We studied the interaction of optical waves with three-dimensional (3D) spatially symmetric materials such as those that are spatially periodic and others that are chiral symmetric. As an example of spatially periodic materials, we fabricated 3D colloidal photonic crystals from polystyrene nanospheres. A scanning electron microscopy image of a fabricated sample shows a well-defined, face-centered cubic crystal structure. The optical transmission and reflection spectra of the fabricated sample were theoretically simulated by using a scalar wave approximation to obtain the diameter of the spheres and the number of layers, needed to agree with the experimental structure parameters. Next, the role of a strong dye absorption in determining the photonic band gap shape of a dyed 3D photonic crystal, fabricated from dyed polystyrene nanospheres, was etermined. When the dye absorption peaks fall on the spectral position of the photonic band gap, the latter takes on a distorted shape, narrow at the top and wide at the bottom. Theoretical analysis shows that the characteristic band gap shape results from two superimposed contributions of distinct origin, i.e. a Bragg reflection and a high reflection associated with strong dye absorption. Also, we investigated the liquid crystal alignment on photonic crystal films fabricated by a self-assembly method. In doing so, we successfully demonstrated the fabrication of two liquid crystal devices by using photonic crystal films to construct twisted-nematic devices and a liquid crystalline Fabry-Perot cavity in the spectral range of a Bragg reflection band of photonic crystals. By adopting classical models of molecular chirality in a chiral bio-polymeric film, the contributions of the coupled-oscillator and helix natures to the chiral surface second-order susceptibilities were identified through the introduction of a molecular orientational distribution. Experimentally, surface orientational distribution functions at interfaces of a chiral chitosan polymer film were determined from a second harmonic generation measurement. The largest chiral component of surface nonlinear optical susceptibility was from an electric-magnetic coupling with a dominant ontribution from the helix nature of the chitosan. Next, in a chiral bent-core liquid crystal system, we successfully analyzed the second harmonic generation of the B4 phase of a mixture of achiral bent-core molecules and achiral rod-like molecules. As a definite model of the B4 phase in the mixture, the existence of a twist-grain-boundary structure with its helical axis along the bent direction was proven. From the theoretical analysis of second harmonic generation data, it was further shown that the macroscopic chirality of the bent-core molecular system could be controlled by introducing an achiral rod-like molecule.-
