Sons and lovers를 통해 본 "flame of life and warmth"의 의미

Abstract

D. H. Lawrence는 1885년 9월 1일 영국 Nottingham주에 있는 East Wood 마을에서 현세적이고 육욕적인 성격의 부친과 지적이며 매사에 독선적인 모친의 넷째아들로 태어났다. 부모의 이러한 이질적인 요소는 아들 Lawrence의 성장과정에 지대한 영향을 미쳤으니, 부친의 관능적인 요소와 모친의 정신적인 요소가 바로 그것이다. 특히 이것은 Lawrence자신의 성격상의 분열을 초래하여 그의 인간관계에 큰 영향을 끼치게 된다. Lawrence는 고뇌로 점철된 자신의 젊은 시절의 이야기를 소설을 통해서 들려주고 있으며 Sons and Lovers의 Paul Morel이 바로 Lawrence자신이기도 한 것이다. 또한 Sons and Lovers가 소설로서 성공한 점은 여러 형태의 인간관계에서 vital truth를 추구한 점인데 이것은 Lawrence가 일생동안 고민한 문제이기도 하다. Sons and Lovers에서는 일련의 삽화적인 사건을 중심으로 여러형태의 인간관계가 전개된다. 그중 Walter Morel과 Gertrude Morel의 관계, Paul과 그의 어머니와의 관계, Paul과 Miriam의 관계, Paul과 Clara의 관계가 특징적이다. Paul Morel은 여러 사람과 인간관계를 맺지만 어떤 관계에서도 만족한 관계를 이룰 수 없다. 즉 어머니의 과도한 사랑이나 Miriam과의 정신적인 교제, Clara Dawes와의 육체적인 접촉 그 어느 상태에서도 행복한 감정을 느낄 수 없는 것이다. Lawrence는 이러한 인간관계를 통해서 이성간의 건전한 관계가 무엇을 뜻하며 무엇을 바탕으로 ‘blood'와 ’brain' 의 타당한 관계가 유지되는가를 묻고 있다. 또한 이러한 인간관계에서 비롯되는 생명력이 있는 삶의 신비가 무엇을 의미하는지를 제시하고 있다. 특히 Lawrence는 창작 과정에서 도입했던 ‘Vital truth' 를 남자의 완전한 양성관계에서 찾는다. 이 완전한 양성관계란 곧 남여의 ‘피의 접촉’에서 이루어지며 그렇게 되기 위해서는 인간이 좀더 원시적이 되어 단순하고 자연적인 삶을 추구할 때 비로소 가능하다는 것이다. 그는 상업주의의 소산인 기계문명이 자연을 파괴하고 창조적인 삶마저 파괴한다고 믿었으며 인간의 지적인 의식과 사고 역시 기계문명과 마찬가지로 인간을 예속시켜 자연스러운 삶을 파괴하는 존재로 보았다. 즉 인간은 남여의 ‘피의 접촉’ 이나 ‘ 무의식의 세계’ 를 통해서 비로소 자유로와 질 수 있고 자연의 상태, 진실한 상태에 도달할 수 있다고 믿었던 것이다. ;On September 11, 1885 David Herbert Lawrence was born, sons of a miner, the fourth of five children at East wood, England. His father was animalistic, Living for the moment, while his mother was intelligent and self-righteous. Lawrence's duality that comes from his parent's personalities had an immense influence on the process of his life. Such duality as both sensual and spiritual heritage made it difficult for him to have ordinary human relationship with others. Sons and Lovers is just the history of his young life. Therefore Paul Morel, the central character in Sons and Lovers is undoubtedly a portrait of Lawrence. Especially the fact that he was passionately seeking vital truths about human relationships could make a success of Sons and Lovers. His life was devoted to a search for vital truths from various forms human relationships and his whole works were focused on an elaborate projection of the quest. In Sons and Lovers each episode greatly contributes to the tension, the intensity of the relationships : Walter and Gertrude Morel; Paul and Miriam; Paul and Clara; Paul and his mother. However, he [Lawrence] is always feeling unhappy about those human relationships that he has had with the people surrounding him. In each of these relationships Lawrence suggests the naked elemental truth of the right relationship between man and woman, between man and man in the ultimate sincerity of friendship, and the proper relation between blood and brain, and the secret of vital living. He believes that real human relationship is based on perfect relationship between man and woman. According to Lawrence perfect relationship between man and woman means 'blood-contact' that comes from the simple, natural life. He also believes that people should do natural life. He also believes that people should do their best endeavours to be more primitive. He thinks that civilization in a complex modern society destroys naturalness and creativeness of life rather than it has a healthy effect on them and that the quest of salvation in reason and idea only results in salvation in reason and idea only results in enslaving a man to them. Therefore, entirely in the blood, the unconscious, could man be free natural forever.
