G. F. Handel의 오페라 ‘세르세’의 등장인물에 따른 아리아의 연구

Abstract

G. F. Handel(1685~1759)은 J. S. Bach와 함께 바로크 후기를 대표하는 작곡가로서 전 생애에 걸쳐 여러 곳을 여행하면서 이탈리아, 독일, 프랑스, 그리고 영국의 음악 스타일을 그의 작곡기법에 접목시켜 많은 음악을 작곡하였다. 특히, 오페라는 전체 43개의 작품으로서 헨델 자신만의 고유한 음악 스타일로 작곡되어 당시에 많은 대중들에게 인기를 얻었다. 그의 오페라 「Serse」는 헨델이 건강이 악화된 말년에 작곡한 유일한 희가극인 오페라로 당시에 유행하던 오페라 부파적인 스타일을 모방한 작품이다. 비극적인 인물과 희극적인 인물이 뒤섞인 다소 산만한 줄거리를 가지고 있어서 초연 당시엔 흥행에 실패하였다. 그러나 헨델이 자신만의 음악적인 스타일로 작곡한 각 인물의 특징있는 아리아들로 인해 후대에 와서 오페라 「Giulio Cesare」,「Rinaldo」와 함께 많이 공연되는 작품 중의 하나가 되었다. 본 논문에서는 오페라 「Serse」를 중심으로 하여 본론에서는 헨델의 생애, 그의 오페라의 음악적인 특징들, 오페라가 작곡되어진 배경, 그리고 곡의 구성과 악기의 구성, 줄거리, 각 등장인물들의 아리아들을 가사를 기본으로 하여 리듬, 화성, 선율, 템포 등의 측면에서 분석하였다. 연구 결과 각 등장인물들의 감정상태를 알 수 있었으며 결국엔 그들의 성격을 파악할 수 있었다. 희망, 행복 같은 긍정적인 단어가 올 때에는 주로 장조 분위기에, 붓점이 있는 리듬, 또는 긴 멜리스마가 붙기도 하였으며 분노나 슬픔 등의 부정적인 의미를 나타내는 단어에서는 단조 분위기에 32분음표의 빠른 장식음이 쓰이거나, 때로는 중간에 자주 전조를 해줌으로써 인물의 생각이 변하고 있음을 암시해 주기도 하였다. 결론적으로 초연 당시엔 실패했지만 후대에 와서 많은 나라에서 공연되는 작품이 될만한 요소를 지녔다는 것을 알 수 있었다.; G. F. Handel(1685~1759), as one of major figures in late baroque period along with J. S. Bach, traveled all around the world and wrote numerous pieces mixing various musical styles from Italy, Germany, France, and England. Especially, forty three operas he has written in his own style won popularity from people in his time. One of his opera, 「Serse」, the only comic opera he composed, was written in later years of his life when his health was weakened. It imitated the opera buffa that was very popular in his period. It failed to be popular the first time it was played because the story was rather vague with mixture of tragic and comic natures. But in later generation, it became one of the most frequently played pieces along with 「Giulio Cesare」and「Rinaldo」 by arias of the opera that described each character in different color in Handel's unique musical styles. In this thesis, Handel's life, the musical instruments, and stories are analyzed with the opera 「Serse」. And rhythm, harmony, melodies, and tempo are analyzed based on each character's lyrics in the opera. As a result of the research the emotional state of each character was found and this helped me understand overall characteristic of each character. The lyrics including positive words such as "hope" or "happiness" are accompanied by major keys, rhythms with dotted notes, and long melisma whereas negative words like "anger" or "sadness" came with minor keys, fast 32nd grace notes, frequent transitions to imply the change of thoughts of characters. The fact the piece holds many elements to be loved for worldly performances, although the popularity for the piece hasn't come in his time, was well understandable after the research.
