Abstract
The purpose of this study is to understand how children experience the mathematical activities at block play in kindergarten. by means of ethnographic study. The researcher intends to analyze aspects of block plays of 5 year old children at Garam kindergarten, contents of mathematical activities they experience by menas of such plays and factors influencing on the mathematical activities experienced at the plays. To meet the above purpose, three questions have been set up as follows. 1. How is the aspect of the Haetsal Class children' participation in block plays? 2. How do the children experience mathematical activities at the block plays? 3. What are the factors influencing on their mathematical activities at the block plays? This study was carries out in a class of five-year old children, within a Garam kindergarten located in Seoul. The subiect were twenty children and one teacher. Data wre collected through twenty three participating observations, two teacher-interview by inquiry during a period from August 16, 2004 to October 1, 2004. 1.2004 Data were collected field jotting, audio-tape recording, documental collection, and photographing. The content of field jotting and recording were transcribed in field notes, and the contens of interview were duplicated and materialzed. Whild collecting the data, analytical notes about the data were written. After the collection was completed, full-scale analysis and interpretation were carried out. The cases were coded, categorized and analyzed according to Bodgan & Biklen(1992)'s methodology. The results are as follows: First, the children have experienced mathematical activities at all areas of the block play during the playing time. Just as the block plays start from planing and end by arrangement, the mathematical activities they experience during the plays were made from planning to the ending time for arrangement. In addition, among types of plays, not only composition plays but also functional and imaginative plays were helpful for the children to experience mathematical activities. Second, the children have experienced various mathematical concept during the block plays. They did classification activities by means of complex and various grouping during previous and afterward activities for making a structure. By ordering blocks, they could put proper length blocks at proper space effectively and by recognizing the applicable order, they did ordering activities by menas of determining the order. Various situations of the block plays enabled them to use numbers in various ways. And they could experience the whole and parts in the course of block and breaking-down blocks and sharing toys with peers in various styles. While making houses with proper width using blocks for the block plays, children experienced measurement such as weight, width, length and etc. In addition, while building-up space with blocks, looking for shapes of the block figures, and examining the third dimension space from various angles, they could experience figures and geometries naturally. As they became accustomed to the plays, they could compose balanced and beautiful structures, using patterns. Third, in the building-up plays, characteristic of playing objects, subject of plays, gender, peers' participation and teachers' intervention were factors influencing on the children' mathematical activities. Because blocks themselves are composed mathematically, they did the role to stimulate children to have various mathematical experiences. Depending on the subject of plays selected using such objects for plays, children become to experience other types of math. activities, which influences on the types of math activities they experience. The third factor was gender. According to gender, there was difference in frequency of participation in the building-up plays, structure composing time, and the preferred play subject. And such difference gave direct and indirect influence on children' math. activities. When peers participated in such individual play, the play became extended and deepened. Accordingly, children could experience more various math. activities than those of sole plays. Furthermore, while having mutual reactions with peers, children could have opportunities to use mathematical language. Finally, various intervention of teachers helped children' plays to continue and enabled various math. activities. Thereby, teachers' intervention became a factor enabling children to study mathematical contents systematically, otherwise they could experience them just by chance.
