Abstract
This study focuses on the lives of Koyro women based on 49 epitaphs. During the Koryo Dynasty, a period when works of female writers were blossoming, inscriptions were widely practiced. Only high-class women with a noble title were allowed to perform inscriptions. During this year, a woman's status was established according to the rank of her husband or son. In Chapter Ⅱ, the differences between the inscriptions dedicated to women and men is examined. The inscriptions were analyzed based on the subject women's experiences and the people surrounding them. During the Koryo Dynasty, women were able to socialize with people and were entitled to perform various roles throughout their marriage. Therefore, a woman's marriage was greatly emphasized in an inscription, and the life of a woman is divided into two parts: life before marriage and after marriage. In the case of a man, more emphasis was placed on his social status and power, since it was considered very important for a man to hold a good governmental position and leave a good name and reputation to his descendants. However, in the case of a woman, the relationship between her and her children was considered to be much more important. Chapter Ⅲ focuses on how the descriptions of inscriptions vary according to the relationship between the deceased and the person who wrote it. Women are divided into different categories as a wife, a teacher's wife, an acquaintance's wife/mother, a mother-in-law and a noble lady from loyal family. Mostly, an inscription written by a husband includes quotations of the deceased's actual words and describe interesting experiences. In this case, two different sides of women are portrayed: (1) as a strong character pointing out to her husband what a subject must do for his king and advising him on how to survive in times of turbulence, and (2) as a woman trying hard to remain calm even at the brink of her own death. At the end of the Koryo Dynasty, many inscriptions on women's tombs were inscribed. In many inscriptions, life as a scholar's wife, who takes good care of all family affairs while her husband is devoted to his work and serves her husband's pupils and guests, is described in a positive light. In the case a Buddhist priest wrote an inscription for his pupil's late mother, she is described as a good educator who has raised and taught her son well. Women are described in a different tone according to the relationship between the deceased and the writer. For example, a woman can be described as the wife of a scholar portrayed by her son-in-law, or as a virtuous woman described by her family members. Women's lives are also colored in different shades: While a first wife struggles to make ends meet with her husband and family in poverty, a second wife marries into an affluent family and concentrates on bringing up the children, while practicing religious rituals. Regarding the relationship with the family, the first wife shows the sacrifice of motherhood by losing her life over the pain of losing a child, whereas the second wife is shown to strive to be fair to the children of the first wife. Mothers trying to be generous to their stepchildren also reveal the kind of motherhood expected and enforced on women during that society. In the Koryo Dynasty, a widow who stayed faithful to her late husband or a widow who raised her children by herself was highly praised. Another interesting fact is that a woman's role as a mother was described more importantly than that of a daughter-in-law. In Chapter Ⅳ, women's various roles during the period are covered. The study finds that women's roles can be divided into three categories. First and most important, as a householder who manages the domestic financial status, as men were expected to concentrate on working for the government. Second, as an educator, who raises her children well so that they may be recognized in society later on in life. Finally, as a person leaping various Buddhism rituals for the prosperities of the household. If a son should become successful in life, he would express his honor and gratitude to his mother, showing that motherly sacrifice was expected by women during that period. In Chapter Ⅴ, the study focuses on the changes in the concepts of ideal women as described in inscriptions during this period. In the beginning of the Koyro Dynasty as an aristocracy-oriented society, women were expected to manage domestic affairs and financial issues. However, as Metaphysics began to prevail later in the Koyro Dynasty by newly-educated scholars, ideal women were quickly transformed to become docile and passive. As such, the study reveals these concepts. Chapter Ⅵ deals with the historical meanings that the inscriptions hold. If literature portrays life in a dramatic form, writings in inscriptions clearly explain the way women lived during the period in a realistic manner. Thus, this can be understood as a different form of literature that describes life in a beautiful yet realistic way. Although these writings were written by men from a male perspective, they are extremely meaningful in that they are limited materials that vividly reveal the life of women during this period. The study further shows the distinctive features of Koyro women by comparing their inscriptions with those of Chosun women.
