Abstract

It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife. Pride and Prejudice의 서두에서 이미 제시한바와 같이 이 作品의 일관된 주제는 結婚이다. 재산있는 독신 남자가 아내를 필요로하고 있다는 것은, 독신 여성이 재산있는 男性을 필요로 하고 있다는 역설도 되는 것이며 이러한 주제하에서 Pride and Prejudice에서는 네 쌍의 結合이 성립된다. 그 중 Elizabeth를 통해서는 Jane Austen의 낭만적인 結婚觀을, Charlotte Lucas를 통해서는 Austen의 Practical한 結婚觀을 파악할 수 있으며 이 두사람이외의 結合을 통하여 Jane Austen의 결혼관을 여러 각도에서 관찰 할 수 있다. Jane Austen은 作中등장 人物의 性格및 行動創造에 있어서 自身의 냉철한 관찰력과 공평한 sincerity를 완벽히 발휘하고 있다. 이러한 作家의 세심한 관찰력을 통하여 묘사되어 지는 人物들의 性格分析, 그리고 이들이 처하게 되는 모든 상황에 대해 사회적 윤리성을 삽입하고 있는 作家 自身의 見解를 考察함으로써 作家의 結婚觀과 그 결혼에 이르는 類型을 규명하고자 하는 것이 본 논문의 目的이다. 그리고 이러한 目的에 到達하기 위한 단계로서 作品에 대한 一般的인 性向을 論하고자 한다. Yasmine Gooneratine은 ‘Jane Austen was no romantic in her attitude to marriage'라고 서술했다. Austen은 매년 친척 조카들에게서 가족이 불어나는 그런 상황속에서 生을 보냈다. 끊임없고 염증나는 가족간의 소소한 일들, 그리고 出生時의 고통이나 위험에 대한 완전한 이해를 간접경험에서 얻은 그녀는 흔히 結婚을 체험하지 않았기 때문에 빠지기 쉬운 감상의 오류를 범하지 않고 결혼을 객관적으로 묘사할 수 있었다. romantic이란 個性과 자유를 基本精神으로 하는 것으로 理性의 억제나 구속이 아니라 情意의 해방에서 해방에서 출발한 것이다. 外的 權威를 인정하지 않고 內的 영혼의 소리를 존중하는 것이며 romanticism이 目的하는 바는 무엇인가 무한한 것에 대한 情意의 동경, 또는 무한한 個性에 대한 追求, 즉 꿈이나 理想이다. 그러면서도 他意에 의해서가 아니라 自意에 의해서 自身의 삶을 결정해 나가는 낙관적인 자세를 취하는 것으로 성명될 때 Henry Austern은 Jane Austen을 불러 ‘religious and devout'한 作家라고 평하며 그녀를 단순한 romantist라고 생각하지는 않았다. 그러나 몇가지 理性的 전제를 제외한 本質面에 있어서 Jane Austen은 romantic한 要素를 多分히 지닌 作家라고 하겠다. 本 論文에서는 이러한 多元的 見解에 대한 차이점을 분석 비교하고 아울러 作品의 性向을 결혼관이라는 命題로 집약시켜 作家가 제시하는 理想的 結合 類型을 밝혀 보고자 한다.;It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife. As it was indicated in an introduction of her work, Pride and Prejudice, the consistant theme of Jane Ajsten is marriage. The hypothesis of this paper is if a wealthy single man needs a wife, it therefore fillows that a single woman needs a wealthy man. From this point of view, Austen made marriages of four couples possible in Pride and Prejudice. We could study her romantic view of marriage through Charlotte and some other aspects of marriage through the marriage through the marriages through the two other couples. Also she fully displayed her sharp and impartial observation of human behavior through the personalities of the characters she created in this work. It is the invention of this research to examine the ideal view of marriage by studying the social ethics she put into her work and analyzing the personalities of her characters in the process of circumstancial discovery through her detailed observation. To reach this objective, this paper will analyze the general trend of her work. Yasmine Gooneratine commented 'Jane Austen was no romantic in her attitude to marriage'. Her life spent in a yearly increasing family of nephews and nieces in continual and irksome familarity with domesticity and perfectly understanding the dangers and difficulties of childbirth, permitted her to be objective about marriage and kept her from lapsing into sentimental imaginings. Romantic is not confining or binding but based on personality and freedom and originality in the emancipation from social mores. It does not recognize the exterior of the individuals but respects the inner spirit. The mai pursuit of romanricism is a yearning of social mores, for something infinite personality. That is, the dream or ideal and then take on an optimistic view of life. But not as a romantic writer. But essencially excert for a few premisesm, she is fully romantic. This paper will study Austen's own ideal types of marriage through Pride and Prejudice in which her primary was a view of marriage.
