사진의 상징적 표현에 관한 고찰

Abstract

寫眞은, 1839년 발명된 이래, 새로운 영상의 재현 수단으로써 사진가의 예술적 표현도구가 되어 왔다. 19세기말 사진가들은 회화주의 사진(Pictorial Photography)의 경향을 추구하여, 사진의 기계적 기록성은 무시한 채, 자신의 의도대로 사진을 조작하여 표현하였다. 알프레드. 스티글리츠(Alfred Stieglitz)는 활발한 사진예술운동을 전개하여 미국 사진계를 발전시켰고, 사진예술의 본질이, 철저한 寫實主義의 추구에 있음을 인식하고, 대상의 객관적인 진실 파악에 노력하였다. 그의 후기 작품으로 대표되는 이퀴벌런트(Equivalent)는 일련의 구름 사진들로서, 대상의 정확한 묘사 뿐 아니라 구름을 통하여 자신의 內的인 經驗과 感情을 상징적으로 나타내고 있다. 결국 그는 이전의 사실주의를 더욱 발전시켜, 객관적인 대상에 상징적 의미를 부여함으로써 자신의 감정을 사진으로 표현하였다. 마이너. 화이트(Minor White)는 스티글리츠의 이퀴벌런트 표현 형식을 발전시켜, 더욱 深化된 상징성의 인식에 바탕을 둔 사진들을 창조하였다. 그는 종교와 철학, 동양 사상에 깊은 관심을 가지고 부단히 연구함으로써, 그의 작품 세계는 신비한 靈的인 의식세계를 근거로 隱喩的인 象徵性을 內包하고 있다. 마이너. 화이트의 사진적 표현은 매우 주관적이고 복합적이며, 자신의 내면적인 의식세계를 한층 심화된 상징적 표현으로 나타냄으로써, 독자적인 사진세계를 이룩하였다. 결국 이와같이 새롭게 전개되기 시작한 사진적 표현은, 사진이 단순히 대상을 기록하는 敍述的인 再現기능의 차원을 넘어, 보이지 않는 內面世界를 표현하는 상징적 기능을 구사함으로써, 사진예술을 思考의 도구로 昇華된 映像言語로까지 발전시켰다. ;As a new way of reappearance of an image, photograph, since it had invented in 1893, has been artistic instrument of expression. Ignoring the nature of photograph-mechanical recorder-photographers, in the late 19th century, pursued pictorial photography and expressed their inside world by manufacturing photograph on purpose. Alfred stieglitz unfolded the movement of photo art and developed the American photograph. He recognized that the substance of photo art laid on pursuing reality, so he tried to understand the subject with an objectivity. Equivalents, representing his late works, are a series of cloud photograph. He expressed his interior experience and feelings not only with an exact depiction but also symbolically by cloud. At last, he developed former realism well and expressed his feelings by endowing the object with symbolism. Developed Equivalents image, Minor White created photography based on profound recognition of symbolism. As he studied incessantly with an interests of philosophy and oriental thoughts, his arts involved metaphorical symbolism laid on mysterious consciousness. Expressions his interior unconsciousness through a profound symbolism, Minor White accomplished his own photography subjectively and complexly. Newly spreaded photographical expression played a symbolic function so that expressed sightless inner world beyond the function of descriptive depiction. At last the art of photograph has developed visual language as the tool of thoughts.
