<報恩奇遇錄>의 구성과 갈등구조 연구

Abstract

본 논문은 작자 미상의 국문 필사본인 <報恩奇遇錄>을 고찰하기 위해서 시도되었다. 몰락한 양반의 가문 회복과 여성들의 다양한 관심사를 다루고 있는 <보은기우록>은 구조나 창작 방식, 주제 의식이 여타의 장편가문소설과는 매우 다른 독특한 작품이라 할 수 있다. <보은기우록>은 후편인 <明行貞義錄>에 대한 당대 문헌들의 기록들을 통해 18세기 말엽에서 19세기 초엽에 창작된 작품으로 상층 부녀자들에게는 물론 세책을 통하여 서민들에게도 읽힌 작품으로 보인다. <보은기우록>은 조선후기 유교적 윤리관의 붕괴와 더불어 사회·경제적으로 격변하는 현실을 보여주고 있다. 본 작품은 財貨의 문제를 전면에 부각시키고, 부친을 적극적인 상행위를 도모하는 인물로, 아들을 유교적 보수주의에 얽매인 인물로 설정하였다. 이러한 파격적인 구성은 독자들에게 낯설게 하기를 통한 신선함을 줄 수 있지만 동시에 거부감을 줄 수 있다. 이를 완화하기 위해 작가는 익숙한 순임금 고사를 구조적으로 수용하고 있다. 또한 2세대 인물들이 報恩을 통한 相生 구조 속에서 부부의 노력으로 가문 회복을 성취하게 하고 있다. <보은기우록>은 서술기법에 있어서도 독특한 형태를 보여주고 있다. 시정세태를 적극적으로 보여주며, 극대화된 대화체를 사용하고, 다종다양한 삽입 문형들을 활용하고 있다. <보은기우록>은 이념에 경도된 나머지 현실적 욕망을 발현하는 것을 부정했던 가치관을 비판하고 새로운 시대의 합리적이고 조화로운 가치관을 제시하고자 한다. 재화의 추구를 놓고 벌어진 부자 갈등은 과거 합격을 통해 立身揚名을 이루는 가운데 해소되지만 명분으로의 입신양명만이 아닌 부가가치로 따라오는 재화에 관심을 두고 있어 실리적인 관점에서 입신양명을 바라보게 하고 있다. 동시에 재화를 멀리하던 위연청이 윤리적인 재화 사용을 보여주고 있어 올바른 재화 추구의 방법을 도모하도록 하였다. 절대 윤리와 현실 논리가 대치되는 가운데 발생하는 부녀 갈등은 절대적인 윤리관에 대해 상대적인 시각을 가지게 하는 동시에 知己之友의 부부 관계를 형성하게 해주는 동인이 되어주고 있다. 여성 인물들로 인해 벌어진 애정 갈등은 권위적인 가부장제와 정절이데올로기로 인해 억압 받던 여성들의 삶을 비판하고 주체적 의지에 따른 애정 추구와 다정다감한 부부 관계에 대한 욕망을 보여주고 있어 다양한 층위의 여성들의 관심사를 보여주었다고 할 수 있다. <보은기우록>은 이념에만 경도되어 현실을 명분 논리로 풀어나가는 것을 거부하고 있다. 이는 재화에 대한 현실 인식과 여성 인식에서 두드러지게 나타난다. 조선후기는 자본주의의 맹아기로서 농업 사회에서 상업 사회로의 변모의 시초를 보이면서 신분제의 혼란을 가져왔던 격변기였다. <보은기우록>의 작가는 경제력으로 인한 신분제의 동요를 사실적으로 반영하는 가운데 재화의 올바른 사용을 모색하고 있다. 이러한 현실 인식은 여성 인식에도 작용하고 있다. 권위적인 남편에게 종속되어 婦德을 강요받고 당연하게 체화하는 아내상이 아닌 信義를 바탕으로 서로가 서로에게 힘이 되어주면서 문제들을 함께 해결해나가는 知己之友의 부부 관계를 작가는 보여주고 있다. 이러한 부부 관계는 여성을 남성에게 종속된 존재로 인식하고 있는 것이 아니라 남성과 동등하게 바라보고 더 나아가 인간 평등으로 이어지게 하고 있다. 또한 節을 절대적인 가치로 평가하기 보다는 상대적으로 해석해내면서 주체적인 판단에 의해 자신의 삶을 개척해 나가는 여성들에게 긍정적인 시선을 보내고 있다. <보은기우록>은 이상과 현실의 합일이 더 이상 불가능한 세계에 지향해야 할 새로운 시대의 합리적인 가치관을 모색하고 있다. 명분과 관념이 중시되던 주자학적 가치관을 벗어나 주체적으로 자신의 삶을 개척해 나가는 인물들을 통해 근대지향적인 모습을 보여주고 있는 것이다. 이는 <보은기우록>이 17세기 말부터 시작된 장편가문소설 중에서 후대에 산출된 작품으로 18세기 재화에 대한 현실 논리를 보여주고 있는 문화 영역의 영향을 받으면서 벌열 가문의 가문의식을 종통과 혼인을 중심으로 풀어가던 장편가문소설에서 변모를 추구한 것으로 여겨진다. 본 작품을 통해 상층 벌열 가문의 보수적 이념을 대표하는 것으로 인식되던 장편가문소설이 변별되는 지점들이 있어 획일화 될 수 없음을 짐작할 수 있었다. 상층의 보수적 의식을 강하게 드러내는 작품들뿐만 아니라 <보은기우록>처럼 진보적이며 현실적인 성향의 작품들도 존재하고 있는 것이다. 본 작품은 조선후기 대거 창작된 장편가문소설의 발전과 변모 양상을 밝힐 수 있는 중요한 지도리로 작용할 것이다.;This study presents results of a consideration of <Boeungiurok>(報恩奇遇錄), which is a Korean manuscript whose author has not been known. Covering the themes of collapsed noblemen's recovering their families' glory and women's diverse subjects of interest, it is differentiated from other long family novels in terms of structure, creative method, and awareness of theme. Estimated to have been written in the late 18th century or in the early 19th century, the distinguished novel was loved by not only the women in the upper class but also by the common people throughout the book lending practice. What it presents, among many things, is the rapidly changing reality of the times both in socially and economically along with the fall of the Confucian ethics. The author picked a man that was active in commercial acts for the father character and a man that was devoted to Confucian conservatism for the son character. Recognizing that the breakthrough composition could be resisted by the readers at the same time it exposed them to fresh defamiliarization, the author adopted the stories of Shun that were familiar with people in the structural aspects for the buffer zone effect. Such efforts can also be found in the characters of the second generation, who worked hard to recover their families' lost glory by requiting others' kindness and promoting mutual survival. The area the novel is also differentiated from other family novels is the unique narrative techniques, which include active acceptance of the civic affairs, maximized conversations, and insertions of many kinds and forms. In the <Boeungiurok>, the author criticizes the value that denied the burgeoning of realistic desires under the powerful governance of ideology and suggests a new value that would fit for a new era being rational and harmonious. The conflicts between the father and the son on the matter of pursuing wealth are resolved in the process their seeking fortune and gaining fame. What the author focuses on telling the story is, however, the wealth itself observed from a practical perspective. In addition, the author shows how wealth can be sought right with the character named Wi Yeon-cheong, who adopts desirable ethics in pursuing and using wealth. The conflicts between man and woman enable the readers to have relative perspectives on the absolute ethics and shed light to the relations between the husband and wife, who are supposed to be appreciative friends for each other. The author depicts the affective conflicts of the female characters to criticize the patriarchal ideology of fidelity forced upon suppressed women and to suggest women's pursuit of their affective emotions according to their own will and the husband and wife relations based on mutual trust and love. That's why the novel is considered to contain a variety of interest of women from many different classes. The novel also reflects the social and economic aspects of late Chosun, when the cracking Confucian ethics began to give way to the newly rising realization of the times. The author has a sharp eye to notice the shattering of the status system due to the changing dynamics in economy and reveals his or her strong objection to the patriarchal system where women are subject to men. Thus it was the characters with will and ability to take actions being faithful to their human emotions and active in making things happen rather than notional and typical characters that show the changing era in the novel. In telling the stories involved with shattering status system due to the changing dynamics in economy in late Chosun, the author shows the ways to make right use of wealth and presents commercial activities from a positive viewpoint. He or she doesn't stand by the absolute universalism from the Middle Age but emphasizes the practical, rational, and modern values along with the husband and wife relations based on mutual trust. According to his or her, women are not subordinate to men and have as great abilities as men based on the human equality idea. In the relative interpretations of taking a bow, the author takes a positive attitude toward women that pioneer their lives following their independent decisions. In the times when integration of ideal and reality no longer is a possibility, the author searches for a new rational sense of value for the new era. The characters that escape from the Neo-Confucianism whose focus is on duty and obligation and lead their lives independently are the epitome of modern figures. The long family novels started in the late 17th century, and <Boeungiurok> belongs to the latter days in the novels' history and thus is affected by the cultural trends in the 18th century when wealth was important. Unlike its predecessors that used family lineage and marriage in insisting on the value of distinguished families' consciousness, the novel takes a different route to the theme and further a different theme. Thus the coexistence of such family novels that are distinctive of the upper class's conservative ideas and the ones that are progressive and realistic is thus proved. <Boeungiurok> is a critical tool to investigate the growth and change of the long family novels that prospered in late Chosun.
