Does Dollarization Help Women in Ecuador?

Abstract

By next January 2010, it will be 10 years since dollarization was implemented in Ecuador. At the beginning this measure was taken with the sole objective to provide economic stability to the country. However, later this new monetary system became one, if not the main center, of the most important aspects of the national economy which was surrounded by not only several internal but also external shocks that accompanied this process. This thesis, by examining the pre-dollarization and post-dollarization process, aims to analyze whether this monetary system, implemented at the beginning of 2000, has contributed to or affected women’s economic development in Ecuador. In the present study, we underline the main changes with respect to women’s participation in education, employment, earned-income and politics through time. Moreover, by comparing important indices such as the Gender Empowerment Measure and Gender-Related Development Index that allow us to understand the importance of women’s contribution for two different periods of time, this thesis evaluates women’s performance in the economic and the political areas.;2010년 1월이면 에콰도르에서 달러화가 실행 된지 10년이 된다. 처음에는 경제 안정을 도모하기 위한 목적으로 이 제도가 실행되었다. 그러나 이 후에 이 통화 시스템으로 인해 에콰도르의 경제는 내부뿐 아니라 외부의 충격에 노출되게 되었다. 이 논문은 달러화 시행 이전과 이후 과정의 분석을 통하여 200년에 시작된 이 통화 시스템이 에콰도르 여성 경제 발전에 미친 영향을 토론한다. 이 논문에서 연구의 중심은 여성의 교육, 취업, 수입, 정책 등에 관련된 주요 변화를 시기에 따라 살펴 보고 있다. 또한, 여성의 역량 지표 (Gender Empowerment Measure)와 여성 관련 개발 지표 (Gender-Related Development Index)에 상관된 여성의 성취(performance)를 두 시기로 나눠서 비교 분석한다. 이를 통해 에콰도르 인구의 반을 차지하는 여성의 경제와 정치 분야에서의 역할과 역량을 살펴 보고자 한다.
