Abstract
In this thesis, the tiger paintings since the Northern Sung Dynasty are taken as objects. Focusing on the 'Ch'u-shan hu(出山虎)' and the 'Tso-hu(坐虎)', they are examined in terms of the meanings of the icon and form and style of the paintings throughout Korea, China and Japan. The 'Ch'u-shan hu', which means a tiger appeared from a mountain, has aspects of dynamic and strong images of tiger as a beast that frightens men and other animals. And these aspects laid a tiger as a subject of elimination and comprehension so a tiger became as a symbol of a good government. As a king of animals, a tiger is also presented as a meaning of a dignified being. In the 'Tso-hu', a sit tiger is represented as a being of commanding presence which he arouses respects and also as an auspicious being with transcendental power along with dragons. As considerations on the other objects in the screen, the pine trees, usually painted in the background with meanings of wise and firm hero, shows a countenance of a tiger, king of all. And the pine trees were also used as a symbol of dragons that a dragon often referred to an old pine tree as a metaphor. The bamboo, often appeared in the background as well as pine trees, 'the paintings of tiger and bamboo' could be approached in the context of Buddhist painting and being analysed as containing the meanings of the place of meditation or spiritual awakening. And, in Japan, there is an old saying that "to set a tiger free in the bamboo forest"which means letting someone of overwhelming influence to perform in full. In this case, 'the bamboo forest' means the space that a tiger can act with its free will. For the birds that are frequently drawn with tigers, especially the terrified ones that crying out and flying up, there can be found the close relationship with the 'Ch'u-shan hu'. This marriage of the tiger and the bird motif seems to have appeared in the Northern Sung Dynasty at latest. And the bird motif, as dramatic elements, elevates the atmosphere of the work in responses between the objects and gives the movement on the picture so that it ultimately arouses the poetic effect to the viewer. In the Chinese tiger painting, examined on the 'Ch'u-shan hu' and the 'Tso-hu', the 'Ch'u-shan hu' seems to be accomplished by Chao Miao-ch'o(趙邈齪), the best tiger painter from the Northern Sung Dynasty. In the works attributed to him, by the tiger's side part of the body, the turned around head shown about 7th of, the raised tail and waking towards with it's front leg crossed, it shows a typical representation of Chao's 'Ch'u-shan hu'. This typical feature can be identified in the various works that are painted later. It is examined, as often, with some transformations such as widened legs in the form of '八' or gathered. The 'Tso-hu', attributed to Mu Ch'i(牧谿), is regarded as the best. In the works, with three patterns of the sit tiger, it is shown some transformations mainly according to the locations or conditions of the head. The existing works show that the transformations in the 'Ch'u-shan hu' and the 'Tso-hu' completed in the Ming Dynasty at latest and accomplished as main icons. In the Qing Dynasty, there doesn't seem to be much change on the tiger icon itself. However, the tiger paintings by various characteristic artists including the Yangzhou School(揚州畵派) often show some original postures or compositions with the way of the icon has been dealt with traditionally. And the distinct change can be seen in terms of the composition of the picture by omission of the background elements. The tiger paintings in Korea, with the reception of the Ming's style in the early Chosun Dynasty, there are common elements of the tiger icon as of those in the 'Ch'u-shan hu' and the 'Tso-hu'. As in the late Chosun, although the paintings don't show great changes in comparison with the earlier period, it is recognizable that they have the icon of the 'Ch'u-shan hu' and the manner of academic style. For the icon of the 'Tso-hu', it tends to be identified in the folk paintings. Over the whole history of painting, with the appearance of the painters such as "Kim Hong-do"and by the productions with higher realism thorough the detailed sketch, the increase in quantity of paintings and the improvements in quality opened another dimension to the tiger painting. Also, in the late Chosun, a tendency of simplified background is recognizable as this stands out in the folk paintings. In Japan, it was the Muromachi period that the tiger became one object for animal and bird paintings. The drawing of bamboo and tiger in ink-monochrome which is influenced by Mu Ch'i are passed down by many artists. The tiger with intensive decorations and saturated colours appeared later throughout the Azuchimomoyama and Edo period. The figures are applied in various ways as well as the 'Ch'u-shan hu'. Taking the portrait of 'Ch'u-shan hu' with the bamboo forest background, the tiger, being interpreted as a bellicose beast, was preferred as a symbol of a commander. Along the rising trend of the new painting, the tiger drawing engages with the transfiguration as the 18th century began that is to be the realistic sketch style mainly led by Maruyama School(円山派). It is presumed that, based on the established figure, it was applied with the experiences from the real animals. And the lifelike sketch for the hairs which was accessible adds to the reality, yet, it was not based on the real observation. So, in spite of the original experiments, there is a limitation in terms of description of the body structure that brings to the contradiction.;본 논문에서는 중세적 감상화로서의 호랑이 그림을 연구대상으로 하여 出山虎와 坐虎를 중심으로 그 도상적 의미와 현존작을 통해 중국·한국·일본에서의 전개양상을 살펴보았다.
