetic sentence problem to the problem solution, the most familiar method to the students is algorism centered solution. It is because the subjects of this study are in the sixth grade of elementary school. They have already finished the formal class about fractional operation. In order to comprehensively understand the meaning of operation or algorism prior to learning algorithmic mathematics, it is recommended to introduce the class to use the contextual problem and to improve students' comprehension of the meaning before a symbol. If so, it would be helpful to increase students' understanding of fractional operation. Second, the experimental class was conducted under the process that pairs of students found the solution of the problem by discussing each other. However, this form of problem solving tends to mislead accurate concepts of fractional operation if two students fail to get a right answer to the given questions. Therefore, it is necessary for teachers to administer students' discussion during the process of problem solving. Finally, this research was designed to improve symbol manipulation not accompanying understanding of the meaning and to induce students to apply their everyday knowledge to the problem solving process by presenting contextual problem for fractional operation education connected with everyday life. In order to organize contextual problem so that students could apply everyday knowledge, it is necessary to understand mathematical concepts and to carefully study students' reality.
