손소희 소설의 결말구조 연구

Abstract

본 연구는 손소희 소설의 대부분을 차지하는 애정 갈등형 소설의 분석을 통하여 손소희 소설의 결말구조의 원리와 의미를 살펴보는 것을 목적으로 삼는다. 손소희 애정 갈등형 소설이 일괄적으로 보이는 결말의 전환 형식에 중점을 두는 분석의 방법을 선택하여, 문학사 상에서 소외되어 오던 손소희 문학에 대한 새로운 접근(이전의 다른 작가와 시기 별로 묶여서 여성주의적인 관점에서 분석과 달리)을 시도하고자 하는 것이다. 손소희 소설이 다루고 있는 전후시기의 한국 사회는 격동기였다. 전쟁의 참화로 인해 정치적으로 불안정하고, 경제적으로 빈곤했으며, 사회적으로는 이산 가족으로 인해 상실감이 팽배하여 도덕적 붕괴를 가져오던 시기였다. 문화적으로는 민중의 실상을 정면에서 파고들기보다는 현실을 잊게 하는 낭만적인 문물들이 성행하였다. 이 시기 문학에서는 이전의 해방공간에서 성행했던 두 부류인 사회소설과 페미니즘 소설이 침체기에 접어들고, 성이나 사랑의 기존 윤리를 이탈하고, 낭만적 사랑의 환상에 탐익을 보이는 형태의 소설들이 등장하였다. 손소희의 소설 또한 이 시기의 여성소설들과 같은 소재를 다루고 있다. 그러나 밖을 여성의 공간으로 지정하고 윤리를 이탈하고 가정을 벗어나는 시작부와 달리 결말부에서 이전의 전통적 인물의 유형으로 회귀하는 특징을 보인다. 이 점이 다른 작가들과 손소희를 함께 다루는 이전의 논의에서 지적될 수 없었던 부분이다. 이에 대해 본 연구는 결말에서의 전환되는 주제의 형태를 전환 결말이라고 정의하고, 이를 두드러지게 보여주는 인물, 공간을 통한 전환 양상 고찰과 플롯을 통한 서두와 결말부의 연결 양상을 고찰하는 방법을 도출하였다. 인물에서는 서두에서 제시되어 있던 인물의 고정된 성격이 결말부에서 변화되었다는 점에서 평면성을 탈피하고 입체성을 드러내고 있다고 보았다. 여성인물의 경우 진취적이고 적극적인 현대적 여성이 결말부에 가서 순종적인 전통적 여성으로 변화되는 것이다. 남성인물의 경우도 소극적이고 유약한 의존적 남성이 결말부에 가서 적극적 행동의 남성으로 변화되는 것이다. 이를 각각 분석함으로 인물의 대응이 서두와 결말에서 변화되는 것을 알 수 있다. 공간에서는 서두에서 추구하던 현대적인 공간이 결말부에서 전통적인 공간으로 전화되어 있다. 여성의 경우 현대적 여성을 다루고 있는 소설에서 ‘밖’공간을 추구하는 형태로 나타나듯이 서두에서는 그런 형태를 보인다. 그러나 결말부에 가서 ‘안’공간으로 회귀되는 형태를 제시한다. 남성의 경우 여성으로 인해 ‘밖’공간을 빼앗긴 형태로 ‘안’공간에 머물러 있지만 결말부에 가서 ‘밖’공간으로 이동하는 형태를 보인다. 이런 전환의 양상은 플롯 분석에서 구조적인 특징을 드러낸다. 서두에서 결말로 변환되는 과정에 폭로라는 매개적인 상황이 존재함을 알 수 있다. 폭로의 과정을 거침으로 자신이 추구하던 기대와 현실의 상황이 일치하고 있지 않다는 인지가 일어나고, 이로인해 결말부에서 전환이 이루어지는 것이다. 이는 각각 여성의 경우 폭로의 상황을 운명으로 받아들여 현실에 안주하는 형태가 나타난다. 남성의 경우 폭로의 상황으로 인해 여성과의 의존적인 관계가 끊어진 것을 알게 된다. 이로 신념을 상실하는 자포자기한 대응을 보이고 있음을 알 수 있다. 즉 남성 인물의 전환은 적극성을 띠고는 있지만 긍정적인 대응으로 보기는 어렵다. 이상의 과정을 통해 손소희 애정 갈등형 소설의 결말구조가 전환 형식으로 이루어져 있음을 분석해 보았다. 이것은 다른 여성 작가의 소설에서 나타나는 기존 윤리를 파괴하고 개방된 사고를 보이는 자유로운 여성의 제시라는 점에서 그 명맥을 같이 하고는 있지만, 결말부에서 전통적인 사고로 회귀하고 있다는 점에서 변별성을 보인다. 이것은 혼란한 시기에 정치적으로 보수당이 난립했던 것과 같이 혼란상을 잠재우는 방법으로 전통으로 회귀하고자 하는 의식을 담고 있는 것으로 볼 수도 있으나 작가가 윤리를 파괴하는 자유로운 사고의 결말을 부정적으로 인식하고 있음을 또한 보여주는 것이다. 이는 낭만적인 환상을 통해 현실의 고통을 벗어나고자 하기보다는 정면으로 현실을 보여주는 것이므로 이러한 변별성을 지닌 작가의 세계관은 전후시기의 소설로서 그 의의를 가진다고 할 수 있겠다.;The purpose of the above thesis is to scruitinize Son So -Hee's novels characterized with so to say love conflict affair. In this study I tried to classify and analyze the finale pattern of her novels and pay great attention to find how the novels wind up with the story. Son So-Hee is one of those post war authors who tended to write feminism or somewhat reformation of society in the novels. Therefore, the precedent researchers, as usual, focused their study on the standpoint of feminism expressed in the novels. I tried, however, to analyze Son's novels in the way how the characteristics of heroines or heros develops in the story. The time span during which Son's love conflict novels were written can be called a turbulent era of korean society. Korea was emancipated just 10 years before the korean war broke out. The peninsula was parted into two antagonistic ideologies. Nation was then politically unstable, economically poor and socially deserted. People would consider the traditional moral and ethic no more helpful for hard life of plain people. On the streets, there were romantic culture like dance, western music and material like chewing gum, coffee and beer making people dumb like opium or alcohol. Tendency of novels of post war korean society transferred gradually to novels handling something impulsive like sex and other amusement. Readers became toxicate in liberal sex affair and more exposure of intimacy, secrete side of private rooms. In this sense, Son's novels are not different from those of her precedent colleagues. But, her novels are different from other novels. Heroins of Son's love affairs begins with coming out of home in search for liberty and goes back to the home place where they once deserted. They show, in the beginning of the story, a stern attitude against conventional, feudalistic moral of society as if they would never come back and see around. In the endings, however, they would almost without exception, find their way to their old home they once deserted. This returning to beginning point is typical in Son's novels. In this thesis, I studied the novels of Son in three parts: Person, Space and Plot. In person, a fixed character of the person showed in the phase of beginning changes almost suddenly at the end of the story. The ways of thinking and doing of women in the phase of beginning look like very reformative and modern. They, then, turn out to be tamed and conservative at the finale of the novel. Men are usually holding back at the beginning and become those who dares to do something positively and energetically. In space, modern spaces at the first phase of story become different in the way they change to traditional ones. Women pursuing outer world at the beginning of the novel tend to return to inner space which they have been traditionally forced to keep. Men, to the contrary, tend to keep the inner side of the space at first, change to those who move to outer world at the end. This typical character can be also found in plot. Stories usually wind up with sudden disclosure. Heroine or heros tend to accept the disclosed fact with the resolution. They tend to understand and consider the disclosure as their given fate. They would never try to fight against it. At least, they seem so. In male persons, the heroes acknowledge that their relationship with woman or women have been curtailed and they are not able to depend upon the women any longer. Men seem like very positive and energetic in their characteristical tunrning over, but their life style can hardly be evaluated as affirmative attitude to the world. With this study on Son's love conflict affair novels I am able to reach a humble conclusion. My first motive to scrutinize the novels of the author has been partly realized. So, it is concluded that Son's novel handled in this thesis show author's typical feature: Returning to the beginning point of person, space and plot. This feature of Son realizes us the limit of every thought, politic, art and literature of that time. We are, in fiftieth and sixtieth, could not and did not overcome the barrier of conservative and traditional moral and social worth.
