유럽 봉건제에 관한 연구사적 검토

Abstract

The aim of this thesis is to lay the foundation for proper understanding of the so-called feudalism in western European society. Feudalism has long been considered as prerequisite for understanding of the medieval society and culture, and has been a topic of intense studies and hot debates. Feudalism is widely understood among scholars as only a concept invented by modern scholars. Unfortunately, however, failure to realize this has caused big confusion among academic world. The situation is more serious in domestic circles where newest studies on feudalism are being introduced along with out-of-date ones. Thus the systematic examination and introduction of varied and recent studies on feudalism are greatly needed. With this situation in mind I first devise a new and adequate frame in order to include recent studies which suggest to reconsider feudalism with critical attitude. Secondly, I investigate two meanings of feudalism: the one in a narrow, technical, legal sense of the word and the other in a broad sense. The former may be regarded as a body of institutions which create and regulate the obligations of obedience and military service. The latter is preferred to speak of 'feudal society' and it attachs special importance to grades of personal dependence relationship. Thirdly, this research introduces recent studies, which examine the term of feudalism with critical and negative attitudes. They point out that the term of feudalism is not adequate to describe complicated and various features of medieval society. In conclusion, this thesis attempts to introduce alternative research trends which emphasize the horizontal relationships in contrast to the vertical one in medieval political, social, and cultural life of middle ages.;본 논문은 서유럽 중세의 봉건제 혹은 봉건 사회에 대한 연구 성과들을 체계적으로 검토함으로써 중세 사회의 이해에 대한 토대를 마련하는 것을 목표로 하고 있다. 수 세기 동안 봉건제라는 개념은 서양의 중세 사회와 문화를 이해하는 핵심적인 개념으로 여겨져 왔으며, 그 관심만큼이나 치열한 탐구와 논쟁의 주제가 되어왔다. 봉건제가 중세 시대의 어휘가 아니라 근대의 학자들에 의해 만들어진 개념이라는 사실은 그것의 논의들이 지나치게 다양화되는 근본적인 원인이 되었다. 그러한 다양한 논의는 중세에 대한 편견과 오해를 불식시키고 중세 자체에 대한 심층적 이해에 기여한 것은 사실이지만, 오히려 중세에 대한 우리의 이해를 혼란스럽게 만드는 결과를 가져왔다. 특히 국내의 학계에서는 방대한 외국의 연구 성과들이 적절한 비판 없이 무분별하게 유입되면서 봉건제 개념에 대한 혼란은 가중되어 왔으며, 따라서 이 주제에 대한 조직화되고 체계화된 검토가 요구된다. 이에 본 논문에서는 봉건제 개념에 대한 반성과 비판을 제기하는 최근의 연구들까지 포괄할 수 있는 새로운 연구 틀을 설정하여 봉건제 논의의 중심이 되는 광범한 연구들을 검토하였다. 두 번째로 봉건제를 유용한 개념적 틀로 파악하는 연구들을 주군과 가신간의 상호 대등한 계약을 중시하는 ‘좁은 의미’의 봉건제와 사람들 사이에서의 지배와 종속관계에 초점을 두는 ‘넓은 의미’의 봉건제로 분류하여 검토하였다. 세 번째로는 봉건제라는 개념과 용어의 한계를 지적하거나 또는 그것의 허구성을 밝힘으로써 제한적인 개념들로 중세 사회의 복잡 다양한 모습을 보여주는 것에는 한계가 있다고 지적하는 연구들에 대하여 검토하였다. 마지막으로 결론부분에서 봉건제와 같은 수직적인 관계만을 강조할 것이 아니라 수평적인 관계들에도 주목함으로써 중세의 다양한 정치, 사회, 문화적 삶을 보여주고자 한 연구들에 대해 간단히 소개하였다. 그러나 본 연구는 봉건제 혹은 봉건 사회에 대한 새로운 견해를 제시하기보다 유럽 중세사회의 성격을 파악하기 위해 선행되어야 하는 연구에 해당한다. 중세라는 시기는 그 이전의 고대 그리고 그 이후의 근대와는 분명히 구별되는 독특하고 중요한 현상들이 존재했음은 분명하다. 본 연구가 당시 사회를 이해하기 위한 다각적인 학문으로의 접근 그리고 봉건제라는 제한적인 개념에서 더 나아가 중세 사회를 더욱 잘 보여줄 수 있는 대안을 마련하려는 노력 등 중세 유럽의 다양하고 풍부한 당시의 모습을 발견하게 되는 계기가 되기 바란다.
