부부갈등이 아동의 심리적 적응문제에 미치는 영향

Abstract

인지-맥락적 모형과 정서적 안정성 가설은 부부갈등이 아동의 심리적 적응문제에 영향을 미칠 때, 양자의 관계를 매개하는 아동의 심리 내적 매개과정을 설명하는 대표적인 이론이다. 본 연구는 부부갈등이 아동의 내재화 및 외현화 문제에 영향을 미치는 과정에서 아동의 인지-맥락적 평가와 정서적 불안정성이 매개역할을 하는지 살펴보고, 양 이론의 상대적 효율성을 비교하며 나아가 두 이론을 통합한 통합모델이 양자간의 관계를 더욱 분명히 설명하는지 밝히고자 수행되었다. 대전과 서울시내 초등학교 5학년 아동 282명(남아 130명, 여아 152명)과 그들의 부모, 교사로부터 자료를 수집하였다. 수집된 자료를 바탕으로 각 측정변수 간의 관련성을 살펴보았고, 인지-맥락적 모형과 정서적 안정성 가설의 이론모델이 적합한지 구조방정식 접근법에 근거하여 분석하였다. 또한 인지-맥락적 모형과 정서적 안정성 가설의 통합모델이 부부갈등과 아동의 심리적 적응문제의 관계를 설명하는데 더 적합할 것이라는 가정 하에 통합모델의 적합성과 매개변수들의 상대적인 영향력을 비교해보고자 한다. 연구의 결과는 다음과 같다. 본 연구의 측정변수간의 상관관계는 전반적으로 유의미하였으나, 부부갈등은 우울/불안을 제외하고 아동의 심리적 적응문제와 직접적으로 유의미한 상관관계를 보이지 않았다. 그러나 부부갈등은 갈등에 대한 아동의 인지-맥락적 평가나 정서적 안정성과 유의미한 관계를 보였으며, 아동의 인지-맥락적 평가 및 정서적 안정성은 아동의 심리적 적응문제와 유의미한 관련성을 보였다. 그래서 아동의 인지-맥락적 평가 및 정서적 안정성의 매개효과를 살펴보았다. 첫째, 갈등의 성질, 지각된 위협, 자기 비난과 같은 아동의 인지-맥락적 평가가 부부갈등과 아동의 심리적 적응문제 간의 관계를 매개하는지 살펴보았다. 그 결과 부부갈등은 아동의 인지-맥락적 평가를 통해 아동의 내재화 및 외현화 문제에 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 그리고 인지-맥락적 모형은 내재화 및 외현화 문제에 대해 각각 보통 적합도, 괜찮은 적합도를 보이므로, 아동의 인지-맥락적 평가가 부부갈등과 아동의 적응 문제 간의 관계에서 매개효과를 지닌다고 결론내릴 수 있다. 둘째, 아동의 정서적 안정성이 부부갈등과 아동의 내재화 및 외현화 문제 간의 관계를 매개하는지 살펴보고, 인지-맥락적 모형과 비교해보았다. 우선 정서적 안정성 가설의 모델이 아동의 내재화 및 외현화 문제 각각에 대해 괜찮은 적합도, 좋은 적합도를 보이므로, 부부갈등은 아동의 정서적 안정성을 매개로 하여 아동의 적응문제에 영향을 미친다고 할 수 있다. 또, 인지-맥락적 모형과 정서적 안정성 가설 중 어느 모델이 본 연구에서 수집된 자료에 적합한지를 밝히기 위해 두 이론의 적합도 지수를 비교한 결과, 정서적 안정성 가설의 이론모델이 아동의 내재화 및 외현화 문제 모두에서 자료에 더욱 적합한 것으로 나타났다. 셋째, 인지-맥락적 모형과 정서적 안정성 가설을 통합한 모델이 하나의 매개변수만을 포함한 모델보다 부부갈등과 아동의 적응문제와의 관계를 더 잘 설명하는가를 살펴본 결과, 가정했던 것과 달리 통합모델은 아동의 내재화와 외현화 문제 모두에서 나쁜 적합도를 보였다. 또, 정서적 안정성은 같은 모델 안에 인지-맥락적 평가가 포함되더라도 여전히 유의미한 매개역할을 하는 것으로 나타났으나, 아동의 인지-맥락적 평가는 외현화 문제에서는 더 이상 유의미한 매개역할을 하지 못하는 것으로 나타났다. 본 연구는 부부갈등과 아동의 심리적 적응문제의 관계에서 부정적 양육태도의 매개효과만을 주로 살펴보던 기존의 연구들과 달리, 인지-맥락적 평가 및 정서적 안정성이라는 아동의 심리 내적 매개과정을 밝혔다는데 의의가 있다. 특히 국내 연구에서 아직까지 증명되지 않았던 아동의 정서적 안정성이라는 매개과정의 중요성을 확인하였는데, 이는 부부갈등으로 인한 아동의 심리적 적응문제의 예측 및 개입에 중요한 정보를 시사해줄 수 있다. 또한 부모에게 이러한 정보를 제공하여 자녀에게 미치는 부부갈등의 영향력에 대한 통찰을 얻도록 할 수 있으며, 심각한 부부갈등을 겪고 있는 가정의 아동을 대상으로 아동의 정서 안정성을 향상시킬 수 있는 개입 프로그램을 실시할 경우 아동에게 미치는 부부갈등의 부정적인 영향력을 감소시킬 수 있다는 실천적 함의도 지니고 있다.;The cognitive-contextual framework and the emotional security hypothesis present two explanations for how interparental conflict affects child psychological adjustment. The Purpose of this study were (ⅰ) to examine the mediatiing effects of children's emotional security and cognitive-contextual appraisals on the process of marital conflict influencing children's internalizing and externalizing problems, (ⅱ) to examine simultaneously emotional security and cognitive-contextual appraisals between parental conflict and child psychological problems. The sample subjects were comprised of 282 5th grade elementary school children(130 boys and 152 girls), their parents and teachers participated in the study. The structural equation modeling was employed to demonstrate associations between the proposed mediator and the adjustment problems. The Results of the study are as follows. Intercorrelations for most variables used as indicators were statistically significant. But marital conflict failed to associate with child adjustment problems except the children's depression/anxiety. Children's emotional security and cognitive-contextual appraisals were associated significantly with marital conflicts and child adjustment problems. 1. Children's cognitive-contextual appraisals were identified as significant mediational process that link marital conflict and child adjustment problems. And the cognitive-contextual framework provided a mediocre fit(internalizing problems), reasonable fit(externalizing problems). 2. Children's emotional security was identified as significant mediational process that link marital conflict and child adjustment problems.. The emotional security hypothesis provided a reasonable fit(internalizing problems), close fit(externalizing problems), and the emotional security hypothesis was fit to this data. 3. The integrated model, it integrated the emotional security hypothesis and the cognitive-contextual framework, provided unacceptable fit(internalizing problems, externalizing problems). In support of the emotional security hypothesis, the results indicated that child emotional security was a important mediational process even when children's cognitive-contextual appraisals were considered in the same models. But in children's externalizing problems, cognitive-contextual appraisals were not singnificant. This study confirmed that mediating effects of children's emotional security and cognitive-contextual appraisals on the process of marital conflict influencing children's internalizing and externalizing problems. And this study will provide children and parents with information that marital conflict, children's emotional security, and adjustment problems are interrelated, and that emotional security is key mediational process.
