Impact of Female Unemployment on HIV/AIDS Prevalence

Abstract

The purpose of this research was to find out if female unemployment and lack of stable adequate income plays a major role on the spread of HIV/AIDS among women living in urban areas of LDCs like Dar-es Salaam city in Tanzania. Through literature review it was established that; little work has been done on the connection between female unemployment and high rate of HIV/AIDS infection among women living in urban areas of LDCs. These studies show that HIV/AIDS is a gendered disease associated with poverty and affects more women than men. In addition to the secondary information collected through documentary reviews, this research also involved collecting of primary data. The collection of primary data was conducted in the commercial city of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania through interviews using questionnaires. The interview covered fifty women, half unemployed and half who were working but being paid very low salary. Generally, the findings of the study show that; there is relationship between unemployment, earning very low income among women living in urban areas like Dar-es-Salaam and high rate of spread of HIV/AIDS. The study has shown that; unemployment and earning of very low income causes women living in urban areas like Dar es Salaam to engage in risky sexual relationships which leads to high spread of HIV/AIDS among these women. Through this study it has been found out that; the high rate of spread of HIV/AIDS among these women can be lowered by giving these women the opportunity to employ in the higher earning jobs and low interest loans for doing economic business. Basing on the study among other measures it is recommended that; the Government should introduce/implement policies which favour and enable more women to attain more higher education so that they can later be employed in reasonably higher paying jobs. Also, the Government should guarantee women loans in the commercial banks to enable these banks to offer more low interest loans to women in order to empower them economically so as to minimize the possibilities of women to engage in risky sexual relationships for survival/economical reasons, hence lowering the spread of HIV/AIDS.;이 논문의 목적은 여성의 실업과 안정적 수입의 결여가 탄자니아의 수도 Dar-es Salaam 같은 개발도상국의 도시에 사는 여성의 HIV/AIDS 감염에 주요한 영향을 미치는 지를 조사하는 것이다. 문헌조사를 통해서 나타난 바에 의하면, 개도국의 도시지역에 거주하는 여성의 실업과 HIV/AIDS 의 높은 감염 비율과의 상관관계에 대한 연구가 거의 없다. 이 논문은 HIV/AIDS 가 빈곤으로 인해 남성보다 여성이 더 영향을 받아 감염되는 젠더 질병이라는 점을 보여준다. 기존의 2 차 자료 이외에 이 연구는 1 차 자료를 수집하고 분석하였다. 1 차 자료 수집은 탄자니아의 Dar es Salaam 시에서 설문지를 배분하여 이뤄졌다. 인터뷰에는 50 명의 여성이 참여하였는데 그 중 반은 직업이 없었고 나머지 반은 취업은 하고 있었지만 아주 낮은 임금을 받고 있었다. 연구의 결과에 따르면, Dar-es- Salaam 지역에 사는 여성의 실업과 낮은 수입은 HIV/AIDS 의 높은 확산 비율과 관련이 있다. 실업과 낮은 수입이 Dar es Salaam 같은 도시지역에 사는 여성으로 하여금 위험한 성관계를 갖도록 하며 그 결과 이들 여성 사이에서 HIV/AIDS 이 급격하게 확산된다는 점이다. 이 연구를 통해서 나타난 사실은, 이 여성들에게 더 높은 수입을 가져다 주는 취업의 기회를 제공하거나 그들이 비즈니스를 할 수 있도록 저금리의 대출을 제공해줌으로써 HIV/AIDS 의 높은 확산 비율을 막을 수 있다는 점이다. 정부는 더 많은 여성들이 높은 교육을 받고 이를 바탕으로 더 높은 임금의 직업을 가질 수 있는 정책을 실시해야 한다. 또한 정부는 상업은행에서 여성 대상 저금리 대출을 실시하도록 하여 여성들이 경제적 역량을 강화하도록 해야 한다. 그 결과 경제적인 원인으로 인하여 위험한 성관계를 갖게 될 가능성을 낮추고 HIV/AIDS 의 확산을 줄이도록 해야 한다.
