Abstract
This thesis aims to give a critical review of some analyses of passive/unaccusative expletive constructions and to propose a new syntactic analysis. For this purpose, I start the discussion by giving a brief overview of passive/unaccusative expletive constructions and characterizing them in terms of the phonological analysis and syntactic analysis respectively. Chomsky’s (2001a) TH/EX analysis is representative of the phonological analysis. Chomsky (2001a) proposes that arguments in passive/unaccusative expletive constructions can be displaced by an phonological operation called TH/EX. On the other hand, the following analyses are representative of the syntactic analysis: Radford’s (2000) in-situ analysis/existential analysis, Julien ’s (2002) passive verb head analysis/clause-final subject construction analysis and Lasnik’s (1999) partitive case analysis. The syntactic analysis opposes Chomsky’s (2001a) phonological analysis and treats the movement of arguments in passive/unaccusative expletive constructions as truly syntactic operations. Comparing the two analyses (phonological analysis and syntactic analysis), the syntactic analysis provides a straightforward account for the problems posed by phonological analysis. On this basis, I believe that the syntactic analysis gives a more explicit account with respect to passive/unaccusative expletive constructions. And this thesis proposes a new syntactic analysis to deal with passive/unaccusative expletive constructions. Two main assumptions adopted in this thesis are as follows: i) the expletive which bears a D-feature attracts an N-feature (Chomsky 1995b:364), and ii) T is weak in English. According to the proposal of this thesis, N-to-Expletive feature raising is through the medium of T. Since T in English is hypothesized to be weak, an associate NP must move out of VP. Thus, the extracted argument can be moved to the [Spec, VP] or adjoined to the VP.
